2022 BMW i7

BMW i7, AKA electric version of the new 7 Series, teased ahead of 20 April debut

In a week from now BMW will pull the covers off its first-ever i7 as a flagship electric sedan that will rival the Mercedes EQS.

The new BMW i7 will also usher in a new 7 Series family, which is expected to offer a wide range of powertrains in addition to the all-electric i7, from petrol to diesel and hybrid. While technical details remain scarce for now, BMW has promised that the i7 will boast a driving range of over 600km.

BMW has also released a new teaser image showing the i7’s huge illuminated kidney grille and slim headlights, which have upper light elements made from crystal glass.

Although it’s not built on a dedicated EV platform like its Mercedes and Tesla counterparts, BMW says the new i7 and 7 Series will be “trail-blazing in every respect”.

Its cabin is certainly at the cutting edge of luxury and tech from what we’ve heard so far.

Those sitting in the back of the new BMW 7 Series can look forward to a “unique cinematic experience” facilitated by an ultra-wide Theatre Screen that moves out the roof liner.

Imposing BMW i7 features an illuminated grille in contrasting teaser

We’re only a week away from the BMW i7 and its fossil fuel powered 7 Series counterpart being debuted to the world but the German brand has decided to tease the imposing BMW i7 which boasts a large, illuminated front grille in a single image.

In the image released by BMW, the latest flagship saloon is seductively shown in a dimly lit environment accentuating its overall form against a red wall, illuminated by the tail lights. However, this is done strategically to demonstrate the latest illuminated grille which the model boasts. If that is not convincing enough to be the latest saloon from BMW, the front badge is visible and is flanked by the two DRL lights which are directly above the main headlights in a split configuration – similar to shots of the model wearing heavy camouflage.

First images of BMW i7 already out

April 20th is only days away and it shows - the Internet is awash with spy shots of the upcoming BMW i7/7 duo. The latest round is courtesy of Instagram user Leaktveak. Two photos so far claiming to show exterior and interior on the latest BMW.

Photos appear to be legitimate - the exterior shot looks like it came out of an official press release, the details are consistent with the photos of camouflaged i7 we have seen before - the LED lights separated from main headlights which in turn sit much lower in the front bumper. There’s no walking away from that grille, you’ll be able to tell it’s a BMW even from the International Space Station.

The interior shot is quite interesting because you can see the other 7 or i7 through the windscreen - let’s take it step by step. The materials on the dashboard are again consistent with what we have seen from official sources, the screen has the floating design and it will most likely be joined with the driver’s instrument cluster. Above the screen on the dashboard we can see a speaker grill with a brand name on it - it’s really hard to tell what it is, maybe Harman?

New 2022 BMW i7: 600bhp EV luxury saloon coming today

New i7 will arrive alongside new BMW 7 Series to rival the Mercedes-Benz EQS with iX-based powertrain

The all-new 2022 BMW 7 Series will be revealed later today (20 April) in pure-combustion, plug-in hybrid and, for the first time, pure-electric forms - allowing it to complete with the combustion-powered Mercedes-Benz S-Class as well as the electric EQS.

Munich's new flagship is described by the manufacturer as "tech magic at its best", and will be equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving functionality from launch later this year.

BMW has confirmed the new EV will use its fifth-generation eDrive system, which is currently found in the iX electric luxury SUV. It will ride on BMW’s flexible CLAR platform, which is already used for the iX and the i4 electric saloon, as well as ICE models including the latest 2 Series Coupé.

Although powertrain specifics remain under wraps, the dual-motor setup used by the iX xDrive50 produces 516bhp. In this form, the iX is capable of 0-62mph in 4.6sec and an electronically limited 124mph top speed, so the i7 should post broadly similar figures. BMW has confirmed the most powerful version of the 7 Series will be fully electric.

The iX is available in three forms: xDrive40, xDrive50 and top-rung M60, with the latter packing more than 600bhp, and the i7 is likely to roughly follow suit. The firm estimates a maximum range of 305 miles per charge, based on results in testing.

BMW's i7 announcement spoiled by a last minute leak

BMW's i7 luxury sedan is coming later today, but there's still time to squeeze in the last leak, which shows the car from nearly all angles.

Seemingly from the same batch that arrived last week, these images give us a glimpse at the front, the rear and the inside of the i7.

On the front of the BMW i7, we see the lights that premiered in the latest BMW X7 combustion car. The iconic BMW double kidney grille is present as well and it hearkens back to the current 7-series' waterfall style with vertical chrome bars.

On the rear, we see slim, separate tail lights with a notable crease running under them. The bumper is aerodynamically shaped to allow for optimum airflow, and naturally, there are no exhaust cutouts.

Inside, the BMW i7 has the 31-inch Theatre Screen for the rear passengers - it's an 8K 32:9 widescreen that can tuck itself out of the way when not needed. The front has a digital light bar going through the dash. It features changing ambient lighting and touch controls for the air conditioning. There's a separate curved display for the driver.

It's been so long since I enjoyed the look of a new BMW  garish and over the top seems to be the trend. Timeless? I think not...

New 2022 BMW i7 is electric luxury saloon with 388-mile range

Radically styled Mercedes-Benz EQS rival touches down with the most advanced tech in Munich's stable

The all-new 2022 BMW 7 Series has spawned the i7 – the German car maker’s sixth and most luxurious electric model to date.

The new i7, due in the UK from December, is BMW's answer to the Mercedes-Benz EQS and Porsche Taycan. It will be sold as part of the eighth-generation 7 Series line-up, alongside more familiar petrol, plug-in hybrid and diesel options.

However, the emphasis is clearly on highlighting its electric capability in the UK, where the i7 xDrive60, with a combined 536bhp from two electric motors and a range of between 367 and 388 miles on the WLTP test cycle, will initially underpin sales before the planned arrival of more traditional diesel and petrol-electric plug-in hybrid models in 2023.

Prices for the i7 xDrive60 start at £107,400, just slightly cheaper than the equivalent version of its iX sibling.

It is not the only i7 model set for UK sale, though. An even more powerful i7 M70 xDrive with 597bhp is set to head the line-up from the middle of next year, promising performance to match the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53.

UK sales kick off with the electric-powered i7 xDrive60. It adopts a similar drivetrain to the iX xDrive60 with two electric motors – one with 252bhp at the front and another with 306bhp at the rear – tuned to develop a combined 536bhp and 549lb ft of torque. BMW claims a 0-62mph time of 4.7sec and a limited 149mph top speed.

In combination with a 101.7kWh lithium ion battery mounted within the floorpan, it also delivers combined consumption of between 18.4 and 19.6kWh/100km, giving it an official range of between 367 and 388 miles on the WLTP test cycle.

Charging can be achieved at up to 11kW on an AC system and at up to 195kW on a DC system, with BMW claiming a 10-minute charge on the latter can add as much as 106 miles to the range.

New 2022 BMW 7 Series revealed as larger, more luxurious flagship

Munich's all-electrified luxury saloon has been re-engineered from the ground up

The seventh incarnation of the BMW 7 Series, set to go on sale in November, has been comprehensively re-engineered as part of efforts to position it more upmarket than it has ever been. It is now significantly larger, more luxurious and more spacious than at any time in its 45-year history.

To give it the visual impact to go with its elevated positioning, BMW has provided its Mercedes-Benz S-Class rival with a bold new exterior design. The new look, driven largely by customer feedback in markets such as China and the US, instantly differentiates the new 7 Series from the sixth-generation model, launched in 2015.

“We wanted to give the new model a more striking appearance,” said Robert Kahlenberg, the 7 Series project director. “Customers in our largest markets are generally younger and demand a more contemporary look than perhaps what we’re used to in Europe, where the average age of buyers is higher.”

Up front, the large grille, consisting of two elements as on all recent BMW models, is even larger than before and comes with BMW’s ‘Iconic Lighting’ treatment, as first brought to the facelifted 8 Series. The separation of the headlamps, with the LED running lights positioned above and the main beams in a separate recess below, add greater presence while providing close visual ties with the recently facelifted BMW X7 – part of a concerted effort by BMW to more obviously link its two luxury cars.

A three-box silhouette with familiar long-bonnet proportions characterises the overall shape, which features smooth and largely unadorned surfaces throughout. Only two feature lines are evident along the flanks, which have a pronounced shoulder running from the outer tip of the running lights through to the tail-lights. As on the BMW iX, door handles with an internal touchpad and electronic mechanism replace traditional handles.

The new mad-looking BMW i7 limo has a folding cinema inside

All-electric mega-saloon has a mighty big screen – and BMW’s most controversial design yet

Luxury limousines are all about the tech, the gadgets, the features. And yet… it’s the looks, isn’t it? You need a moment to absorb how the new BMW i7 actually looks.

Imposing. Aggressive. Wantonly vulgar? It’s proof – if it were needed – that BMW just doesn’t give a damn if you don’t like its design direction right now. The M3 was controversial, the iX was strange, and now the i7 moves the game on again. To the comments section!

Actually, let’s back up a second and explain the i7. This is the new 7 Series. Unlike Mercedes (which builds petrol and diesel S-Classes and then creates a different all electric limo – the EQS – in a new bodyshell) BMW is staying old-school. Build one car, then offer it with or without batteries.

So the 7 Series can be specced with a straight six or V8 engines (no V12 this time) – or as a purely battery-powered i7. Incidentally, all 7s coming to the UK will have a charging cable – we’re only getting the plug-in hybrids and this i7. The unplugged straight-six and V8 engines are confined to the US and China. Meanwhile Europe will get a brand-new diesel engine.

The i7 doesn’t need a massive grille for cooling because it doesn’t have an engine, but because it shares its look with the 7 Series it gets the huge nostrils. BMW makes a feature out of it by encircling the grilles with a light strip. Meanwhile, the headlights tuck under the LED running lights, which are optionally festooned with shimmering Swarovski crystals.

Out back, the numberplate drops into the bumper, so the big Bangle-esque bootlid is back. The BMW badge is enormous, to cover the pop-up washer jet for the rear-view camera. From just about every angle, it’s a very upright and traditionally statesmanlike saloon with punchy detailing.

Why? BMW says sales data proves the key markets – America and China – love chrome, grilles and uber-aggression. This is Munich giving the (very wealthy business) people what they want. There’s no short or long-wheelbase choice this time: the one-size-fits-all 7 is 130mm longer, 48mm wider and 51mm taller than the old long-wheelbase 7. Yikes.

BMW’s New 7 Series Puts Electric Power Front And Center

The 7 Series has been updated with a new design and an electric model that boasts up to 300 miles of range.

The BMW 7 Series has been the star atop BMW’s range since 1977. Over the years, the flagship sedan has cemented its place as one of the top picks for rich people in the market for a luxurious car that packs in more features than most houses. So whenever BMW decides it’s time for an update, the German firm tends to throw everything at it.

And this year is no different, as the seventh generation 7 Series is another big step forward for the sedan. There is a new design, new interior with what BMW calls the “Theater Screen” and, for the first time in the model’s history, an all-electric variant sits at the top of the range.

Let’s start with that all-electric 7 Series. Named the i7 xDrive60, the electric model features two electric motors that have a combined output of 536 HP and 549 lb-ft of torque. This means that the i7 can sprint from 0-60 in about 4.5 seconds and also boasts a range of “up to 300 zero-emission miles.”

But BMW isn’t going all in on its new electric drivetrain, and will also offer the 740i with a three-liter six cylinder engine and the 760i xDrive with a 4.4-liter V8. Both gas-powered models come with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

It’s also worth noting that the 740i is less powerful than the i7. While the 760i has the same horsepower, according to figures shared by BMW at the car’s launch.
