Mazda North American Operations announced the first-ever 2025 Mazda CX-70. Utilizing Mazda's most advanced powertrains that offer responsive and electrified performance, CX-70 provides intuitive handling that keeps the driver engaged and in control, whether driving around the city or engaging in lifestyle activities.
As expected of a Mazda vehicle, CX-70 is designed with drivers in mind, with an emphasis on superb driving dynamics, elegant yet sporty design cues, and a focus on generous cabin and cargo space to encourage owners to pursue their passions and hobbies.
Built on Mazda's large platform, CX-70 has been engineered from the outset with electrification in mind, with all CX-70 powertrains featuring some form of electrification. Customers can choose from an e-SkyActiv G 3.3L Inline 6 Turbo engine with M-Hybrid Boost, or an e-SkyActiv G PHEV, which provides customers with the best of both worlds in performance and efficiency.
Design is a clear point of pride with Mazda CX-70. The natural, athletic posture bestowed by the large platform is further enhanced with thoroughly modern and sporty touches. CX-70's aggressive appearance is immediately noticed with the wide and low front fascia and chiseled front end. Mazda further emphasized Mazda CX-70's dynamic look with contrasting black accents throughout the exterior, and available black metal and machine cut finished 21-inch wheels, giving the vehicle a great stance, even when parked.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 Is Literally Just A CX-90 With Only Two Rows Of Seats And A Different Name
Weeks after getting to check it out in person, we're still wondering why Mazda did this.
Back in 2021 Mazda announced plans to introduce three new crossovers in the U.S. — first came the CX-50, which rode on an existing platform, and then last year saw the debut of the CX-90, a large three-row replacement for the CX-9 that uses a new rear-drive platform with new inline-6 and plug-in-hybrid powertrains.
Mazda said the third model would be the two-row CX-70, and it would use the same platform and engines as the CX-90. We expected the CX-70 would be a unique vehicle, probably an Americanized, slightly larger version of the midsize CX-60 that’s sold in other markets, but it turns out the 2025 Mazda CX-70 is quite literally just a CX-90 with only two rows of seats.
OK, so the CX-70 has gloss-black exterior trim, different bumper designs with sportier-looking intakes and new wheels, but otherwise it is identical in size and design to the CX-90. I do think the CX-70's front end treatment is more appealing, and it remains a good-looking car overall, but the lack of overt differentiation is very strange.

The Mazda CX-70 is a US-spec SUV that looks remarkably similar to the CX-90
Mazda gives the CX-90 some new bumpers, takes out the third row of seats and hey presto, it’s an all-new car!
Mazda USA claims the SUV you see above is the “first-ever CX-70”. What it fails to mention is that it should really be referred to as “the second-ever CX-90, only with the third row of seats removed”.
Seriously, have a quick click on this link and refresh your memory of the CX-90, then come back here and look at the CX-70. Almost identical, aren’t they? Both cars are built on the same platform and get the same powertrain options too (more on that in a second), although the ‘new’ CX-70 does have ever-so-slightly sportier looking bumpers front and rear.
What else is different? Well, while the CX-90 can fit up to eight people in its three rows of seating, the CX-70 only gets two rows and a maximum of five people on board. That means you get a giant boot with plenty of neat little storage tricks to stop things rattling around. Electric folding rear seats too if you want to make this essentially a massive van at the touch of a button.
Inside there’s also a new red leather interior that Mazda says is inspired by the 100th Anniversary Special Edition MX-5, and Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant appears for the first time. All very exciting.

While the CX-70 starting price is $2,600 more than the CX-90, pricing for it is just off of or identical to pricing on some CX-90 trims.
Mazda recently introduced its all “new” CX-70. If you were hoping for something different, I’m sorry, but Mazda let you down; the CX-70 is nothing but a CX-90 with a third row. We now know how much it’ll cost, but that isn’t really a surprise either, because the CX-70 is close or identical to the CX-90 depending on the trim.
Including a $1,375 destination charge, the 2025 CX-70 will start at $41,820. This price is interesting for one big reason: Mazda is charging more for less. That starting price makes the CX-70 $2,600 more than the CX-90, which starts at $39,220.
That sameness to the CX-90 extends to the CX-70’s trim and powertrain lineup. The CX-70 can be had with the base turbocharged I6 with 280 horsepower, a version of the same engine equipped with a mild hybrid setup to produce 340 hp or the plug-in hybrid that pairs a 2.5-liter I4 with a 17.8 kWh battery pack for 323 total system hp. You can get this with rear or all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
