Mazda confirms South African model plans for 2024, including a V6 diesel

Internationally the Mazda brand is moving upstream and that is starting to reflect on the local market, with some exciting new entrants planned for the next year.

For starters, Mazda South Africa will be welcoming the new CX-60 Takumi in the first quarter, which will give the sports SUV line-up a huge boost with the introduction of a V6 turbodiesel engine.

Mazda is also aiming to introduce the upcoming CX-80 in South Africa, which should take the form of a larger seven-seat SUV similar in concept to the CX-90, but with a narrower width for markets such as Europe.

While the local importer is hoping to introduce the CX-80 in 2024, this very much depends on international stock availability, which could push the local launch to early 2025.

At the lower end of the SUV scale, Mazda South Africa is also planning upgrades for the CX-3 and CX-5. These are likely to take place during the second half of 2024.

Pricing: Mazda CX-60 3.3 V6 diesel breaches the million rand mark

The Mazda CX-60, introduced to South Africa last year, is out the prove that the Japanese brand is serious about moving upmarket.

Built on a new rear-wheel drive biassed platform for premium vehicles and featuring a luxurious cabin, the new midsize SUV has made Mazda’s upscale ambitions clear in all but one area.

The only engine on offer at launch was a normally aspirated 2.5-litre petrol unit offering 141kW and 261Nm. But it will soon be joined by an all-new 3.3-litre V6 turbodiesel model badged as the Takumi.

It’s due to go on sale at the beginning of March 2024, but Mazda has already listed a price tag of R1,049,200 for the new V6 model on its local website, as first spotted by Citizen Motoring.

This makes it the most expensive Mazda ever to go on sale in Mzansi, and the first to breach the million rand mark. It also represents a R205,300 premium over the next-most expensive CX-60, the 2.5L Individual AWD, which is listed at R844,500. The range kicks off at R739,800 for the 2.5L Dynamic RWD.

Mazda Southern Africa’s latest pricelist includes the new CX-60 3.3 DE Takumi and shows that it will cost you a cool R1 049 200 at launch (though the eagle-eyed folks over at duoporta.com were the first to uncover the news). That makes the mild-hybrid straight-6 variant a considerable R204 700 more expensive than the 4-cylinder CX-60 2.5 Individual and thus easily Mazda SA’s priciest derivative yet.

The 3.3-litre inline-6 turbodiesel motor is equipped with 48V mild-hybrid technology and generates peak system outputs of 187 kW and 550 Nm. Drive is directed to all 4 corners via an 8-speed automatic transmission, facilitating a 0-100 kph sprint in a claimed 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 219 kph. The claimed combined fuel economy, meanwhile, is listed as a mere 4.9 L/100 km (with corresponding CO2 emissions of 123 g/km).

The mild-hybrid system includes a 0.33 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 12.4 kW/153 Nm electric motor-generator, with the latter integrated into the automatic transmission. The electric motor supports the oil-burning engine at low loads and low engine speeds, while its battery is recharged by the engine as well as via regenerative braking.

Summary

I know it may seem that I’m reciting all the flowery prose that Mazda would like me to, but the fact is that this particular CX-60 derivative, powered by a characterful and muscular 3.3-litre inline-6 turbodiesel motor, is a sensory joy to drive. Then again, at this price (R 1 049 200, March 2024) it really needs to be.

There aren’t many rivals at this price point unless you’re looking at the Teutonic trio. The Audi Q5, BMW X3 and even Mercedes-Benz GLC all live here, while the Mazda’s most obvious rival – the Volkswagen Tiguan in R-Line trim – can be had for R845 800, albeit with a smaller 2.0-litre turbodiesel with 130 kW.

But bear in mind that we live in the time of a R1-million Honda CR-V and some Chinese SUVs command prices north of R800k, so perhaps the price of the 3.3D AWD Takumi won’t put you off in the slightest.

And, if that’s the case, and you’re interested in the prospect of owning one of the more exciting cars from the marque with a compelling inline-6-cylinder driving experience, then good for you.
