2022 Renault Megane E-Tech Electric

THE BIG ELECTRIC CAR TEST: RENAULT MEGANE E-TECH VS VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 VS MG4 EV

Looking to go electric? There’s never been such choice on offer, especially if you’re in the market for a family hatchback

Time to wrap up. We really want to like the Volkswagen. It’s refined and its dynamics are nicely relaxed, a reflection of the way most people drive in these efficiency obsessed, camera surveilled days – whether propelled by petroleum or electrons. One good facelift to improve the cabin trim and HMI would transform the thing. But for the moment there’s too much unfinished business in this car.

The MG has a good and efficient platform, and its dynamics have a bit of a sense of humour. But it does have a few rough edges in the cabin and a want of refinement on the move. So, yeah, there’s physical cost saving here; it’s not just about the wages of the people who build it.

The Renault is the best looking, has by far the nicest cabin, the best OS, and a properly sophisticated way of going down the road. It comes across as a much more expensive car than the MG. And of course it is. But tellingly it comes across as more expensive than the VW. And it isn’t. So it wins.

Renault Megane E-Tech EV60 review

Verdict

The Megane E-Tech is a great small electric crossover. It has all the modern technology, including great driver assistance. The introduction of Android-based infotainment is welcomed dearly. The choice of materials inside is great and the usage of dials and switches is simple and intuitive. On the road, the car feels planted and reassuring.

Overall, the Megane E-Tech is a pretty change in the world of crossovers. It offers just enough flare to be different, but not as much to interfere with your life in any way. Naturally, it has some flaws, but nothing major to be worried about. The exterior and interior designs can easily win the hearts of buyers, while the long range will ensure lots of great moments inside the Megane E-Tech.

Renault Megane E-Tech now £34,995 as prices slashed

Electric hatchback now cheaper across the board; range-topper comes under the £40,000 mark

Pricing for the Renault Megane E-Tech has been cut across the board, meaning the electric car now starts from £34,495.

That is a reduction of £2500 on the previous entry point of £36,995, but discounts on the higher trim levels are even greater.

The middle-rung Techno+ trim is now priced from £36,495 (£3000 cheaper) and the range-topping Iconic model is now £38,495 (£3500 less).

The changes mean the Megane now undercuts key mid-sized rivals including the Kia Niro EV (£37,295) and Volkswagen ID 3 (£37,225).

However, the value-champion MG 4 remains significantly less costly, starting at £26,995.

My Megane is turning 6 next year. Would love to trade it in for one of these. It's a shame we don't get them here.
