WHAT'S THE VERDICT?
“Has the hallmarks of being another likeable Mazda thanks to its well-appointed cabin, but the handling isn’t quite in the same league as Germany’s finest”
The Mazda CX-60 has the hallmarks of being another likeable Mazda, thanks to its very well-appointed and logical cabin, a huge amount of standard kit and reasonable driving dynamics. But while the plug-in hybrid delivers an undeniable turn of speed, it’s a shame the powertrain isn’t more sorted and the handling not quite on par with premium rivals like the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC and Audi Q5. Still, if you can accept it for what it is - an adept family car with the potential to slash fuel bills - then there’s precious little wrong with it. It’s cheaper than Germany’s finest too, and arguably much better value.

The Mazda CX-60 has the hallmarks of being another likeable Mazda, thanks to its very well-appointed and logical cabin, a huge amount of standard kit and reasonable driving dynamics. But while the plug-in hybrid delivers an undeniable turn of speed, it’s a shame the powertrain isn’t more sorted and the handling not quite on par with premium rivals like the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC and Audi Q5. Still, if you can accept it for what it is - an adept family car with the potential to slash fuel bills - then there’s precious little wrong with it. It’s cheaper than Germany’s finest too, and arguably much better value.

In so many ways, Mazda still clearly has a bit to learn about making really convincing, premium-level passenger cars. But in one respect in particular - a 3.3-litre six-pot diesel engine that feels ideal for towing and long-distance driving, and can return 50mpg easily and 65mpg if you try a bit - it’s now got a selling point that plenty of us, especially those of us who don't pay benefit-in-kind tax, and who aren't in a position to regularly charge an electrified alternative, could surely find a use for.

Mazda Southern Africa hasn’t launched an all-new passenger vehicle for quite some time, but that’s about to change. Yes, the fresh-faced Mazda CX-60 is scheduled to roll onto local dealership floors in May 2023 and we’ve managed to unearth initial details, including pricing.
Revealed in March 2022, the CX-60 is the first of Mazda’s so-called “Large Product” group models and as such rides on the Japanese firm’s new rear-wheel-drive platform. The 5-seater SUV measures 4 745 mm long, 1890 mm wide and stands 1 680 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 870 mm.
What are the engine options for the new Mazda CX-60?
In Europe, the CX-60 is offered with a range of interesting engines, including a pair of mild-hybrid inline 6-cylinder units – a naturally aspirated 3.0-litre petrol lump and a 3.3-litre turbodiesel motor – as well as a 241 kW plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain based around the familiar 2.5-litre powerplant.
While the latter flagship set-up results in the most powerful road-legal car in Mazda’s history, we sadly won’t see it in South Africa … at launch, at least. Furthermore, the straight-6 engines – including new 209 kW turbocharged 3.3-litre petrol unit announced for Australia – won’t form part of Mazda SA’s launch line-up, either.
