Mazda's new full-size SUV/

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Is a Big, Beautiful SUV Built Like a Sport Sedan

It's got a longitudinal engine, rear-biased all-wheel drive, and an available turbo straight-six making 340 hp. Tell me that doesn't sound like a sport sedan.

Mazda has had upscale aspirations for a while now. Redesigns of the CX-5 and Mazda3 show the brand’s know-how — both are great vehicles to drive, with interiors that are surprisingly classy. Those up-market moves continue with the all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90 you see here.

It seems like we’ve been speculating and getting teased about the new CX-90 for a while now. But we finally get to see the all-new crossover and a few of its details. In keeping with the brand’s Zoom Zoom heritage, Mazda designed an all-new platform for the CX-90 with a longitudinal engine and a rear-biased all-wheel drive layout. While you might think that could compromise the interior of what’s supposed to be a full-size vehicle, it didn’t. Mazda was able to get three rows in the CX-90, enough for eight-passenger seating, thanks to the platform allowing for a nice long wheelbase.

Outside, the design is familiar yet different. There are obvious similarities to the not-for-the-U.S. CX-60. Mazda took its time with the exterior it seems. There’s chrome and curves where you wouldn’t expect them to be. Like the front facia with its chrome grille surround, or the curved taillights that almost come together at the center of the tailgate. Mazda designers say the curves of the body create changing expressions, meant to purposely reflect light and shadows so the car’s look changes throughout the day.

Mazda CX-90

Mazda North American Operations introduced the first-ever 2024 Mazda CX-90. Built on Mazda's all-new large platform, the three-row crossover represents the company's new flagship vehicle with wider, longer, and more aggressive proportions that perfectly blend its high-performance appearance with world-class refinement. Mazda CX-90 is available with all-new electrified powertrains, including an inline 6 turbo and a plug-in hybrid, that offer drivers enhanced performance and efficiency.

"At Mazda, our focus is to deliver an ownership experience that enriches the lives of our customers. With each new vehicle launch, we challenge ourselves to progress through our human-centric approach of design and engineering," said Jeff Guyton, President and CEO of Mazda North American Operations. "CX-90 offers powerful and responsive performance, alluring design, and intuitive technology. We're very proud of our team's work on CX-90, which we know is a breakthrough vehicle in its segment."

As with all Mazda vehicles, CX-90 is designed with the driver in mind. With seating for up to eight passengers, CX-90 can accommodate families and friends in all three rows. Cabin space, cargo capacity, safety features, and many amenities are optimized for their needs.

POWERFUL, RESPONSIVE PERFORMANCE

Mazda CX-90 is built on an all-new large platform that features a front-engine, rear-wheel-bias longitudinal layout to elevate Mazda's signature driving performance. CX-90 is equipped with Kinematic Posture Control, which first debuted on the MX-5 Miata, a software feature that suppresses body lift on tight corners to enhance the grip and allows all occupants to maintain a natural posture. Focus was put toward optimizing rigidity across the entire vehicle body, while meticulously designing the seats and suspension to provide better balance, control, and confidence in a range of driving situations. With these thoughtful developments, along with standard i-Activ all-wheel drive, drivers can enjoy the full potential of the available high-output powertrains.

Mazda CX-90 revealed as large-and-in-charge flagship SUV with V6 diesel power

It’s no secret that Mazda is swimming upstream with its new rear-biased all-wheel drive architecture that will underpin a full range of luxury SUVs.

We’ve seen the new CX-60 and, now, the Japanese carmaker has pulled the covers off the pinnacle of its line-up, in terms of size and price. Meet the Mazda CX-90.

Primarily created for markets such as the US, the CX-90 is a seven-seat wide-bodied model, and it isn’t on the radar for South Africa. However, we do have it on good authority that the CX-60 is under consideration for our market and, if it gets the go-ahead, will probably arrive this year.

In addition to the new architecture for the new Mazda CX-90 are straight-six engines. In most markets, Mazda will be offering a 3.3-litre six-cylinder mild hybrid turbopetrol that offers 254kW and 500Nm.

Some markets, including Australia, will also receive a 3.3-litre turbodiesel that pounds out 187kW and 550Nm.

Both powertrains are paired with a new eight-speed automatic gearbox and i-Activ all-wheel drive system. While its size will work against its agility, Mazda is attempting to mitigate this to a degree, with features like Kinematic Posture Control. Originally developed for the MX-5, the system aims to suppress body lift on tight corners to enhance the grip and allow occupants to maintain their natural posture in the vehicle.

Massive Mazda SUV arrives in America with plug-in hybrid or straight-six power

Listen up Americans – your latest giant, three-row family SUV is here, and doesn’t it look good?

This is the all-new Mazda CX-90, built on the company’s all-new and inventively named ‘large platform’ and featuring seating for up to eight people. Although as you can see in the images above, you can also spec as few as six seats for maximum interior space.

Under that long, sweeping bonnet there’s a choice of two engines. The first is a 3.3-litre straight-six petrol that makes 335bhp and 369lb ft of torque (making it the most powerful mass-produced Mazda petrol engine ever, fact fans). That engine is paired with a mild-hybrid system that uses a small electric motor to smooth out gearchanges and drive the CX-90 at very low speeds.

However, if it’s more electricity you’re after then you’ll want the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that makes up the internal combustion half of a 319bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain. Said engine is paired with an electric motor and a 17.8kWh battery to get to that power figure, while both setups get a new eight-speed automatic gearbox.
