Thread created for Mazda's new compact SUV, that slots in above the CX-3, is to be shown at the Geneva Motor Show. Thread title will be updated once details are announced./

Mazda drops teaser of new compact SUV … but what is it?

Mazda has released a fresh teaser image of what it describes as a “new compact SUV” set to make its debut at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show in early March.

At first, you might be inclined to think it’s a new CX-3, but it’s worth noting an updated version was revealed as recently as a year ago (with the original having arrived in 2015).

Another – more plausible – theory is that the new model is in fact a global CX-4 (a badge already used in the Chinese market), which logically would slot neatly between the aforementioned CX-3 and the latest CX-5. If it is indeed a CX-4, expect a sleek, almost-coupé-like roofline to dominate the styling.

Whatever it turns out to be, Mazda says the new model will like the latest Mazda3 boast “a more mature Kodo design language” and run on the firm’s new-generation Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture.

The powertrain line-up will include the latest Skyactiv engines, including the new Skyactiv-X powerplant, which is the world’s first commercial petrol mill to use compression ignition.

Mazda to reveal new SUV at Geneva show

New machine, set to rival the Nissan Qashqai, will share design traits and powertrains with recently launched Mazda 3

Mazda will launch a new compact SUV, which will slot in above the CX-3 in its range, at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The Japanese firm has released a single darkened teaser image of the new car’s rear, showing a relatively compact and sculpted design and round brake lights, in keeping with the latest version of Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design language.

Mazda says the new machine will be a “brand-new” addition to its range, and forms the second model in its new-generation line-up, following the recently launched Mazda 3.

The firm already offers the Nissan Juke-rivalling CX-3 compact crossover – which shares underpinnings with the Mazda 2 – and the larger CX-5, and it is likely the new model will be a small family SUV that slots in between the two, taking on the likes of the Nissan Qashqai.

That could lead to the new model being labelled the CX-4, a nameplate currently used for a Chinese market-only coupe-SUV.

Mazda says the SUV will be built on its recently developed Skyactiv Vehicle Architecture, and that the powertrain line-up will include its latest Skyactiv-X compression ignition engine – both elements that it will share with the Mazda 3. That suggests the SUV could be a similar size and share a substantial number of its underpinnings.

Mazda CX-30 compact crossover makes debut at Geneva

New SUV will be a 'core model' in Mazda's range and is due on sale in the UK this year

Mazda has revealed the new CX-30 SUV, which sits between the CX-3 and CX-5, at the Geneva motor show.

The Nissan Qashqai rival is based on the recently launched Mazda 3 hatch and is described as a new "core model" in the Japanese firm’s line-up. It will go on sale in the UK later this year powered by a range of petrol hybrid and diesel engines.

The compact crossover features Mazda’s distinctive Kodo design language and will also use the firm’s latest-generation engines, including the Skyactiv-X compression ignition powertrain. The firm says the CX-30 will be a global model that will be "made at key global plants".

All of the petrol engines offered in the machine will be mild-hybrid units, featuring a motor driven by a 24V battery. The CX-30 will also be offered with Mazda's Skyactiv-D diesel engine. The exact powertrain line-up for the UK has yet to be confirmed. All models will feature all-wheel drive balanced by a central torque distribution system and six-speed petrol and automatic gearboxes will be available.

Mazda says the SUV has been styled to reflect the "flowing beauty of a coupé and the bold toughness of an SUV". It features a bold, large, triangular grille similar to that seen on the 3, along with the traditional high-riding SUV stance, black body trim and a relatively sleek rear end. There are also optional LED front lights and progressive indicators.

Built on the same Skyactiv platform as the 3, the CX-30 has been honed to offer dynamic handling, Mazda claims, despite the high-riding SUV form.

The CX-30 is 4395mm long, 1795mm wide and 1540mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2655mm, making it virtually identical in size to class rivals such as the Qashqai and Seat Ateca. It features a 430-litre boot, which matches the Qashqai. An electrically operated tailgate will be an option.

The interior has a driver-focused cockpit with a two-part 'wing' design and an 8.8in central infotainment screen angled towards the driver's seat. The system features what Mazda calls a "new, intuitive guidance system" and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The driver display mixes analogue and digital displays.

New ‘global’ Mazda CX-30 revealed (to slot in above CX-3)

The new Mazda CX-30 has been unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show, billed as a fresh “core” global model slotting in between the CX-3 and CX-5.

The Japanese automaker says its new compact crossover will “comfortably” seat four adults (although it’s officially classed as a five-seater) and was designed to be “easy to drive”.

The new CX-30 measures 4 395 mm in length, which makes it 120 mm longer than the CX-3 and 150 mm shorter than the CX-5. With a wheelbase of 2 655 mm, the newcomer boasts an extra 85 mm between its axles compared with the CX-3, while its ground clearance comes in at 175 mm (15 mm more than its smaller sibling). The luggage compartment, meanwhile, will swallow a claimed 430 litres, with the liftgate opening measuring a generous 1 020 mm wide.

Power comes from Mazda’s latest SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated 2,0 petrol engine, while a SkyActiv-D 1,8 turbodiesel unit is also expected to be available. In addition, the Japanese firm will offer its clever new SkyActiv-X compression-ignition petrol mill, as used in the latest Mazda3.

Drive will be sent to either the front axle or all four corners, with transmission options set to include a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes.

Inside, the cockpit is “firmly centred” on the driver, with instruments angled slightly towards the person behind the steering wheel. Two interior colour schemes will be offered: one with dark brown accents and one with dark blue accents.

The former scheme will be available in black or pure white leather (with perforations in the black leather option revealing a brown interior liner), while the dark blue scheme will feature fabric or leatherette upholstery, offered in “greige” (that’s a mix of grey and beige) or black.

The New Mazda CX-30 Turns Mazda's Lineup Into a Russian Doll Collection of Small SUVs

Mazda already makes two small SUVs, the CX-3 and CX-5, the latter of which is about 11 inches longer and three inches wider than the former. Still, the company just introduced at the Geneva Motor Show a crossover that slots between those two, and for whatever reason, it’s called the CX-30 and not the CX-4 (perhaps because the CX-4 is already available in China?).

We always talk about how America is in love with crossovers, and while that’s true, the segment is hot pretty much all around the globe, which is why brands like Jeep offer three compact SUVs, all within about 15 inches of length of one another. Now Mazda is joining the club with its CX-30, giving the brand its own trio of small SUVs that can fit just inside one another like Russian Matryoshka dolls.

The CX-30 is the second of Mazda’s newest generation of cars, and like the first—the 2019 Mazda 3—it’s based on the company’s newest Skyactiv vehicle architecture. Like the 3, the new CX-30 will get the Skyactiv-X “Holy Grail” gas motor, as well as a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G
conventional gas engine and a 1.8-liter Skyactiv-D diesel, with a six-speed auto and a six-speed manual as the only transmission options.

The Skyactiv-X and Skyactiv-G powertrains will come with Mazda’s mild hybrid system, which Mazda introduced on the 3. In fact, looking at the specs, the CX-30 does seem a lot like a taller 3, sharing not just three of its engine options and its basic architecture (with its MacPherson struts up front and torsion beam suspension out back), but also its available “i-Activ” all-wheel drive system.

The new SUV also shares the “mature” version of Mazda’s Kodo design language that debuted at the LA Auto Show on the Mazda 3, and that’s a good thing, because—like its smaller compact car cousin—the CX-30 looks good.

I’m not sure what I think about the thick cladding around the wheel arches, but I can see some door ding-preventing value to the plastic on the doors, so I’m all for that. The rear lights are thin and sharp, the side doors have wavy but attractive skins, and the front has the same thin lights and big chrome-surrounded grille that makes the new 3 so attractive. You can read a long-winded breakdown of the car’s design on Mazda’s media site, but the main point, here, is that, as far as small crossovers go, this thing looks pretty.

In case you’re curious about dimensions, the CX-3 is 168 inches long, the CX-5 is about 179 inches, and the new CX-30 comes in at 173. As for width, the CX-3 is around 69.5-inches across, the CX-5 is about 72, and the CX-30 is around 71. So it’s pretty much right there in between.

The interior looks nice in these press pictures, sharing a number of design elements with the new Mazda 3, like the dial-style user interface for the 8.8-inch widescreen display, which sits on top of the dash. That dash appears to have multiple “layers,” one of which wraps around to the doors, and ties in with the silver door handles; it’s a nice look.

As is becoming more common in many new cars, the new crossover offers a bunch of driver safety features, too, like Front Cross Traffic Alert and Driver Monitoring system, the latter of makes sure the driver isn’t falling asleep at the wheel.

For more details, check out Mazda’s media site, but the takeaway is that, with the CX-30, it seems that Mazda took the new Mazda 3, crossover-ified it, and slotted it into the gap between the CX-3 and CX-5. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

There’s no information on release dates, or even if the CX-30 is coming to the U.S., but I don’t see why it wouldn’t.

I understand the gap this car fills, but as a self-professed Mazda fanboy, I like neither the look nor the name of this car. All that black plastic around the wheel arches/skirting is total overkill. If anything I was hoping they'd go in the other direction with that. And CX-30 is just a dumb name. Call it CX-4 and stop confusing everyone.
Will likely still sell well. Practical, gorgeous interior, will drive like a Mazda and probably still look better than other competitors in the segment. But I've come to expect a bit more from the design team.

And CX-30 is just a dumb name. Call it CX-4 and stop confusing everyone.

Even better, link the crossover to the road car variant. So CX-3 is based on 3, CX-5 is based on 5, CX-7 is based on - well, there it falls apart and they'd have to rename it CX-6 and base it on the 6. I hate these marketers and their stupid names.

BMW seem to be the only people who can get it even remotely in order.

Looks like the Hyundai whatever and the Kia whatsitsname , everything looks like everything else

The naming convention is bordering on stupid.

Non-car people will legit think it's a new CX-3 or some sort of replacement.

Having said that it's a smart looking vehicle.

Will be a top notch seller for Mazda worldwide

I just don't understand the need for all the black plastic on the outside. They went in the right direction when they shed a bunch of it on the newer CX-5. Was hoping they'd do the same thing with this car.

THIS is something that looks as though it could make sense to me.
CX-3 - too pokey for me.
CX-5 - more than I need.
CX-30 - Goldilocks zone?

I’m thinking along the same lines. And then I wonder what this has that the Mazda3 doesn’t. Especially as I’m pretty sure it’ll cost more than the 3.
