The M-Sport Ford World Rally Team (WRT) gave motorsport fans their first look at the exciting competition livery that will help the new M Sport Ford Puma Hybrid Rally1 car electrify the 2022 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC).

The M Sport Ford Puma Hybrid Rally1 makes its competitive debut at the 2022 Monte Carlo Rally. Three cars will be campaigned throughout the 2022 WRC season by drivers Craig Breen, Adrien Fourmaux and Gus Greensmith. In addition, nine-time FIA World Rally Champion, Sébastien Loeb, will join the M Sport Ford World Rally Team to compete at Monte Carlo Rally, an event he has won seven times previously.

The 2022 WRC season marks the 25th anniversary of a hugely successful partnership between Ford and M-Sport that has delivered seven championships and more than 1,500 stage wins in iconic rally cars including the M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC and the Ford Focus RS WRC. Since the partnership began, M-Sport and Ford have delivered a record-breaking 268 consecutive manufacturer points scoring results.

The 2022 World Rally Championship kicks off next week, and Ford has unveiled its wild contender

We’ve already seen the contender that Hyundai is fielding in the World Rally Championship this year, and now it’s Ford’s turn to reveal its entry for the new, eco-friendly (ish) era of rallying.

This, people of the internet, is the Ford Puma Hybrid Rally1; named as such because the WRC is operating under a completely new book of regulations for 2022.

As before power comes from a 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine, but now that’s been married to a 100kW electric motor for boosts of up to three seconds at a time, many, many times over, per stage.

With engine and motor working together you’re looking at more than 493bhp and in excess of 369lb ft of torque, and a 0-62mph figure in the region of 3.2 seconds. That’s on either tarmac or gravel, by the way.

The hybrid tech also gives the WRC the chance to project a cleaner, greener image, with the ability for cars to travel between stages under electric power alone. For a bit anyway, 3.6kWh only gets you so far.

What else is new? There’s been a lot of focus on simplification in order to reduce costs, so the aero, suspension and transmissions have all been made less complex.

Add the hybrid system’s 95kg of bulk into the mix and this year’s cars should be a tad slower than before. Not that mere mortals like us will be any less terrified by the on-board footage of night stages taken at full tilt.

New Ford Puma revealed - yes, it's an SUV - Auto Express

Is it my imagination or does it somewhat resemble the Jaguar E-Pace? At least that front look?

Does it come with a fire extinguisher?
Does it rust?
Will it fall apart as I drive?

Had a Fiesta Ecosport. Honestly no nice words. It was low on fuel, but fell apart....often. and it rusted. My exhaust rusted so quick

The F100 classic bakkie, now that was a Ford. The latest ones, I am not sure of.
 
Ford Puma to gain all-electric version from 2024

The Puma EV will still be underpinned by the architecture used by the Ford Fiesta

An all-electric Ford Puma will launch in 2024, the US firm has revealed.

Although Ford has access to Volkswagen’s MEB platform as part of alliance with Volkswagen Group, the Puma EV will still be underpinned by the architecture used by the Ford Fiesta.

The Puma was Ford’s best-selling car in the UK last year. It dethroned the Fiesta which suffered a drop in sales having been heavily impacted by semiconductor shortages and factory closures.

The impacts were so severe that the supermini dropped out of the UK’s top ten best-sellers list altogether for the first time in 12 years.

The Puma’s success continued in Europe, where 134.431 cars were registered.

The model’s switch to electric is the latest step in Ford’s electrification strategy, which will involve an investment of $22 billion through 2025.

The firm has already electrified several of its most important models, including the Mustang, F-150 and Transit.

Ford is also targeting global carbon neutrality by 2050 in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. Part of its strategy is close collaboration with other car manufacturers, including investing $500 million into EV start-up Rivian.

Ford: two new electric crossovers and a new Puma EV by 2024

Ford announces its electrification plans, including spinning off two new cars from VW's ID range

Ford has fleshed out its plans for an electric future in Europe. They involve a full-battery Puma in 2024, and a couple more EV crossovers in 2023 and 2024 to fit between the Puma and Mustang Mach-E.

Those two middle cars will be based off the VW MEB electric platform. Ford is categorising them as a 'medium-size crossover' and a 'sport crossover'. Think VW ID.4 and ID.5 then.

But they won't be VW clones. Ford of Europe boss Stuart Rowley says they'll be "highly differentiated and the sort of car only Ford can do… they'll look like Fords, drive like Fords and have a unique ownership experience" with Ford software. Given some of the software issues in the VW cars, that's probably a good thing.

The Puma is already Ford's best-seller in Europe, so an electric version is likely to tumble out of the door. Rowley says that nine out of 10 Mustang Mach-E buyers in Europe are new to Ford, so this EV commitment should help reposition Ford.

Also coming to the lineup are electric Transits. There'll be three sizes of electric vans and the smaller two will field Tourneo people-carrier versions. The two-tonne electric Transit is already in launch phase. The smallest of the them, the Courier and Tourneo Courier, will be a new generation. It's based off the same platform as the Puma.

Ford says by 2030 all the cars it sells in Europe will be electric. For vans, it's 2035. The manufacturing is claimed to be going CO2 neutral in Europe by 2035, including from suppliers and logistics. "It's what consumers and society expect of us," says Rowley.

In 2024 Ford will start building batteries in Germany for the mid-size crossovers. Today Ford also signed an agreement to build van batteries in Turkey, making 30-45GWh of batteries a year.

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“Ford's previous form in crossovers is a bit spotty. Spoiler alert: this one's a good 'un”

The UK loves a Ford. Though the Focus and Fiesta have tumbled from the best-sellers list, it's the Puma that's now doing the heavy lifting for Ford. It's easily superior to the latest Nissan Juke and VW's lacklustre T-Cross, and brings driver appeal to a woefully uninteresting class of cars.

It's also an impressively rounded thing. The interior is cleverly versatile as well as nicely furnished. The ST is a fun car to drive, with surprising ability - and generally, you can see why the Puma has been warmly received by the buying public.

 
Ford has revealed a 1.0-litre hybrid Puma ST with an automatic gearbox

Slower, less powerful hybrid joins the 1.5-litre Fiesta-based hot mini-SUV

Ford has announced a slower, less powerful, mild-hybrid version of its really-very-good Puma ST. It is called… the Ford Puma ST Powershift.

As that name suggests, the new Fiesta-based SUV gets Ford’s seven-speed dual clutch gearbox (as opposed to the six-speed manual of the regular ST), allied to the most powerful version of the 1.0-litre three-cylinder mild-hybrid engine already available lower down the Puma range.

This beefed up little scrapper makes 168bhp and 183lb ft of torque thanks to a tweak to the car’s electronic brain, while the belt-driven starter-generator “engages energy recovery more quickly than in other applications” to enable even faster recharging of that 48V battery.

Naturally, it’s slower than the 197bhp three-pot Puma ST: 0-62mph in this downsized version takes 7.4s versus the 1.5’s 6.7s, though this car of course claims greater economy and fewer CO2s. Ford reckons on around 37mpg and 144g/km of CO2 for the baby ST, versus around 34 and up to 155g/km for the… other baby ST.

Coupled with the compact SUV's comfort, uncompromised interior space and innovative practical solutions including the Ford MegaBox, the versatile new Ford Puma ST Powershift brings Ford Performance driving experiences within reach for even greater numbers of enthusiasts - delivering responsive 7.4-second 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration alongside 44.8 mpg (6.3 l/100 km) fuel efficiency and 144 g/km CO2.
