2024 Porsche Macan EV to bring 603bhp and 100kWh battery

Jaguar I-Pace rival also gets rear steering, 270kW charging and highly focused chassis set-up

Porsche has confirmed technical details for the upcoming Porsche Macan EV, its critical first entry into the electric SUV segment.

Antoon Janssen, Porsche powertrain manager for the Macan line, told Autocar that it intends for the Macan EV – based on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) – to be the sportiest car in its class.

As such, it receives a pair of permanently excited electric motors – one per axle – similar to those used in the Porsche Taycan.

However, these have been heavily reworked to boost power density and efficiency, featuring a new ‘double V’ magnet arrangement and switching from a silicon semiconductor to silicon-carbide. The latter reduces switching losses – effectively power leakage – in the motors’ pulse inverters.

These improvements yield power outputs up to 603bhp, with more than 738lb ft of torque, delivered to all four wheels. The firm did not comment on whether an ‘overboost’ function – offered on the Taycan Turbo S to temporarily raise power and torque to 751bhp and 774lb ft – will also be available on the Macan EV.

Rear-wheel drive is also possible on the PPE platform, said Janssen, although this will initially only be used to decouple the front motor when cruising to reduce rolling resistance (and conserve energy).

Dynamics have also been a point of emphasis for the Macan EV. Model chassis manager Dominik Hartmann confirmed that it will have a ‘performance rear axle’, with the motor mounted as far back as possible. This gives a weight distribution of 48% at the front and 52% at the rear, to maximise traction. For reference, the Taycan’s mass is divided 49:51 front to rear.

The 2024 Porsche Macan Electric Will Offer Big Range and (Finally!) a Frunk

Porsche's next all-electric vehicle will be a dual-motor Macan crossover that could get more than 300 miles on a fully-charged battery.

It took four years for Porsche to go from the Mission E concept to the production version of the Taycan electric sport sedan. Now, three years after that car’s release, Porsche is giving us a peek at its next EV. It’ll be an SUV this time, the Macan Electric, and it’s less than two years away from full production. We got a sneak peek.

The Macan Electric (yes, that’s the official name) will be built on a new platform that Porsche is calling PPE: Premium Platform Electric. This setup, though broadly similar to the Taycan’s J1 platform, offers a number of minor but significant improvements. According to Porsche, these tweaks will mean more power, better handling, and greater range. And yes, just like with the Taycan, this new EV platform will be shared with Porsche’s corporate cousin Audi.

It all starts with a new battery pack, roughly 100 kWh worth, split over 12 modules. Porsche’s not confirming the exact pack size yet, but it’ll be slightly larger than the Taycan’s biggest, 93.4-kWh pack. Porsche says this size was chosen as it’s the right balance of range vs. performance. Interestingly, this pack lacks the so-called “foot garages” that allow the Taycan’s body to sit so low on its skateboard battery platform.

The PPE’s pack will be bolstered by the same 800-volt architecture found in the Taycan, enabling charging from 5 percent battery to 80 percent in just 25 minutes. When the electrons are flowing the other way, they’ll power a dual-motor setup with somewhere north of 600 horsepower and 740 lb-ft of torque. Under normal conditions, most of that power will be delivered through the rear wheels, so the Macan will roll on a staggered tire setup, wider at the back, with wheels measuring up to 22 inches in diameter.

That said, thanks to the duo of motors, torque will be infinitely variable front to rear, meaning the new Macan will put the power where it can best be used. At the rear, the Macan will be capable of side-to-side torque vectoring, at least on high-end performance trims of the Macan Electric. A clutch-type rear differential will handle duties there, while the front-axle will get a simpler open differential, using braking to contain wheelspin.

 
Electric Porsche Macan to come with 100kWh battery and 595hp motor

Electric Porsche Macan is facing delays due to software issues that the entire VW Group is currently struggling with. That means extra time for engineers to further improve on the upcoming electric SUV and according to Antoon Janssen, the powertrain manager responsible for the Macan development - this extra time has been well spent.

Porsche set a goal for the electric Macan - to be the sportiest SUV in its class. It’s not too difficult in all honesty, with the previous Macan having the best chassis in class and with Taycan being probably the most fun electric car to drive, the Macan EV has plenty of experience to draw on.

The car will be equipped with two, permanently excited electric motors similar to those used in the Taycan. They aren’t the same motors though, they have been completely re-engineered to offer higher power density and improved efficiency. Silicon semiconductors have been swapped for silicon-carbide based ones and a new magnet arrangement in a “double V” helps to increase the strength and the focus of the electro-magnetic field.

The improvements made to the motors result in a combined output of 595hp and 1,000Nm of torque (450kW and 738 lb-ft). That’s more torque than the Porsche Taycan GTS delivers. There is no word yet whether the “boost” function will be available, but if it will, it most likely be either part of a performance upgrade or higher vehicle trim.

The front motor can be completely disconnected from the drivetrain, this will be initially used to reduce rolling resistance at motorway speeds but can at some point offer a spirited rear-wheel drive or can form a base for an entry RWD only model.

 
Porsche confirms up to 600bhp for next-gen electric Macan

The next-gen Macan has left the building and is headed for the test track

The next Porsche Macan is getting some serious power. In a statement about its pathway to electromobility, the sports car brand said that the new Macan, which will be all-electric and ready to start testing, will be capable of producing up to 600bhp.

The new Macan will sport the 800-volt architecture seen in the Porsche Taycan. That set-up means the weight of the cables will be lower and the 100kWh battery will charge from 0-80 per cent in just 25 minutes. Capable of up to 270kW power delivery, that’s actually faster than the Taycan.

In fact, the Macan is getting some hella fancy charging tech. Porsche’s explanation of its technical wizardry around, what it calls, ‘bank charging’, is as clear as mud to the untrained eye. But essentially, the car will pre-condition the battery ready for charge and if the charger in question is only 400V, the car will know to adjust the corresponding switches so the 800V battery splits (virtually) into two smaller 400V batteries. Neat, huh?

Developed with Audi, the PPE - which stands for Premium Platform Electric and literally nothing to do with the hygiene-wear made trendy during the pandemic - is an all-electric platform offering an architecture that enables best use of space and configurable driving dynamics across a variety of models. The pure electric Macan is the first model to get PPE-ed, so to speak.

Porsche Macan EV shows off its charging curve in Norway

Another day and another sighting of the electric Porsche Macan. This time the test vehicle was spotted in the far north of snowy Norway, taking advantage of freezing temperatures and testing charging capabilities of the latest EV architecture from Porsche.

While we have seen the car many times before, and there are hardly any details left for Porsche to surprise us with, we get to see the Macan’s charging performance for the first time. Arguably, the charging speed and battery capacity are as important as the car’s performance on the road.

What possibly can we learn from just one photo? First of all, since this is a test vehicle, the battery has likely been depleted close to 10 % SoC or even below in order to check the battery performance. The test vehicles go through discharges a few times a day to cram as many real-life situations into the testing as possible.

With the freezing temperatures and low battery charge (most likely) we can see the battery is already at 52% and the charger delivered 44.15 kWh in just over 15 minutes. The charging speed is shown as 172 kW which is impressive considering both the ambient temperature and the SoC of over 50%.

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air is a £485k boat that you can have in any Porsche exterior colour

Porsche may not have pulled the wraps off its all-electric Macan just yet, but it did confirm earlier this year that it would use a 100kWh battery and motors that enabled ‘up to 600bhp’.

And it would seem that Porsche is fairly proud of the powertrain, because it has now had it transplanted into a boat. Yes you did read that correctly: this is the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air.

An all-electric take on the Austrian boatbuilder’s standard 850 Fantom Air, the special edition Porsche boat gets the full 100kWh battery from the upcoming Macan mounted under the ‘lounge area’ at the rear. The small SUV’s permanently excited synchronous electric motor is present and correct too, although here it’s limited to ‘just’ 536bhp. Sounds like plenty to us.

The result is a top speed of nearly 53mph on the water, with a cruising range of 28 miles at the optimum speed of 25mph. Porsche says there are Docking, Range, Sport and Sport Plus modes for the powertrain though and that a range of more than 62 miles is possible. It also says that “typical customer trips with a mix of slow and high-speed travel allow a journey time of two to three hours”.

 
Porsche Launches A $600,000 Electric Boat That Uses The Same Powertrain As The Macan EV

The electric boat has the same powertrain as the upcoming Macan EV.

Porsche is getting in on the boat business. The legendary German automaker has announced it has an all new boat coming and it’s not just any boat either: It’ll be electric and powered by the same powertrain as the all new Macan EV.

Porsche partnered with Austrian luxury boat maker Frauscher to build the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air. The boat is based on Frauscher’s 858 Fantom Air but the similarities end there. Porsche says the boat uses components from its all new Premium Platform Electric EV platform, shared by the upcoming Macan EV. This means a high voltage lithium ion battery and a permanently excited synchronous electric motor come together to give the 850 Fantom Air 500 kilowatts of power or 536 horsepower.

 
VW delays new Porsche Macan EV platform, cuts jobs as software struggles persist

The drama at Volkswagen’s Cariad unit continues. VW plans to cut around 2,000 jobs while delaying the (already delayed) new software architecture due to be used in upcoming Porsche and Audi EVs.

According to German news outlet Manager Magazin, the board of directors approved the plan at a meeting this week.

As reported, the job cuts at the software unit are expected to start next year, extending into the end of 2025, citing VW Group lead managers.

Volkswagen’s new 1.2 software, set to debut in the new Porsche Macan EV and Audi Q6 e-tron, is being delayed by 16-18 weeks. Meanwhile, the full-scale 2.0 platform is being completely redeveloped.

The next-gen platform, expected to roll out in 2025, is promised to greatly enhance efficiency by unifying software stacks.

Volkswagen’s SSP platform, which was planned as the “single future backbone,” is also being pushed back. The SSP platform was expected to reduce costs, enabling a margin on par with gas-powered counterparts.


 
Porsche readies Zuffenhausen plant for electric Macan and Boxter

Stuttgart-based automaker Porsche is now channeling its prowess into an electrifying new venture: the production of electric versions of its iconic Boxster and the much-anticipated and repeatedly delayed Macan EV. At the heart of this ambitious project is a major overhaul of its Zuffenhausen factory, marking a pivotal shift in the company's direction.

Porsche's commitment to electrification is evident in its hefty investment of over €250 million to revamp its Zuffenhausen facility. This plant, already home to the legendary Porsche Taycan and various two-door sports cars, is being retooled to accommodate the next generation of electric vehicles.

The electric iteration of the 718 Boxster, which has been under wraps and testing since November 2022, represents a significant stride in Porsche's EV journey. However, a firm release date for this model remains elusive, leaving enthusiasts and industry analysts in a state of eager anticipation. Similarly, the hardtop counterpart, presumably the electric Cayman, has yet to make a public appearance.

Interestingly, the Macan EV, despite its integral role in Porsche's electrification strategy, will not be assembled in Zuffenhausen. Instead, this location will focus on producing the electric motors for this model, indicating a strategic division of labor within the company’s manufacturing ecosystem.

And you can expect endless options via the Porsche configurator. By the time you are done adding all the nice shiit you will be paying for the extras and get a Macan EV thrown in for free.

That configurator must be making them mega bucks. Clever fscks.
