New 2022 BMW i7: official shots show electric 7 Series testing

New i7 electric luxury saloon will rival the Mercedes-Benz EQS with iX-based powertrain

BMW has released the first official images of the i7 luxury electric saloon, which is currently undergoing winter testing ahead of an expected 2022 launch.

Disguised prorotypes of the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS rival were shown completing final suspension tuning at the firm's winter test centre in Arjeplog, Sweden.

BMW has confirmed the new EV will use its fifth-generation eDrive system, which is currently found in the iX electric luxury SUV. It will ride on BMW’s flexible CLAR platform, which is already used for the iX and the i4 electric saloon, as well as ICE models including the latest 2 Series Coupé.

Although powertrain specifics remain under wraps, the dual-motor setup used by the iX xDrive50 produces 516bhp. In this form, the iX is capable of 0-62mph in 4.6sec and an electronically limited 124mph top speed, so the i7 should post broadly similar figures.

The iX will initially be available in three forms, xDrive40, xDrive50 and top-rung M60, with the latter packing more than 600bhp, and the i7 is likely to roughly follow suit.

The 105.2kWh lithium ion battery pack in the iX is claimed to be capable of up to 390 miles of range, and if equipped with the same unit, the lower-slung i7 could improve upon that.

BMW is expected to officially unveil the i7 in the coming months, ahead of a launch towards the end of 2022.

Upcoming BMW i7 officially previewed as all-electric luxury saloon

The BMW i7 has been officially previewed by the brand under a camouflage wrap during its rigorous winter testing. The Munich-based manufacturer confirms that the upcoming all-electric saloon will be presented in 2022.

Within the framework of its series development process, the BMW i7 is currently undergoing driving dynamics testing on the premises of the BMW Group winter test centre in Arjeplog, Sweden. There, just a few kilometres away from the Arctic Circle, test engineers find the frozen surfaces and snow-covered roads offering the ideal preconditions for the integrated application of all drive and suspension systems.

The suspension components, steering and braking systems as well as driving dynamics and vehicle stability systems are being developed for the future generation of the BMW 7 Series. The brand claims that these are being designed to raise the balance between sportiness and ride comfort to the next level.

Look! It’s the BMW i7 electric luxury saloon

The electric BMW i7 is coming in 2022, and the car is going through its final testing phase near the arctic circle

Camouflage be damned: this is our first official look at the new BMW i7, an electric luxury saloon that’s set to arrive some time in 2022.

BMW claims that the i7 will be the first of its kind, conveniently forgetting that we’ve already had a go in the Mercedes EQS. But no matter. It’ll be billed as the electric version of the next-generation 7 Series, using the same CLAR platform found in the i4 saloon and iX SUV.

The German firm has confirmed that the i7 will use the same fifth-gen eDrive tech as the iX, which runs a dual-motor powertrain for all-wheel drive and up to 516bhp in its most powerful xDrive 50 guise. Until it’s knocked off its perch by the M Performance division’s forthcoming 60M variant, that is.

0-62mph in the iX takes as little as 4.6 seconds, so we can expect similar numbers (if not better, given its sleeker profile) from the i7. The iX’s 71 and 105kWh battery options deliver 257 and 380 miles of range respectively on paper, so it’s feasible that the i7 will offer an improvement here too.

The i7 Is BMW's Answer To The Mercedes EQS

BMW released new "spy shots" and confirmed the name.

There is a whole economy of photographers who take “spy shots” of preproduction cars and then sell those shots to publications, including, in the past, rags like Jalopnik, but, increasingly, manufacturers are opting to cut out the middle man and release their own pictures. Cue the BMW and the i7.

This is the car that will eventually replace the 7 Series, an all-electric luxury sedan, or saloon if you’re British, that looks like an all-electric sedan, with lights in interesting places and a charging port. BMW said it had the i7 out recently doing some testing in snowy, cold conditions in Arjeplog, Sweden. BMW says the i7 is “the world’s first all-electric luxury saloon,” which I guess is based on the fact that the Mercedes EQS and Tesla Model S are liftbacks, but, hmm.

Anyway, BMW said the formal launch will be next year. In the meantime, it wants to ensure prospective buyers that it is putting the i7 through its paces in the cold.

Suspension components, together with steering, braking and vehicle stability systems, that are being developed for the future generation of the BMW 7 Series will be honed to perfection in the extreme climate. Specifically, springs, dampers and various regulating systems will be subject to performance-orientated tuning to ensure maximum driver feedback and enjoyment to match the several different drive modes.

Amongst the extremely challenging winter conditions, Lapland’s frozen lakes with their low road friction coefficient provide the opportunity for meticulous development of the steering, Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) and the accurately regulated interaction between friction brake and deceleration by means of energy recuperation.

The intensive winter testing programme also focuses on the components of the all-electric drive system. The BMW i7’s electric drive, high-voltage battery, power electronics and charging technology all originate from the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology, which already provides exceptional sustainable driving pleasure in the BMW iX. Above all, it is the motor, the battery and the temperature control system of the BMW i7 that prove their advanced technology and durability in the extreme sub-zero temperatures common to the north of Sweden.

2023 BMW i7 teased during acoustic test

BMW is preparing to launch its full-size EV sedan, and in the latest episode of its teaser campaign, the carmaker shows the 2023 i7 in full camouflage undergoing its sound emissions testing at BMW’s Research and Innovation Center (FIZ) in Munich. This is where the vehicle is tested for sound in the cabin, as well as the sounds emitted when the vehicle is being driven.

The test incorporates motor noise, rolling noise, vibrations, and sounds produced by wind noise. Artificial noises emitted are required for pedestrians to be able to hear a slowly approaching EV, that would otherwise produce very little sound.

In addition to developing a bespoke mount for the electric motors on the i7, a foam absorber is used in the tires, along with flush door handles to diminish road and wind noise in the cabin. Since there’s no engine to counteract noises the EV will make, BMW is careful to ensure that there aren’t any unwanted sounds in the cabin while driving.

BMW i7 sedan teased - here’s how it will eliminate (most) irritating noises

BMW is getting ready to pull the covers off its large electric sedan, called the i7. It’s set to be revealed later this year alongside the conventional new 7 Series range, as BMW isn’t doing two separate model lines like Mercedes is with EQS and S-Class.

BMW board chairman Oliver Zipse confirmed back in 2020 that the new flagship sedan would offer four powertrain options: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric.

It seems BMW is particularly proud of the i7 version, and particularly its levels of noise suppression, given that the carmaker has released a whole wad of information on what it’s doing to eliminate unwanted sounds from its upcoming EV. Shutting up passengers will still be the driver’s responsibility, however BMW is adamant that it has virtually eliminated all other acoustic disturbances.

- i7 is expected to deliver the most serene driving experience of any BMW that's come before it.

It's no secret that BMW is readying its Mercedes-Benz EQS challenger, the all-new i7. The new range-topping all-electric BMW has already undergone durability testing, and now, it's time to tune the acoustics inside the vehicle to ensure it delivers the most serene driving experience imaginable.

New 2022 BMW i7 EV and BMW 7 Series to arrive on 20 April

New i7 electric luxury saloon will rival the Mercedes-Benz EQS with iX-based powertrain

The all-new 2022 BMW 7 Series will be revealed on 20 April in pure-combustion, plug-in hybrid and, for the first time, pure-electric forms - allowing it to complete with the combustion-powered Mercedes-Benz S-Class as well as the electric EQS.

Munich's new flagship is described by the manufacturer as "tech magic at its best", and will be equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving functionality from launch later this year.

BMW has confirmed the most powerful version of the 7 Series will be fully electric.

2023 BMW 7 Series Teased With Massive Grille

The all-electric BMW i7 is also the most powerful BMW 7 Series.

If you are a BMW fan and in particular a 7 Series fan, then put the 20th of April in your diaries as that is when the new 7 and i7 will break cover.

BMW decided to share a few teaser images with us and as you can see the car will inherit the large kidney grille from the Concept XM.

There will be a thin LED strip as the daytime running lights as the main clusters are located lower on the bumper.

There is also an extra screen with built-in controls on the passenger side of the dash, called “Interaction Bar.”

The new BMW 7 Series is absolutely trail-blazing in every respect. Like no other model, the BMW 7 Series stands for BMW’s innovative strength,” says Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG for Development.

Here's your first look at the brand new electric BMW 7 Series

Ahead of its launch, BMW releases a few teaser images of the i7 saloon

Yep, it's now apparently a "hallmark BMW design feature". Ahead of the new deluxe limo's full launch in a few weeks, BMW has released a few teaser pics of its new flagship and S-Class rival: the 7 Series.

It'll be launched in April as both a regular combustion-engined car, and a fully electric saloon running with an 'i7' tag. The electric version, says BMW, will become the most powerful 7 Series on offer. Times are changing.

Exemplified no doubt, by that new face. Clearly taking cues from the BMW iX, the new 7 showcases BMW's 'hallmark' kidney grille - this time with an illuminated frame - matched to a pair of very slim lights made from crystal glass elements. Yeah, let's move quickly on to the tech.

Indeed, BMW reckons it'll move very quickly, and far. The company is claiming a range of around 380 miles for the i7. The 523bhp iX xDrive 50 offers similar range from its 105.2kWh battery, with a 0-62mph time of 4.6s, for some reference. Should be good to drive, at least according to its makers. BMW's Frank Weber said: "It combines the best driving experience with the ultimate digital experience. This makes it the ideal vehicle for forward-thinking, responsible decision-makers and avant-garde pioneers."

BMW shares first details about its upcoming i7

In a short blogpost, BMW shared a couple of key specs and features about its upcoming luxury i7 sedan, which is, the electric version of the BMW 7 series. The shared images suggest that BMW is staying true to its roots but the post also suggests that some design details have been reworked and modernized. The oval-shaped headlights, for example, seem to be replaced with aggressive-looking strips.

The sedan is said to have a combined power consumption of 18.9-19.7 kWh/100 km. The WLTP range should vary between 580km and 610km.

As part of the next-generation iDrive operating system, My Modes will allow the driver to adjust almost every aspect of the driving experience, including the ambient light. There's also going to be a curved display and a new function strip placed on the instrument panel.

New BMW 7 Series teaser previews futuristic design and ‘cinematic’ cabin

Described as “trail-blazing in every respect” the new BMW i7 and its all-electric i7 sibling are set to be revealed in April, the Bavarian carmaker has confirmed.

What you see here are the first teaser images of the new BMW 7 Series and i7, and although they don’t reveal too much, we do get a glimpse of the bold new front end design as well as the futuristic cabin. The new model features slim new headlights, with upper light elements made of crystal glass, and the illuminated kidney grille is bigger than ever.

The cabin promises an innovative user experience thanks to the new ‘My Modes’ feature as well as the latest generation iDrive operating system and a new Curved Display.

According to BMW, My Modes will enable the driver to precisely customise the car’s driving characteristics and interior ambience.

BMW shares first details about i7 - coming on April 20

BMW has revealed the first details about the i7 EV on its official US website. The car is now listed as coming soon and there's a first official drivetrain - the i7 xDrive60.

BMW shared that the i7 xDrive60 will have a range of 324 miles (around 520 km), which is the same as BMW's iX xDrive50.

In the US the drivetrain has 516hp and 564 lb-ft (around 760nm) of torque, though it stands to reason that BMW will give the i7 a bit more than the iX.

On the landing page for the i7 on BMW's US website there's a video, sharing details about the EV's trim and smarts. It will feature the recognizable large kidney grills, and they'll be illuminated like on other recent beemers.

The i7 will also feature dual crystal headlights, which BMW says are made of crystal glass.

First drive: 2022 BMW i7 prototype review

Big electric-powered BMW saloon impresses with its brisk performance, overall agility and outstanding refinement. Still, there’s a lot here to still to learn

The i7 is the technological spearhead of the upcoming Mk7 (G70) 7 Series and BMW’s largest and most luxurious electric car to date.

Related models are in the pipeline, including mild-hybrid diesels and petrol-electric plug-in hybrids. However, it is the advanced i7, with a 500bhp-plus dual-motor electric drivetrain in the initial four-wheel-drive model, that will kick off sales of BMW’s new flagship four-door in November, promising a range, we’re told, of close to 400 miles on the WLTP test cycle.

To learn more about the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS rival, Autocar joined a round of i7 shakedown tests with a team of BMW engineers in Germany before the car’s unveiling later this month.

BMW i7 early drive reveals key specs ahead of April 20 announcement

The people over at BMW Blog were lucky enough to get invited to Munich and spend some time with the pre-production BMW i7 before its announcement on April 20.

What follows is an impromptu hands-on impressions video of what the car is like to drive.

The video doesn't share many details like horsepower and torque, nor does it reveal whether it's all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. We did get a confirmation that there will be multiple drivetrains available, so likely both will be up for grabs. Sadly, the car itself is running in camouflage so we can't fully see its design.

You can park the new BMW i7 with an app

The new BMW i7 and 7 series will both be able to drive autonomously for up to 200 meters with the help of Reversing Assistant Professional, Parking Assistant Professional and Remote Maneuver Assistant - all neatly combined into the BMW app. And it will be possible to control the car from the outside - look Mom, no hands!

The new Parking Assistant will upgrade the length of the pre-recorded path that the car can follow from 50 to 200 meters. It will be possible to control it from the outside of the vehicle within 6 meters from it (20 feet) which will be really appreciated in tight parking spaces like underground garages. It will be possible to pre-record a route for the car to follow and then watch it pull out of the garage and stop right by the front door as long as the route is not longer than 200 meters. Owners of huge mansions with 500 meter driveways may struggle but the rest of us will enjoy watching shocked neighbors early in the morning.

The car can remember 10 different paths, it can store 4 paths in the same location and it will happily help you find free parking space suitable for it as well as asking you whether to park front or rear first - very useful when you have a boot full of shopping.
