MG HS

MG Motor UK announced the launch of its new flagship model, All New MG HS, a quality C-segment SUV designed for quality family moments. All New MG HS offers buyers an exciting and high-quality alternative to the conventional choices with a sporty exterior and a family friendly interior with soft-touch materials used throughout. By combining high quality with keen pricing, All New MG HS creates a new definition of affordable luxury for new car buyers in the UK.

All New MG HS has been designed to look purposeful, sporty and perfectly at home on British and European roads. At the front, the latest iteration of MG's stellar field grille perfectly frames the largest MG logo yet. At the rear, twin tailpipes and an aluminium lower bumper add a classy and sporty finish.

Inside, soft-touch materials reign supreme as MG's designers have prioritised comfort and quality to make the cabin a very inviting place. The well-appointed driving position and roomy seats make All New MG HS a quality space for quality family moments. Front passengers can enjoy class leading shoulder-, hip- and head-room with soft-touch materials in all the right places. Piano key buttons, turbine design air vents and soft-touch door cards are pleasingly tactile, adding to the sense of comfort and quality inside the car. Rear seat passengers are catered for too with the reclining seats offering bags of space, twin air vents, two USBs and a sleek fold-out arm rest, which cleverly opens to reveal storage space and twin cup holders.

All New MG HS is powered by MG's latest 162PS turbo petrol engine in all three versions; entry level Explore; mid-level Excite and top level Exclusive. All versions are available with a six-speed manual transmission with a seven-speed DCT transmission available as an option on Excite and Exclusive versions. Exclusive DCT versions also include a steering wheel-mounted 'Super Sport' button, which engages the car's Sport mode and illuminates the interior's red ambient lighting.

MG HS 1.5 T-GDI Exclusive 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

The MG HSs’ combination of impressive comfort and practicality, more than respectable performance, refinement and drivability, passable ride and handling and fairly surprising interior richness should amount to quite a lot more than most reasonable customers will expect from it. They should also present a fairly convincing argument for what is, after all, a full-sized and pretty versatile family car that’s priced like an upmarket supermini – and that comes with a seven-year warranty and plenty of standard equipment.

It’ll be likely to suit lower-mileage private buyers much better than company car drivers, mind you – and its suitability to those will depend in part on MG’s delivery of some appealing finance deals and of competitive cost of insurance, both of which are still to be confirmed.

But if MG can do enough on both of those fronts to make the HS as affordable in practice as it promises to be, it’ll be worth more than a second thought from people who are looking for big on a small budget and who aren’t willing to accept more austere family transport that makes them feel like they’re missing out.

MG Motor UK (SAIC) did have a pretty little 2-seater convertible available for the UK market between 2007 & 2011 - the refreshed MG TF 135 with the uprated N-Series engine, which eliminated the head-gasket failure issues suffered with earlier K-Series engined models, manufactured by the MG Rover Group from 2002 until their demise in April 2005.

Yeah I know, and thats what they should be doing as their flagship model again.....

Make the other stuff, if it sells, but I want to see a "little' British sportscar again...

MG HS Launch Review - Auto Bears

This is MG's new flagship SUV which replaces the GS SUV which struggled to make a real impression on the segment.

With this new HS we have a new look, new engine and technology. However the big standout feature on the new HS is quality on the interior. At £24,495, I have never seen so much soft touch and leatherette featured on an interior.

MG have really pulled out all the stops on this new car.

MG Pilot also features on this new HS after making its introduction on the ZS EV.

Engine wise we have a 1.5 L Turbocharged petrol engine, mated to a 6-speed manual or Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) which is fitted to the car I've tested.

See what I think of this all-new HS. Oh and the blue metallic colour is called "Brixton Blue".

MG to bring HS plug-in hybrid to UK in 2020

MG will import the eHS petrol-electric SUV from China next year, and it’s set to be the most powerful MG since 2005

MG is planning to introduce a plug-in hybrid HS next year as parent company SAIC has elected to import the model to the UK, a company spokesman has confirmed to Autocar.

Set to arrive towards the end of next year, the MG eHS 500 was revealed and went on sale at the Guangzhou motor show in China last month. It will rival models such as the Peugeot 3008 PHEV and Vauxhall Grandland X PHEV, both of which are due in UK showrooms in the coming weeks.

Details of what exactly the car heading to the UK will share with its Chinese counterpart remain undisclosed. However, the home market eHS features a 166bhp 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and a 121bhp electric motor, combined and put through a ten-speed automatic gearbox for a system output of 301bhp. That's unlikely to change, and would make it the most powerful MG to launch since the V8-powered SV sports car of 2003.

With the entry-level Explore version costing £17,495, rising to nearly £25,000 for top-spec, it significantly undercuts many of its SUV rivals.

But does that relatively low price tag equate to a lack of quality? The answer is no, not noticeably. Materials throughout the cabin are surprisingly plush, while the HS also feels pretty decent to drive.

In terms of looks, it boasts a sporty exterior, with a purposeful-looking front end and bold, strong lines throughout.
At the front, the latest iteration of MG’s stellar field grille frames the large MG logo - said to be the largest yet.

Roof rails, twin tailpipes and an aluminium lower bumper add to the eye-catching appearance, while large 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels provide a bold statement.

The bright LED headlights and rear lights both feature sequential indicators on Exclusive versions, such as the one tested here.

What stands out?

While the MG badge is synonymous with English sports cars, the MG HS is a Chinese-built medium SUV that provides excellent value in terms of pricing and features. Both versions have premium look-and-and feel interiors and a range of driver assistance features such as autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
