Volvo to upgrade existing EX90s to more powerful ES90 computer
Complimentary upgrade is said to boost the EX90's computing power eightfold
Customers of early versions of the new Volvo EX90 will be offered a complimentary hardware upgrade to give it the more powerful computing system from the new ES90.
The new ES90 gets two Nvidia Drive AGX Orin processors to run the car’s hardware and software, whereas the EX90 has one Orin processor alongside an older Nvidia Xavier chip. Volvo will be addressing this on EX90s that have already been delivered by retrofitting the dual Orin system, which will boost the car’s computing power eightfold.
The first EX90s were delivered to UK customers last week, but plans for how and when the upgrade rollout will take place have still to be finalised. The Polestar 3, which shares its SPA2 underpinnings with the EX90, will also be subject to similar upgrades, as announced recently by Polestar.
Engineering boss Anders Bell called it a “unique” situation where Volvo is able do the retrofit hardware update because relatively few models have made it to market with that system. He said that rather than have to develop parallel software systems that would have to be rolled out across different hardware platforms, it is easier to replace the hardware of the cars already out there.
Volvo software boss Alwin Bakkenes said this will unlock more features in the future for early EX90 owners and has the dual benefit of Volvo being able to manage software updates across more models more easily. The goal is to launch four consumer-facing software updates each year that add more functionality or make improvements, but updates are being fed to the factory and development cars all the time.
A key function to be added off the back of early EX90s’ hardware shift will be more capability for the lidar sensor, which will gain the ability to steer away from pedestrians and cyclists on the side of the road in the dark. Bakkenes said this is a “remarkably frequent use case” and will help “save a lot of lives”.
While the computing system of early EX90s will be upgraded, the electronic architecture of these early models will remain at 400V. The ES90 gets a more powerful 800V system. New-build EX90s will switch over to an 800V architecture, too, but the precise date for this to happen to coincide with customer deliveries has yet to be determined. CEO Jim Rowan said this is likely coincide with a model-year change.

Volvo just announced the ES90 sedan, and it uses an 800V architecture, which enables faster DC charging than the EX90's 400V one. But not for long.
The company is planning on upgrading the EX90 with the 800V architecture to bring it on par with the ES90. This upgrade will come "in one of the model-year changes" in the future, according to Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan. If you're wondering just when, it won't be very soon as "it's a pretty new car", Rowan says. So in a year or two, most likely.
In some markets like the UK, the first EX90 models are just now being delivered to customers, despite the fact that the EV was announced back in 2022. The EX90 will also get "an imminent hardware upgrade" to install the Nvidia Drive AGC Orin platform found in the ES90. Unlike the architecture switch, this won't require you to buy a new EX90, it will be a retrofit. And free.

Volvo EX90 named finalist for 2025 World Luxury Car of the Year
The Volvo EX90, the brand’s range-topping seven-seater SUV, has been announced as a finalist in the 2025 World Luxury Car of the Year award. The prestigious all-electric EX90, due in South Africa in Q2, is one of three finalists competing for the accolade. In addition to being shortlisted for this award, the EX90 was also a finalist in the 2025 World Electric Vehicle category, further underscoring its excellence in the EV space.
According to the rules, vehicles eligible for the award must be priced at the luxury car level in their primary markets and available in two major markets (Europe, China, USA, Japan, India, Korea, Latin America) “on at least two separate continents within the period January 2024 and March 30, 2025.” Additionally, at least 5,000 units must be produced annually.
“As we prepare to launch the EX90 in South Africa, we are just thrilled to see our most advanced vehicle yet being announced as a finalist in the 2025 World Luxury Car of the Year award,” said Felipe Yagi, Head of Marketing & Communications at Volvo Car South Africa.
“Since its global unveiling, the EX90 has been the recipient of several awards, and like the smaller EX30, we expect it to be a hit with the local buying public when it reaches dealerships.

DRIVEN: Volvo EX90 impresses with its luxury, tech and refinement, but it's pricey
The Volvo EX90 has landed in South Africa, and it packs some impressive technology. But is it worth the money? We attended the local launch in Stellenbosch to find out.
It's not every day that Volvo launches a new flagship SUV, and in all fairness the EX90 is a lot more than just 'new'.
Heralding the company's SPA2 platform for electric vehicles, it takes the company's battery-powered ambitions to the luxury SUV space, while introducing a new electronic architecture. The EX90 is essentially a super-computer on wheels.
But it doesn't replace the XC90 just yet, with the former flagship gaining an imminent facelift as it prepares to soldier on in hybrid form.
The all-electric EX90 is a more upmarket proposition, with a steep price tag of R2.65 million, and Volvo readily admits that this is a halo product rather than a volume seller.
That deep dig into your well-lined pockets buys a full-house product though, complete with the flagship Twin Power Performance powertrain and enough features to sink a cruise ship. Which the EX90 is, to a degree, tipping the scales at over 2.8 tonnes.
It's surprisingly brisk, considering its bulk, as local media found out on a short 20km route in the vicinity of the launch venue near Stellenbosch this week.
Its twin electric motors, one on each axle, conspire to produce 380kW and 910Nm, which is enough to haul it from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds, according to claims.
Power delivery is incredibly smooth, and as a result this vehicle is deceptively fast. It doesn't push you back in your chair like its smaller pocket rocket of a sibling, the EX30, but it has impressive thrust nonetheless and overtakes slower vehicles like a hungry cheetah.
