Range Rover D350 review: sensible diesel Rangie tested in the UK

Sounds like a pretty sorted piece of kit.

It’s a magnificent bit of kit, and a refreshing modern luxury car, because it doesn’t seek to bombard you with gadgets and woo you with technology. It’s Jeeves with wellies on, not Elon Musk.

With an on-the road price now stretching into six figures, a Range Rover is a very expensive car. But it’s also a fabulously rounded product, taking the rough diamond of an idea conceived 40 years ago and burnishing it to near perfection. And diesel does nothing to tarnish that.

Should I buy one?

It’s the versatility that impresses us most. On our day’s acquaintance with this D350, we experienced near-Rolls Royce luxury and Land Rover Defender off-road ability within 15 minutes of one another. Chuck in much-improved rear space, the practicality of a huge boot, a tailgate you can sit on and a new level of city manoeuvrability via the four-wheel steering and you have one of the most versatile cars on the planet.

Small wonder Range Rover has had so many serial owners in its 52-year history. Small wonder, especially, that JLR already has 10,000 orders from owners keen to switch to the new model. They’re making a good decision.

Summary

The new Range Rover effectively maintains the appeal of the British brand’s eponymous model – the German premium marques’ models are simply not in the same league. The presence and respect that the badge brings to the table offer prospective buyers something extra special, which is exactly what they are after at this price point. The Rangey still has unquestionable off-road ability, which many of its rivals no longer offer, and its on-road dynamics are better than ever.

The interior, meanwhile, is opulent and has been modernised with all the latest connectivity options you could possibly want, but some of the material choices feel like they don’t quite match up to the price tag the Range Rover demands.

The engines and ride quality are from the top drawer; they provide the perfect backing to the Range Rover’s luxurious underpinnings and play no small role in defining its regal character.

There’s so much more that can be said about the New Range Rover and how Land Rover has thought about every little detail and if you take one or two exotic marques out of the equation, I firmly believe that it is currently the most complete vehicle on the planet.
