New MG HS plug-in hybrid arrives with 32-mile electric range

Electrified version of flagship SUV packs 254bhp and is now on sale from £29,995

MG has ushered in its first plug-in hybrid with a new electrified variant of its HS flagship SUV, available to order next month from £29,995.

The PHEV will be sold alongside the all-new 5 electric estate and the smaller ZS EV, as MG targets 50% of total sales being EVs and PHEVs by 2021. It currently claims to have the highest proportional EV mix of any mainstream manufacturer with a combustion offering.

The new HS Plug-in pairs a 160bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 121bhp electric motor for a combined output of 254bhp and a 0-62mph time of 7.5sec. Power is sent to the front wheels from both power sources through a newly developed 10-speed automatic gearbox that is claimed to “optimise power delivery and efficiency”.

A 16.6kWh battery pack gives an electric-only range of 32 miles and can be charged to full capacity in three hours using a Type 2 charger. Unlike the 5 and ZS EV, the HS Plug-in’s charging port is located on the opposite side to the fuel filler, rather than underneath the front grille.

MG HS Plug-in Hybrid 2022 UK review

This HS PHEV doesn’t do anything radically different to the norm. Five seats, electric-only running of just over 30 miles, a 10.1in touchscreen: so far, so 2022. But its price tag, even if it is about £10,000 more than the petrol HS, is a marker of MG’s intent. Its sales totals are only going one way.

Facelifted £23,495 SUV gets more aggressive design and a new infotainment system

The MG HS has received upgraded technology, an improved infotainment system and a more aggressive-looking front end as part of a facelift.

The SAIC-owned manufacturer's flagship SUV now features a sharper-lined front bumper and more pronounced beltline, alongside a wider grille and multifunction LED headlights that have also grown in size to enhance the model's credentials as the firm's largest offering.

At the rear, the car gains a new bumper, revised LED tail-lights and redesigned exhaust outlets. The SUV’s 18in alloy wheels are now also available with a new diamond-cut design, while an optional Urban Grey exterior paint colour is available for the first time.

Order books are now open in the UK, with prices starting at £23,495 for standard SE trim, rising to £29,995 for range-topping Trophy specification. The HS comes in £3055 cheaper than the Skoda Karoq and £2975 cheaper than the Nissan Qashqai - two of its main rivals.

Entry-level SE trim has multifunction LED headlights with front and rear scrolling indicators - a first for MG - keyless entry and a rear parking camera. Top-rung Trophy specification brings leather upholstery, ambient lighting and dual-zone climate control.

Summary

While the MG HS represents yet another Chinese SUV set to make landfall in early 2025, it is bound to make quite a good impression. The MG badge still holds value, and SAIC has respected this fact by producing vehicles that don’t feel like exploitative cash grabs.

Instead, they feel well-built, nurtured and honed for a public that knows what they want in this segment. It looks great, albeit indistinct and is quite unlike the MGs you may remember: It conducts itself like the European cars that must certainly have been its inspiration at some point, but will now be its competition.

Official pricing will be released soon, but I’d guess between R550k and R620k depending on the derivative. MG SA will offer the MG HS with an impressive (and confidence-inspiring) 7-year/unlimited km warranty on the engine, a 5-year/200 000 km general warranty and a 5-year/90 000 km service plan.

Officially relaunched in South Africa after an 8-year pause, the MG Motor range kicks off with the entry-level ZS (Core) crossover and tops out with the flagship Cyberster electric roadster. But what’s in the middle? Well, the MG HS family SUV neatly fills that slot.

Measuring 4 655 mm from front to back (with a wheelbase of 2 765 mm), the MG HS arrives in Mzansi in 2nd-generation form – sharing much with parent company SAIC Motor’s Chinese-market Roewe RX5 – and is quite close in size to the Haval H6. It’s also very similarly priced.
