That interior is so Knight Rider, they could have just named it the Corvette KITT. I swear I saw a turbo boost button in that row.

Impressive engineering, relatively low list price and striking looks aside the 2020 Corvette C8 really is one of the most significant things to happen in cars in a long time. If you disagree, I’m going to change your mind.

I know, I can’t believe we’re not done thinking about the new Vette either, but frankly that’s part of the reason this thesis is worth discussing before we return to our regularly scheduled programming and talking about literally anything else going on in the automotive industry.

The greatest triumph of the C8 is that it represents a major departure from tradition for a mainstream automaker, while simultaneously staying true to the longstanding Corvette ethos of democratizing elite-level speed and handling and distributing it to the masses.

For clarity–Corvettes have never been “cheap” off a dealer lot. But they have historically offered up huge doses of performance for your dollars. And taking the platform mid-engine, while keeping that engine enormous and the whole package somewhat affordable, elevates the concept to a new level.

Until this week, a big-displacement mid-mounted engine was pretty much exclusively Lamborghini territory. Soon, you’re going to be able to get that at a dang Chevy dealership.

As far as historical gravity and just general gobsmacking, the C8 launch pretty much kicked everything else we’ve been excited about over the last few years into the trash. OK, that’s a little hyperbolic, but think about it:

This C8 body has the Ferrari 430 portion. With its mid-engine layout, I am sure the handling part will be a big step forward.

The EcoBoost Mustang starts at $26K in the US and R721K here... A $60K Vette is going to cost one and a half with hefty change.

I will watch it when I get home later today. To me, the 458 have a lower bonnet proportion than the 430/C8. But yes, I need to look at them in detail first.
 
Get Over It: The C8 Corvette Is Not Getting a Manual Gearbox

Look at that guy in the stock photo, driving the new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette. He is feeling the thrill of 495 horsepower right behind his back. He is basking in the sun as it shines on his face. What he is not doing—what he will never do, unfortunately—is shifting gears with a stick and a clutch pedal.

Thanks to Motor Authority, we now have confirmation that the new mid-engine Corvette’s sole gearbox choice will be its eight-speed dual-clutch unit, and not a traditional manual gearbox. This likely comes as a blow to the Corvette faithful, who have pretty much always had their choice of a stick or an automatic.

But it isn’t that much of a surprise. Since we got a hold of a leaked order guide several months ago, it’s been readily apparent that a true manual wasn’t in the cards for the new C8. It’s basically been DCT or nothing since the get-go.

But please, let Corvette engineering boss Tadge Juechter lay it out in stark terms:

When I asked Corvette lead engineer Tadge Juechter at the reveal of the 2020 Corvette on Thursday if there is any chance the manual will come back, he replied simply: “No.”

Juechter said a manual-equipped Corvette wouldn’t sell well enough to make it worth a supplier’s effort to develop.

“We couldn’t find anybody honestly who’d be willing to do it. Because just like the automatic, the DCT, it would have to be a bespoke manual,” Juechter said. “It’s low volume, very expensive. The reason is it’s a low-volume industry. That industry is dying—building manual transmissions.”

The 2020 C8 Corvette Is Almost Sold Out

The C8 Corvette: You love reading about it, we are okay with writing about it. But if you want to own it, to feel all 495 horsepower humming behind the driver’s seat, you’d better hustle down to your local Chevrolet dealership and get your order in as the long-fabled mid-engine Corvette is almost sold out, at least for the first model year anyway.

Michael Simcoe, General Motor’s design chief, told Autoblog at the Concours d’Elegance of America (an event held in Plymouth, MI, not to be confused with the Concours d’Elegance in Monterrey, CA) over the weekend that new ‘Vette orders are either already at capacity or nearly there.

“It’s nearly sold out. It’s so close that it’s bound to be sold out soon,” Simcoe told Autoblog.
