Send out ravens! Ring the bells! For we must spread the good tidings far and wide! In news sure to hearten spirits across the land, a medium-sized SUV is now a German car company’s current best-selling model.
So, let us expel the Golf as the car you always thought was Peak Volkswagen, and instead welcome around the fire the new, third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan. Apparently, VW has shifted 7.5 million of the things since 2007, and the car “is currently the most successful VW model worldwide”.
So there’s a lot riding on this car, which is why Volkswagen tells us it now rides on the MQB evo platform said to “improve the Tiguan in practically every area”. Well, it’s better than making it worse in practically every area. Though we’ll come to the touchscreen shortly.
First up, engines. There’s a revised plug-in hybrid powertrain that gets a new 19.7kWh battery, able to sustain the Tiguan in all-electric mode for up to 62 miles (100km). That’s paired with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol to produce just over 200bhp or just under 270bhp. Combined, VW reckons the Tiguan eTSI is capable of a 621-mile range.

In a world premiere, Volkswagen presented the all-new Tiguan and with it the third generation of the bestseller. The Tiguan is one of the most successful Volkswagen models in the world today. The new technological developments realised with the MQB evo improve the Volkswagen Tiguan in practically every area. New hybrid drives with an all-electric range of around 100 km make this SUV more efficient than ever before. In addition, AC charging will be faster in all eHybrid versions, and fast DC charging will also be possible as standard for the first time. A cleanly designed Digital Cockpit based on the MIB4, the fourth-generation modular infotainment matrix, offers the highest level of information and brings digital services and apps on board. The operating concept is designed to be consistently self-explanatory. In addition, new systems such as a pneumatic massage function for the front seats or the IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights - used for the first time in the Tiguan - are derived from the premium Touareg model. The new adaptive chassis control DCC Pro optimises comfort and dynamics. The latest Park Assist generation automates driving in and out of parking spaces.

The third-generation 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan gets a bold new look and the Wolfsburg-based brand released images detailing a standard model in green and an R-Line derivative in red. There’s a lightbar at both the front and the rear, and depending on trim, different bumpers.
In terms of footprint, the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan stands 4 539 mm long (30 mm longer than before), 1 639 mm tall (4mm taller), 1 842 mm wide (same as before) and has the same wheelbase of 2 680 mm. Given that the Tiguan is the company’s best-selling vehicle, it figures that replacing it with a battery-powered model could be risky, but the new SUV does at least take its hybrid game to the next level.
Revealed in Germany on Tuesday, the new Volkswagen Tiguan is crafted around the updated MQB Evo platform. While its width, height and wheelbase remain almost identical to the outgoing model, the overall length has grown by around 30mm, while luggage capacity has increased by 37 litres to 652 litres.
The exterior design is smoother than the current Tiguan, forging a closer resemblance to the ID.4, and the current version’s large, droopy grille makes way for a glass covered horizontal strip, while breathing now takes place through the outer sides of the bumper.

Volkswagen revealed the all new 2024 model, and the big news is that there will be a plug-in hybrid version of the European-spec car that promises a best-in-class EV range of 62 miles (though with generous European WLTP cycle as its base, we can expect a little less in reality).

The front fascia and headlights are flush and curved with larger grille openings. This is enough to give the Tiguan a drag co-efficient that’s improved from 0.33 to 0.28.
