BMW transfers Neue Klasse design and tech into its big boy saloon

Well, it’s certainly something. Here’s how BMW has interpreted the grace of its neue Neue Klasse design language for the big dog of the range. For this be the brand-new BMW 7 Series, and… well, it’s certainly something.

Something… dare we say, interesting? This heavily updated 7er now boasts an entirely new front end dominated by that “reprofiled” kidney grille and ultra-slim headlights that give the limo a distinct air that it’s silently judging you.

It’s immeasurably cleaner and more cohesive than the outgoing 7, that’s for sure, and we suspect that out in the big scary real world, this thing will look immensely imposing. Looks really sweet out back, with slim lights reaching across the centre and – overall – a less fussy, much blockier vibe.

Powering all this bulk will be three fully-electric cars – that’ll be versions of the i7 – and a pair of plug-in hybrid ones – badged up as yer traditional 7 Series – launching in the UK. Now’s the time you need to take a deep breath while we whisk you into a frothy world of Numbers.

Meet the facelifted BMW 7 Series. Yes, the Munich-based brand has just revealed a refreshed version of its G70-series flagship sedan – and it’s already been confirmed for South Africa.

According to BMW Group Africa, the facelifted 7 Series – which will officially enter production at the firm’s Dingolfing factory in July 2026 – is scheduled to arrive in Mzansi at some point in the final quarter of 2026.

The German automaker claims the refreshed 7 Series represents “the most extensive model update ever carried out by the BMW Group”. It also says this model’s launch “marks the beginning of a technology rollout” from which “all future BMW cars will benefit”.

We’ll leave you to decide what to make of the latest exterior design language, which here includes yet another take on the brand’s kidney grille as well as what BMW describes as “minimalist crystal headlights” and redesigned taillamps (plus the option of 22-inch alloy wheels).

 
2027 BMW 7-Series gets a high-tech makeover

BMW is changing the way it builds its most expensive sedan. The 2027 BMW 7-Series is a preview of how all future BMW electric cars will work. Even though this car still uses some older parts, it now carries the brains of the "Neue Klasse" models. The car is smarter, lighter, and packed with screens that might make your living room look old.

The outside of the new 7-Series has a familiar look. The famous front grille is now wider and not as tall as before - it even glows. The main headlights are tucked away in the bumper, while the thin daytime lights sit higher up. BMW is using more body-colored plastic on the front this time. The two-tone paint job we see in the photos takes 75 hours to finish, but it might not be for everyone. At the back, the taillights are longer, and the car features a new matte logo.

Inside the cabin, things get more interesting. BMW added a "Panoramic Vision" system. This projects information across the entire bottom of the windshield. There is a large 17.9-inch screen in the middle. For the first time, the front passenger gets their own 14.6-inch screen. They can play games or watch movies. However, a camera watches the driver. If the driver looks at the passenger's screen, the display dims so they don't get distracted.

Passengers in the back seat still get the 31.3-inch Theater Screen. This 8K display now works like a tablet thanks to new touch controls. It also has a camera for Zoom calls and an HDMI port to plug in a laptop. If you pay extra, you get a 36-speaker Bowers and Wilkins sound system with 1,925 W of power. Even the standard car comes with 18 speakers and 575 watts.

BMW 7 Series facelift debuts with Neue Klasse tech, fresh design and EV range boost

BMW’s ‘Neue Klasse’ revolution is in full swing after the release of the all-new iX3 and i3, and while it may not be possible to shift all of the brand’s models to this completely fresh architecture, existing models are also getting a taste of the action with significant updates planned across the board.

The first to break cover is the brand’s flagship: the 2026 BMW 7 Series broke cover in New York this week, flaunting a significant facelift and an infusion of ‘Neue Klasse’ technologies.

Although BMW is referring to this as the most extensive model update it has ever carried out, it is essentially a facelift of the current G70 model. That said, you’re unlikely to mistake it for the current version, thanks to significant exterior design revisions.

Gone is the previous split headlight design arrangement, with new adaptive LED main units now integrated with the upper DRLs, while the illuminated split kidney grille boasts narrower proportions and the bumper features cleaner, more structured air intakes.

A completely new taillight structure, with longer, more continuous light elements across the rear end, rounds off the external changes, along with newly designed 20- to 22-inch wheel designs.

The cabin has been completely reworked, welcoming BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive system, complete with a new passenger screen. The system is powered by BMW’s new Operating System X (not designed by Elon Musk), which features powerful new software and an electronic architecture with built-in future-proof functionality.
