The first teaser image is out of Mazda's new SUV flagship.

New 2022 Mazda CX-60: 300bhp PHEV coming on 8 March

Mazda's new SUV flagship will kick off a European PHEV offensive

Mazda's all-new CX60 SUV will be the first of two models from the firm's 'Large Product Group' due on sale in Europe by 2024.

Officially previewed in the run up to its unveiling on 8 March, the CX-60 will be the first plug-in hybrid Mazda has launched. It will be followed by a larger CX-80 – which will add a third row of seats – and the new range-extender version of the MX-30 EV, which will use a small rotary petrol engine as a power generator.

Official details of the CX-60 remain thin on the ground, but Mazda has confirmed it will pair a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined power output of more than 296bhp.

What is unclear is whether that 2.5-litre engine will be Mazda's own Skyactiv unit, as deployed in the CX-5, or the 173bhp engine from technical partner Toyota.

This latter is paired with a pair of electric motors – one with 180bhp on the front axle and another with 54bhp at the rear – for a total output of 302bhp, which tallies with Mazda's 296bhp-plus claim.

Mazda is about to introduce the first European-market vehicle to emerge from this partnership: the Toyota Yaris-based 2 Hybrid, which will be sold alongside the existing 2 for the foreseeable future.

The CX-60 PHEV "demonstrates Mazda’s commitment to a multi-solution approach to sustainable mobility and the principal of the right solution at the right time", the company said.

It added that the powertrain will offer "smooth, efficient and powerful acceleration giving the driver greater confidence and driving enjoyment in the widest possible range of driving scenarios".

It will sit above the CX-5 and is expected to command a premium as a result, priced from around the £35,000 mark, when it hits dealerships later this year.

The Mazda CX-60 PHEV will produce ‘over 300hp’

New flagship CX-60 SUV will be Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid, comes with much power

This isn’t Mazda’s first plug-in car: strangely the Japanese firm bucked the trend by going fully electric with the MX-30 before considering a charging socket and a fuel filler cap.

But that’s about to change with the arrival of the CX-60 PHEV, described as the brand’s new ‘flagship’ SUV and due to be launched on 8 March.

According to Mazda it’ll run a 2.5-litre, straight-four petrol engine in conjunction with a single electric motor. The result? More than 300hp, which - just to be pedantic - means at least 296bhp.

That’s about it on the details front. Mazda says the CX-60 will be the first of two new cars being added to its ‘Large Product Group’ over the next couple of years, the other newbie being the CX-80 SUV.

The latter will get a third row of seats, putting it in the same league as the Volvo XC90, Kia Sorento, Peugeot 5008, Skoda Kodiaq and Seat Tarraco, to name but a few.

Mazda CX-60 premium SUV teased ahead of March debut

It seems Mazda is no longer in the mood to compete with regular mainstream brands and from this year the Japanese carmaker will unleash a full range of premium models based around a new rear-wheel drive architecture.

The first of these contenders, the Mazda CX-60, is set to be revealed on 8 March and to give us a taste of what to expect, the UK division has released a brief video previewing the new SUV contender.

Although not much information was released in the post, it has confirmed that the CX-60 will be available as a plug-in hybrid, in which an electric motor pairs with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine for a system output of over 223kW.

The new rear-wheel drive platform will eventually spawn four SUV products, namely CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90, and all of them are currently under consideration for South African introduction.

The CX-60, which comes with two-row seating, and the larger three-row CX-80 will both come with a ‘normal’ body width that’s suitable for markets such as Europe. The CX-70 (two-row) and CX-90 (three-row) will have a wider body that’s more suited to markets such as the US where buyers want a larger product with ‘big presence’.

New 2022 Mazda CX-60: 300bhp PHEV spotted ahead of debut

Mazda's new SUV flagship will begin a European PHEV offensive when it's revealed on 8 March

Mazda's all-new CX60 SUV will be the first of two models from its Large Product Group, due on sale in Europe by 2024.

Spotted out on the road in the run-up to its unveiling on 8 March, the CX-60 will be the first plug-in hybrid that Mazda has launched. Despite the camouflage, its relationship to the CX-5 is clear from similar design treatments at the front and rear, though the bonnet appears to be notably longer, and the quad-exit exhaust hints at its enhanced performance potential.

It will be followed by a larger CX-80 – which will add a third row of seats – and the new range-extender version of the MX-30 EV, which will use a small rotary petrol engine as a power generator.

Official details of the CX-60 remain thin on the ground, but Mazda has confirmed that it will pair a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined power output of more than 296bhp.

New 2022 Mazda CX-60: 300bhp PHEV interior previewed

Mazda's new SUV flagship will have an interior inspired by the ideas of Kaichō, with several premium materials

The interior of the Mazda CX-60 has been previewed by the Japanese firm ahead of the SUV's full unveiling on 8 March.

The preview image shows the CX-60’s dashboard centrepiece with soft fabrics. Mazda claims the model’s interior will be a “totally new experience” for both drivers and passengers.

Mazda also suggests the interior will be inspired by the ideas of Kaichō, which it describes as “the harmony which comes from mixing different materials and textures”.

New 2022 Mazda CX-60: front end of 300bhp PHEV previewed

New SUV flagship will have a minimalist exterior inspired by 'Ma,' which emphasises the “calm and beauty of empty space"

Mazda is readying for the reveal of its CX-60 on Monday 8 March by releasing an image previewing the exterior of the mid-sized SUV.

The new image shows the Mazda CX60 hidden behind traditional Japanese architecture, with the front end of the car slightly obscured.

Mazda says the design of the CX-60 continues the theme of Japanese principles and the company’s ‘Kodo’ philosophy, as seen throughout other recently-revealed aspects of the car.

New 2022 Mazda CX-60 brings RWD and straight-six power

New flagship SUV combines distinct dynamic focus with Mazda's first plug-in hybrid powertrain

The new Mazda CX-60 is the Japanese firm's crucial new range-topping SUV, representing a step change in terms of design philosophy, positioning and – most importantly – electrification.

Arriving to top the brand’s European line-up, it brings Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain, pairing a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine with an EV motor in the new eight-speed wet-clutch gearbox to produce a combined 323bhp and 369lb ft, making this the brand’s most powerful road car yet. Meanwhile, a 17.8kWh battery supplies an engine-off driving range of 37 miles. All these figures stack up favourably against PHEV rivals at a similar price point, namely the Volvo XC60 Recharge and BMW X3 xDrive40e.

The CX-60 PHEV's powertrain – entirely unrelated to the one seen in strategic partner Toyota's RAV4 PHEV – is expected to get it from 0-62mph in 5.8sec and emit just 33g/km of CO2 on the WLTP combined cycle.

While the hybrid is expected to take two-thirds of European sales, a pair of 48V mild-hybrid six-cylinder engine options – hence a bonnet that's noticeably longer than on the four-pot Mazda CX-5 – will be added to the line-up later on: a 3.3-litre diesel in 2022 and a 3.0-litre petrol in 2023, which uses Mazda’s SPCCI compression-ignition technology for improved efficiency. The company has yet to give power or performance details for these new motors.

New Mazda CX-60 SUV: most powerful ever Mazda road car gets 322bhp

Prices start from just under £44k for Mazda’s big new SUV

Nope, not any number of RX-7s or even the RX-8, but this. This is the most powerful Mazda road car ever produced. It is the all-new Mazda CX-60 PHEV, a full size, five-seat, plug-in hybrid SUV.

Underneath those admittedly handsome flanks sits a 2.5-litre four-cylinder ‘Skyactiv-G’ petrol engine, which is mated to a 100kW electric motor and a 17.8kWh battery. There's an eight-speed automatic gearbox that does without a torque converter too, and there's really very decent pace indeed for something weighing a couple of tonnes.

Mazda reckons on 0-62mph in 5.8secs and a (limited) top whack of 124mph thanks to system totals of 322bhp and 369lb ft of torque. This PHEV comes with the company’s ‘i-Activ’ AWD setup (mechanically it’s a front-engine, rear-drive layout). On the other end of the scale, there’s a claimed 188mpg (sure, why not?) and CO2 emissions of 33g/km.

Running on electricity alone, Mazda reckons on 39 miles at up to 62mph before petrol power kicks in, and a few miles more if you’re pottering around in the city (42 miles).

Other powertrains are due to follow: a pair of straight-six units, one a 3.0-litre ‘e-Skyactiv-X’ naturally-aspirated petrol, the other a 3.3-litre diesel sixer that’s said to weigh as much as a four-pot. Both get 48V mild-hybrid assistance for better efficiency, too, and both are available with rear-drive as well. That's right, a straight-six, rear-drive SUV.

Mazda CX-60 revealed as first premium SUV on new rear-wheel drive platform

Mazda’s premium market offensive has officially kicked off with the reveal of the new CX-60 mid-size SUV.

The Mazda CX-60 is the first of a series of vehicles that will be built around a new rear-wheel drive architecture that aims to propel the Japanese brand, once known for bargain-basement hatchbacks, into a more premium space.

The newcomer also features Mazda’s first plug-in powertrain, which will pair a 2.5-litre petrol engine with a 100kW electric motor to allow system outputs of 241kW and 500Nm, and a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.8 seconds.

Thanks to a 17.8 kWh battery, the PHEV model is also capable of covering 62km on electric power alone, according to claims.

Mazda hasn’t mentioned any other engine options for the initial range, but what we find particularly interesting are the 3.0-litre petrol and 3.3-litre diesel straight-six mild hybrid engines which Mazda says it will launch in the CX-60 at a later date.

Mazda upsizes with CX-60 SUV

Mazda has unveiled its CX-60, which is based on an all-new rear- and all-wheel-drive platform and features plug-in hybrid and inline 6-cylinder petrol and diesel powertrains. The spacious five-seater slots above the CX-5 and can be regarded as a rival to lower-end Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sportage derivatives.

Since the introduction of the CX-30 – Mazda’s boutique crossover offering that sits above the CX-3 compact family car, the market has anticipated a barrage of new CX-prefixed crossover and SUV models from the Hiroshima-based car company. Although the recently unveiled CX-50 is unfortunately reserved for North America, the CX-60, which is based on Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable (Large Vehicle) Architecture, is a different story – it could well be offered in South Africa in the near future, where it might sit above the long-serving CX-5 medium SUV, well, at least initially the latter is replaced.

The 5-seater, upper mid-sized CX-60 is slightly larger than the CX-50 and notably longer and wider than the current CX-5. It utilises Mazda’s new rear- and all-wheel drive Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture and rides on a 2 870 mm wheelbase. The model is 4 745 mm long, 1890 mm wide, and stands 1 680 mm tall, which leads us to believe it may be classed as an… executive SUV, maybe?

The CX-60’s eye-catching exterior appearance is characterised by several cues from Mazda’s Kodo design language, such as a bold grille with chrome wings that flare out to meet almost nugget-like LED headlamps (with L-shaped daytime running lights). Apart from sporting chunkier, more masculine detailing than most of its contemporary stablemates, the model’s extended dimensions make it look more slab-sided and upright in stance than the Mazda family cars we’ve become accustomed to.

Production of the CX-60 will commence at the Hofu Plant No 2 in the Yamaguchi prefecture this week and the Japanese-spec model will be introduced early next month. Could the newcomer be a welcome addition to the local market? Mazda South Africa has not yet confirmed whether the new model will be coming to Mzansi, but if our latest information is correct, it’s not on the cards for 2022.

The Mazda CX-60 Is The Shape Of Mazdas To Come

The plug-in hybrid SUV makes 323 horsepower and is the first on the automaker's new platform.

Mazda debuted its new CX-60 on Tuesday, a car meant for Europe’s burgeoning, almost American-like appetite for big SUVs, and a car that previews what we will likely get here in the States, the CX-70. The CX-60 is a big and slightly boring plug-in hybrid electric car, which is to say that it is a modern car. It is also Mazda’s first PHEV.

The Europe-only CX-60 combines a 100 kW electric motor with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder to produce up to 42 miles of electric-only range in the city, and 39 miles of electric-only range on the highway, provided you’re traveling at 62 mph or slower, according to Mazda. Mazda also says it can go from zero to 62 mph in “just” 5.8 seconds, which is slow. In the United Kingdom, the CX-60 will start at £43,950, or around $57,583, which is expensive no matter where you are for a Mazda.

That seems in part because the CX-60 is part of Mazda’s push into SUVs, but also Mazda’s never-ending push toward premium. Take, for example, all of this stuff:
