2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8

I Helped Reassemble A Stripped-Down 2020 Chevy Corvette C8. What I Saw Was Beautiful

If you want to see the 2020 Chevy Corvette C8 up close — like really, really close— then today is your day. A few weekends ago, I had a chance to help reassemble a C8 that had been torn into hundreds of pieces; the images and video I snagged of the car’s hardware nearly made me faint. Yes, it’s that beautiful.

When it comes to car tech geekery, cutaways and CAD images are what dreams are made of. But nothing compares to actually having a full car at your disposal, ready to be tinkered with and admired from every angle. When that car is something as exciting as a Corvette C8, you may need to grab a paper bag to control your breathing; I know I sure did.

The car belongs to Darko Stojanovski, the owner of Pacific Motors, an exotic car salvage operation based in Detroit. Working in a retired steelworks a few weekends ago, Darko and his friends began reassembling a 2020 Chevy Corvette C8 that some enterprising gentlemen had apparently hoped to use as the basis for some kind of custom supercar.

Darko told me that by the time those ambitious men realized that building a bespoke machine on the C8's platform would be more trouble than it was worth, they’d already torn the ’Vette into a few hundred pieces. So the defeated men called up Darko, who decided to buy the enormous Lego project and complete it with some buddies, all of whom were undoubtedly intrigued by the prospect of seeing a vehicle this new in such a state of chaos. Luckily, I was invited to join in the fun.

The C8 Corvette's Software Watchdog Will Force You To Obey The Engine Break-In Limits

When you take delivery of a new car like the 2021 Chevrolet Corvette, the temptation to put the pedal to the floor straight off the dealership lot is mighty powerful. But that can be disastrous for a factory-fresh engine.

No worries if that new car is a C8-generation Corvette — GM has a slick way to make sure you obey the engine break-in procedure.

The C8 comes with a V8 developing a healthy 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, but you can’t use all of that at first. As the Detroit Free Press reports, for the first 500 miles you’re limited to 330 lb-ft in first and second gears. The rev limit is also reduced to 4,000 rpm.

In earlier times, a buyer would read the owner’s manual and understand the need to take it easy for a certain number of miles. It was very important back then to let all the moving parts get familiar with one another before pushing for peak power.

Mike Kociba, assistant chief engineer of GM’s small-block engines, agrees. From the Free Press.

The C8 Corvette May Lose Its Weirdest Interior Quirk

Conceptually, the C8 Corvette is pretty hard to fault. It’s an American midengine sports car — a rarity in itself — that costs less than midengine sports cars tend to and has been found to be generally enjoyable to drive by everyone who has driven one. Visually, though, it’s polarizing.

One of the C8's most unusual design quirks is its strip of buttons cascading from the dashboard’s infotainment display all the way down to the center console. I haven’t sat in a C8 yet, but the decision to organize the climate controls in this way always struck me as odd and not particularly user friendly.

Apparently I’m not the only one who feels this way, as it may disappear in time for the car’s midcycle refresh in two years’ time. The report was published in the April issue of MotorTrend, and shared by a member on MidEngineCorvetteForum.com:

The C8 Corvette’s somewhat fussy styling was already locked and loaded when Michael Simcoe took over at GM Design Chief.

But sources in Detroit say the mid-cycle re-design Simcoe had originally planned for 2025 has been put on the back burner as GM pours money in its electrical vehicle program. However, inside say an interior redesign aimed at among other things fixing the array of button and switches cascading down the buttress on the right side of the center console has survived the bean counters. The redesigned interior will reportedly appear on 2023 C8s.

Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray to launch in UK in October

Mid-engined V8-powered supercar priced from £81,700 in highly specified Launch Edition trim

The new Chevrolet C8 Corvette Stingray will go on sale in the UK in October in both coupé and convertible guide, with prices starting from £81,000. It will be the first Corvette in the model's 67-year history to officially be sold in right-hand-drive form.

The C8 will first reach the UK in Launch Edition form with 16 different options split equally between the coupé and convertible versions. Prices will start from £81,700 and £87,110 respectively. All models sold here will be specified with the Z51 performance package and highly specified 2LT trim as standard.

That means all European cars will gain a number of hardware upgrades over the base-spec US car, including manually adjustable suspension, larger brake discs, an electronic limited-slip differential, a shorter axle ratio, a performance exhaust system, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres and an aerodynamically enhancing bodykit.

Additional standard equipment fitted includes a head-up display, data recorder, sat-nav, 14-speaker Bose sound system, rear camera 'mirror' and heated, ventilated seats.

The Launch Edition cars will also feature the higher 3LT trim, and will include additional carbon styling elements on the spoiler, mirror, wheels and roof, along with upgraded seats. They will also benefit from a magnetic ride control system and bespoke design details that set them apart from the standard models. A front suspension list, which raises the clearance of the car by 50mm, will be offered as an option.

Corvette finally does the ‘right’ thing – in Japan

A Corvette with the ‘wheel on the right side

The Chevrolet Corvette has often taunted global performance car followers.

With its dramatic design, huge V8 engine, relatively affordable price and commitment to rear-wheel drive, the Corvette has always been a potentially great alternative to more snobbish European sportscars.

The only problem is its proudly American steering wheel configuration – which is on the left. With the C8 Corvette, much has changed.

With an engine that has moved from in front, to behind the cabin and a dual-clutch transmission, there is no questioning Chevrolet’s intent with this latest Corvette: Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren customers looking for something cheaper.

Best of all is the presence of a right-hand-drive option. The move to a mid-engine layout has enabled Chevrolet greater assembly adaptability with the C8 Corvette, and righthand drive markets are scheduled to benefit.

Although the C8 Corvette has been shown with its righthand drive cabin in renderings and studio images, the first public outing has now happened. And it wasn’t in the United Kingdom or Australia – two of the world’s most established markets for expensive righthand drive performance cars.

Chevrolet chose to show debut its righthand drive C8 Corvette in Japan. The 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine might only have 16-valves, which are pushrod operated, but it does make a terrifically linear 365 kW.

First ever right-hand drive Corvette breaks cover at Goodwood, mid-engined V8 supercar priced from £81,700

The Chevrolet C8 Corvette Stingray has made its official UK debut in right-hand drive form, ahead of the American supercar going on sale in the UK later this year.

The mid-engined model, which will be the first Corvette in the model's 67-year history to officially be sold in right-hand-drive form, made its first public appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

It will be sold in coupé and convertible guises, via long-term UK Corvette importers Ian Allan Motors, with prices starting from £81,700 and £87,110 respectively.

The C8 will first reach the UK in Launch Edition trim with 16 different options split equally between the coupé and convertible versions. All models sold here will be equipped with the Z51 performance package and highly specified 2LT trim as standard.

Two Dead After C8 Corvette Carrying Three People Crashes Into Pool At 150 MPH

The vehicle was carrying three as it plunged into a pool.

On Wednesday, a Chevrolet Corvette convertible crashed through the backyard of a home and into a pool. The crash killed two of the vehicle’s occupants while a third is critically injured.

NBC Los Angeles reports that the crash happened at around 2:18 in the morning in Chino, California. The vehicle, a C8 Corvette convertible, struck a center median at the intersection of Schaefer Avenue and East End Avenue, took flight and flew over a hedge before it crashed into the pool. The car’s three occupants were all ejected.

An investigation is underway and while the exact cause is unknown, officials are saying that speed is definitely a factor. The vehicle appears to have failed to make a turn while traveling fast enough to cause it to go airborne.

Unfortunately, two of the occupants died as a result of the crash while the third remains in serious condition, but recovering at a local hospital. Video of the scene shows the car missing much of its front end and car parts are strewn all over the area:
