Mazda's new CX-30 compact crossover confirmed for SA
Mazda has found room for yet another compact crossover in its line-up - meet the first-ever CX-30, which is due to hit South African shores in the first quarter of 2020.
With a length of 4395mm and a width of 1795mm, it slots between the current CX-3 and CX-5 in size terms, and has a similar footprint to the Nissan Qashqai and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.
In design terms it follows the path forged by the new-generation Mazda3, and it’s also going to be offered with Mazda’s innovative Skyactiv-X petrol motor with diesel-like compression ignition, while the conventional Skyactiv petrol engines will be mated to mild hybrid technology. Permanent all-wheel drive will also be offered.
The South African drivetrain line-up has yet to be confirmed however.
As for practicality, the CX-30 offers 430 litres of boot space with all seats in place and it can be ordered with a powered tailgate.
Upfront, the cockpit incorporates a 22.3cm widescreen central infotainment system, operated via the iDrive-like ‘commander control’ that features a more intuitive guidance system. The system is also compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Available driver assistance gadgets include Front Cross Traffic Alert, Mazda’s Cruising and Traffic Support system, which can assist with accelerator, brake pedal and steering operations when stuck in traffic, and the Driver Monitoring fatigue detection system.
The South African line-up, pricing and specs will be announced nearer to launch.

I agree. Yikes. Not liking that black plastic at all.
I would have thought they'd go with something bigger than the cx-5, rather than a bit smaller but still a bit bigger than the cx-3.
I wonder what the pricing will be like if it gets here...

I think it would be popular here.
I’m in two minds. CX-9 is positioned higher up, obviously costs more. Dunno how the SA motoring public will perceive paying ~R600k onwards for just a Mazda etc
And yes I know Sunday & Kia have SUVs here in that price range but they are not exactly big sellers, not poor sellers either.

It’s official: new Mazda CX-30 confirmed for South Africa
The new Mazda CX-30 unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show has been confirmed for South Africa, with the local launch scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2020.
The CX-30 slots in neatly between the CX-3 and the CX-5, with the local arm of the Japanese automaker confirming that these two models will “remain part” of its range after the launch of the newcomer.
As a reminder, Mazda says its new compact crossover will “comfortably” seat four adults (although it’s officially classed as a five-seater) and was designed to be “easy to drive”.
It measures 4 395 mm in length, which makes it some 120 mm longer than the CX-3 and 150 mm shorter than the CX-5. With a wheelbase of 2 655 mm, the new model boasts an extra 85 mm between its axles compared with the CX-3, while its ground clearance comes in at 175 mm (15 mm more than its smaller sibling).
The luggage compartment, meanwhile, will swallow a claimed 430 litres, with the liftgate opening measuring a generous 1 020 mm wide.
While local engine specifications have yet to be announced, Mazda in Europe has confirmed power will come from the latest SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated 2,0 petrol engine, with a SkyActiv-D 1,8 turbodiesel unit also expected to be available. In addition, the Japanese firm will offer its clever new SkyActiv-X compression-ignition petrol mill, as used in the latest Mazda3.
Drive will be sent to either the front axle or all four wheels, with transmission options expected to include six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes.

Here’s why the new Mazda CX-30 isn’t called the CX-4
Since the new Mazda CX-30 unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show slots neatly between the smaller CX-3 and the larger CX-5, you may be wondering why it wasn’t simply badged as the CX-4. Well, wonder no more.
Speaking to Car and Driver, a US representative from the Japanese firm pointed out – as you might have known – that the brand already sells a vehicle wearing the CX-4 moniker in China. Apparently, the automaker was keen to avoid any confusion that could come with marketing two different vehicles under the same name, even in different markets.
However, another Mazda spokesperson hinted to Motor1.com that future members of the brand’s crossover stable could also follow a new nomenclature that kicks off with the CX-30.
“While the CX-30 slots in nicely between the CX-3 and CX-5 in most dimensions, Mazda gave it a distinctive name because it’s an all-new vehicle with features not yet available on others in the line-up and the first of the CX models to adapt the new Kodo design,” the Mazda spokesperson told the publication.
“Whether future CX models will follow that naming philosophy in their reveals, we’ll have to wait and see,” he added.
Well, whatever the reason for adopting a name that doesn’t quite fit in with the current range, we have confirmation from Mazda Southern Africa that the new CX-30 will launch locally in the first quarter of 2020.

Nothing irritates me as much as people automatically drawing imaginary similarities to something else every time a new model is released, it is almost like people are just lazy to process the newcomer and appreciate it's beauty, no it must look like something. I have a friend who forced the guys at Toyota to admit that the new Corolla hatch is a copy of a Mazda, he could not even tell which Mazda it is, the sales guy was just corteous enough to 'admit' it after being badgered by the guy.

New Mazda CX-30 unlikely to get 2,5-litre turbo-four
The new Mazda CX-30 unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show earlier in March 2019 is unlikely to be offered with the Japanese brand’s turbocharged 2,5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, according to a senior executive.
Speaking to motoring.com.au through an interpreter, powertrain development chief Ichiro Hirose said the firm had “no special plans” to use the turbocharged engine (offered in some markets in the Mazda6 and CX-5) to power the latest addition to the stable.
Of course, Mazda has confirmed the powertrain line-up in Europe will include the latest SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated 2,0 petrol engine, with a SkyActiv-D 1,8 turbodiesel unit also expected to be available. In addition, the Japanese firm will offer its clever new SkyActiv-X compression-ignition petrol mill, as used in the latest Mazda3.
While the CX-30 is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2020, the local engine range has yet to be confirmed.
Hirose, though, suggested the automakers naturally aspirated 2,5-litre petrol engine would also be offered in some markets.
“The planned powertrain line-up is 2,5-litre – that’s naturally aspirated 2,5-litre – 2,0-litre petrol, also the 1,8-litre diesel with the turbo and also 2,0-litre SkyActiv-X. We will then, according to region and market needs, use this [line-up] as an introduction to CX-30. Currently we haven’t included the 2,5 turbo,” he told the Australian publication.
“Probably alluding to the MPS – the performance series – are we keeping the 2,5-litre turbo for that? Currently, we have no special plans for any of that at the moment, but having said that, it is always a balance between the product itself and what the market demand is going to be.
“So, we’re not completely ruling it out. It’s not going to be the same powertrain line-up indefinitely, but currently we don’t have any plans for a 2,5 turbo,” he said.

Mazda has filed an application in Europe to trademark the “MX-30” badge, leaving the industry wondering what sort of new vehicle the Japanese firm could have up its sleeve.
The studious folks over at AutoGuide.com unearthed the application, which Mazda recently filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office.
The emergence of this new moniker comes after the Fuchū-based firm revealed its new CX-30 crossover – which is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2020 – at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2019.
