2020 Mazda CX-30

Mazda CX-30 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

With the CX-30, Mazda has launched a genuinely impressive alternative to the likes of the more humdrum crossovers that seem to be so very popular in this day and age. It might not be perfect, but if it was between this and a Nissan Qashqai… Well, I know which of the two I’d go for.

It’s easily one of the most entertaining cars to drive in its class. Even when driven at a moderate pace it has a sense of integrity about its controls and the way it moves that helps elevate it above the current crop of largely mundane, tedious family crossovers. And for that alone, it deserves a nod of approval.

Mazda CX-30 - GOING ON 30 - OSV

Mazda's third compact SUV is this car, the CX-30. It borrows its engineering from the Mazda3 hatch, but clothes it with the trendier SUV body styling that family buyers now increasingly want.

Consider it carefully if you're not fussed about having a premium badge, like the idea of eye-catching looks and cutting-edge engineering and find yourself interested in trendy segment contenders like Toyota's C-HR and Ford's Puma.

The 2020 Mazda CX-30 Feels Like A Lower-Budget Porsche Macan

Early Verdict

It’s unlikely that you’ll find a bigger CUV skeptic than me, and it’s very rare that a compact ute does anything to impress me. As I walked away from Mazda’s new CX-30 I felt like there was finally a little hatch on stilts that delivered a good combination of ride compliance and sporty handling.

Compared to anything else in this segment at a reasonable price point the CX-30 brings the horsepower you really want and injects a bit of that typical Mazda DNA into the handling. It’s rare to find a CUV with driving dynamics that encourage you to push it on winding roads. You’d be hard pressed to find a more engaging crossover this side of Porsche’s pretty-damn-good Macan.

Don’t get me wrong, the CX-30 isn’t a Macan competitor. It isn’t as powerful as a Macan, nor does it have the material quality of the $50,000 base price Porsche, but its steering feel is remarkably close, and its brake pedal feel is better.

New Mazda CX-30 to gain 186 kW turbocharged 2,5-litre engine – report

Mazda looks set to drop its latest turbocharged 2,5-litre petrol engine into the new CX-30, according to a fresh report out of the United States.

CarsDirect.com claims the CX-30 will soon gain the same blown four-pot employed by the hottest version of the Mazda3, likewise offered exclusively in conjunction with all-wheel drive.

The US-based publication cites an “early order guide” showing the CX-30 Turbo will generate the same 186 kW and 434 N.m (when run on 93-octane fuel) as the Mazda3. When fed 87-octane petrol, those peak outputs fall to 169 kW and 420 N.m.

Expect a smattering of styling upgrades for this model too, including the adoption of black 18-inch alloy wheels, black side-mirror caps, a larger tailpipe, turbo badging and something called an engine “harmonic enhancer”.
