BMW 7-Series Protection
BMW unveiled a new generation of protection vehicles in the luxury sedan segment. The two models developed on the basis of the new BMW 7-Series succeed in blending an unrivalled protection concept with outstanding levels of ride comfort and spaciousness, exceptionally advanced equipment features and the class-beating dynamic prowess for which the brand is renowned. As the world's first ever protection sedan with an all-electric drive system, the BMW i7 Protection is a genuine trailblazer. Driven by two powerful electric motors, it meets all the requirements of class VR9 protection without any limitations, as does the new combustion-engine BMW 7-Series Protection.
The integrated security concept of the new BMW i7 Protection and BMW 7-Series Protection was factored into the development of the new BMW 7-Series range. It centres around the new BMW Protection Core, which is unique worldwide and comprises the model-specific self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody and roof and armoured glass. Both models will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in an elaborate "craft manufacturing" process. The two protection vehicles are set to make their public debut at the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show in Munich, with deliveries to customers requiring special protection commencing in December 2023.
The new protection models offer customised protection from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. They have been classified as offering class VR9 protection based on the internationally recognised official test criteria of Germany's Vereinigung der Prüfstellen für Angriffshemmende Materialien und Konstruktionen (Association of Test Laboratories for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions - VPAM, for short). The certification is based, among other things, on the third edition of the guidelines for Bullet Resistant Vehicles (VPAM BRV) with regard to ballistic resistance and the guidelines for Explosive Resistant Vehicles (VPAM ERV, third edition) and PAS 300 with regard to blast resistance. The glass for the two models even protects against fire from calibre 7.62x54 R ammunition - a threat from the highest civilian resistance class VPAM 10. A partial protection extension is also available as an option for the new BMW 7-Series Protection in defined bodywork areas against fire from VPAM 10 ammunition.

South Africa’s 2024 Car of the Year is...
The BMW 7 Series is South Africa’s 2024 Car of the Year winner.
The ultra-luxury sedan, which is also available in an electric variant called the i7, is the seventh BMW product to win the coveted prize in the 38 year history of the competition.
SA Car of the Year is judged by 27 jurors, selected by the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ), which stages the competition under the sponsorship of Old Mutual Insure.
Second overall was the Suzuki Fronx, while the BMW M2 took third place.
The SAGMJ also announced eight category winners at an event held in Sandton on Wednesday night.
The BMW 7 Series is South Africa’s 2024 Car of the Year winner.

Larte Design unveils its new bodykit for the already rather dramatic 7 Series
German tuner Larte Design has decided that the, let's say 'uniquely' styled BMW 7 Series is a little too restrained. Not exactly the conclusion we reached after seeing the latest 7 Series for the first time.
Then again, it’s quite clear this 'Performance Kit' for the V8-engined BMW 760i isn’t for us, because Larte Design explicitly states that it’s for “successful, confident individuals who want to stand out from the crowd”. Yep, that rules us out.
As you can probably tell from the images above, the kit includes a front lip spoiler, new side skirts and a fresh rear diffuser, with all three getting their own little aero flicks and folds. That full carbon diffuser certainly stands out from the crowd, helped by the two additional vertical brake lights.
There’s a fairly neat rear spoiler back there too that’s made from carbon, and up front the new bonnet is also made from the woven stuff. To prove to the world that you truly are a confident individual, you also get new lightweight mirror caps and aero-spec inserts on the wheels.

BMW 740i road test: the flagship sedan redefining luxury and outshining SUVs
Consumption
Being that big and heavy, you’d expect a massive fuel bill, but it came in under BMW’s claimed 7.9l/100km with consumption figures of 6.8l/100km on the way there and 7.3l/100km back to Pretoria.
You’d probably get close to 9l/100km with a combined cycle but I’ll settle for that any day.
The BMW 740i isn’t a bulk seller, and more’s the pity, but it’s heartening to see that the company still considers it to be their flagship, and if I had R2 359 104 and was shopping around, I’d scratch every SUV off my list.
