Mazda CX-80

The all-new Mazda CX-80 is a new flagship model for Mazda, created to challenge the established premium brands in the European market.

Mazda is committed to a multi-solution approach to sustainable mobility and the principal of the right solution at the right time. To that end, the company has developed three distinct product lines: a Small Product Group, based on its transverse layout Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture; a Large Product Group, featuring its longitudinal layout Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture; and its EV Models, underpinned by Mazda's Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture.

Following the launch of the CX-60, the all-new Mazda CX-80 is the second of two new models for Europe from the company's Large Product Group. Featuring three-row seating, it is the most spacious car in Mazda's European line-up.

Meet the new Mazda CX-80, the Japanese brand’s fresh-faced flagship SUV. From what we understand, this new 3-row contender – which will be offered in Europe in both 6- and 7-seater guise – has been pencilled in for South Africa, where it will slot in above the CX-60. We’ve asked Mazda Southern Africa to confirm and will update this story once we hear back.

While the CX-80 is clearly very closely related to the CX-60 (and rides on the same rear-wheel-drive-biased platform), its wheelbase is 250 mm longer, taking the space between its axles to a considerable 3 120 mm. This, of course, allows the CX-80 to adopt a 3rd row of seats.

If you liked the Mazda CX-60 but wished it was a little bigger, the new CX-80 is here to answer your prayers.

The newcomer will be Mazda’s flagship product in markets such as Europe and South Africa. Although local launch timing is not yet cast in stone, the company is hoping to launch it in late 2024 or early 2025, depending on availability of stock.

But doesn’t Mazda also have a CX-90 SUV? Good question. The CX-90, along with the five-seat CX-70, are wide-bodied products aimed at markets such as North America.

The CX-60 and CX-80 are similar in length to their American counterparts but are not as wide, largely to cater for the narrower streets in regions such as Europe.

Since we still have the tape measure out, it’s worth noting that the new CX-80 is a good 250mm longer than the CX-60, with all of that going into the wheelbase to procure a more spacious six- or seven-seat cabin, and it’s also 26mm taller. According to Mazda, head and shoulder room as well as hip point spacing and front to second row couple distance measurements have all increased versus the CX-60.
