Hot crossover? New Mazda CX-30 gains 186 kW 2,5-litre turbopetrol!

Mazda in North America has revealed the new CX-30 Turbo, which uses the same 186 kW turbocharged 2,5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine as the hottest Mazda3.

Like the hatchback, this CX-30 Turbo seems likely to be limited to North America ... in the short term, at least.

In new CX-30 flagship, the Skyactiv-G 2,5 Turbo engine delivers 186 kW and 434 N.m when run on 93-octane fuel (or 169 kW and 420 N.m when fed 87-octane petrol). As with the Mazda3, the engine sends its grunt to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Set to hit the market in the United States by the end of 2020, the CX-30 Turbo is further set apart by “subtle” exterior updates such as black 18-inch alloy wheels, larger tailpipes, gloss-black side-mirror caps and “Turbo” badging.

It’s been a long time coming but Mazda will finally introduce the new CX-30 SUV in South Africa in February 2021.

Mazda had plans to bring the CX-30 to local market early in 2020 but Covid-19 happened and a delay was inevitable. Now, Mazda has confirmed that the CX-30 will launch locally in February 2021.

The CX-30 compact SUV will slot in between the brand’s CX-3 crossover and CX-5 family car and is built on the same platform as the new Mazda3 while also sharing the same engine offerings and suspension.

Mazda’s appealing Kodo design philosophy shines through with a coupe-like silhouette enhancing the CX-30’s kerb appeal appreciably. The interior is typically Mazda in its design execution which is to say that it’s neat with a minimalist design and comes equipped with an 8.8-inch infotainment system as well as a Bose sound system.

New Mazda CX-30: prices and specs for South Africa finally revealed!

Mazda Southern Africa has finally added the CX-30 to its local range, with the newcomer slotting in between the smaller CX-3 and the larger CX-5.

Revealed back in April 2019, the sleekly styled CX-30 measures 4 395 mm in length, making it 120 mm longer than the CX-3 and 150 mm shorter than the CX-5.

The local CX-30 line-up comprises three derivatives at launch (with a choice of nine exterior colours), each powered by Mazda’s familiar naturally aspirated 2,0-litre SkyActiv-G engine, which sends 121 kW and 213 N.m to the front axle via a six-speed automatic transmission. As a reminder, this powertrain is also used in latest Mazda3 hatch and sedan line-up.

The new CX-30 range kicks off with the 2,0L Active at R469 000, with the mid-spec Dynamic variant coming in at R499 000. The Individual flagship, meanwhile, is priced at R540 000.

Whilst I'm happy with my new CX-5 2.5, its no slouch, I cannot understand why Mazda doesn't bring in the 2.5 Turbo?

Same with the CX-30, the 2.0L will no doubt be relatively nippy as those Skyactiv engines are, but there's Turbo versions too. They just don't want to bring them in :(

I was really undecided between a Haval H6C and Hyundai Tucson 1.6T vs my Mazda because their engines had far more torque and power, but in the end the driveability and spec of the Mazda won. But really if there was a Turbocharged engine from Mazda it wouldn't even have been a contest.

For the record, the CX-30 is 4395mm long and 1795mm wide, giving it a similar footprint to the Audi Q3 and Nissan Qashqai, while the CX-5 (4550mm by 1840mm) slots neatly between the Ford Kuga and Toyota Rav4.

It is worth noting, however, that the next-generation CX-5 is expected to move upmarket to rival premium brands, and so the CX-30 is likely to serve the current vehicle’s audience.

The new CX-30 is powered by the same 2-litre normally aspirated Skyactiv-G petrol engine that serves its bigger brother, with outputs of 121kW at 6000rpm and 213Nm from 4000 revs. But whereas the CX-5 is still offered with a manual gearbox option, the CX-30 is only fitted with Mazda’s six-speed automatic transmission, which makes sense in this day and age.

Mazda’s 2.5-liter, 250-horsepower turbocharged engine made headlines when it was introduced in the new Mazda 3. For 2021 the engine has made its way into the CX-30, which slots between the CX-3 and CX-5 but has measurements that bring it confusingly close to both models.

Mazda has been reaching for that shiny “premium” title and the CX-50 seems to have positioned both the engine and the model’s pricing to reflect this. The base CX-30 Turbo starts at $29,900. Oddly, this price is $50 cheaper than the Premium trim with the non-turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive. (The
CX-30 with the non-turbo engine with front-drive starts at $28,550.)

There are three trim levels for the CX-30 Turbo: the aforementioned $29,900 base model; the Premium trim for $32,300 and Premium Plus for $33,900.

So that would explain why it costs the same as the CX 5 but has less specs. But no one knows when the new CX 5 is being revealed.

Mazda CX-30 (2021) Launch Review

Summary

The Mazda CX-30 makes a strong case for itself. While we weren’t enthusiastic about the powertrain’s noisy nature at higher revs, we’re readily prepared to give it a 2nd chance at sea level and with perhaps a more "run-in mileage" on the odo' before making a final judgement. That being said, the engine’s coarseness is just one small minor blemish on what’s a modern, stylish and well-thought-out compact family car.

Not only does it look the part, but the levels of fit and finish are right up there with the best in the segment. The cabin is refreshingly minimalist; it allows the driver to focus on enjoying the driving experience!

Famly-car buyers who were put off by the CX-3’s restricted load-bay capacity (and didn’t want to stretch their budgets to the larger CX-5) now have another modern and stylish SUV to add to their shortlist.

Mazda’s new compact family car offering comes in at an interesting price point, too. While it is marketed as a split down the middle between the CX-3 and CX-5, it’s pricing leans towards the CX-5's. Granted, the CX-5 is fairly long in the tooth and we’re expecting an updated model to be revealed during the course of 2021, but the CX-30 also feels like a far more modern offering that its aforementioned siblings.
