2024 VW Tiguan

REVIEW: Volkswagen Tayron is classy, practical and refined, but needs more punch

VERDICT

The Volkswagen Tayron successfully fills the gap as a more practical, family-focused alternative to the Tiguan, offering flexible seven-seat capability, a genuinely usable boot and a polished, upmarket interior packed with modern tech.

It drives comfortably and feels refined, but the 1.4 TSI engine is only just adequate for a vehicle of this size, especially when fully loaded.

While well executed and handsome, the Tayron’s steep pricing and modest performance mean it makes the most sense for buyers who value space and luxury over affordability or power.

2026 Volkswagen Tayron R-Line Review

Volkswagen Tayron R-Line Pros

• Classy, timeless styling coupled with solid build and excellent fit & finish
• Practical cabin with good quality materials and multiple storage options
• 2.0L turbo-petrol engine mated to a smooth & quick 7-speed DSG AT offers enjoyable performance at all speeds
• Excellent high-speed stability coupled with sorted handling
• Massive boot (850 litres) with the 3rd seat row down. Boot is usable even with the 3rd seat up
• Loaded to the gills - Harman Kardon 11-speaker ICE, panoramic sunroof, handsfree tailgate, 360-degree camera, auto parking, seat ventilation & massaging, synchronised front seats, head-up display, launch control, different driving modes, heated steering, etc.
• AWD will get the tourers out of tricky situations. Adventure travellers will love it
• 5-star NCAP safety rating & equipment (9 airbags, ADAS level 2 and a wide suite of electronic aids)

Volkswagen Tayron R-Line Cons

• No light-coloured interior options. Black interiors might not appeal to all
• Diesel option is not available. Heavy users will miss the lower running costs. Diesels are still very popular amongst large SUVs in India
• Single-digit fuel economy of the turbo-petrol AT in the city. Drops drastically if you drive aggressively
• Firm low speed ride, thanks to the 19-inch wheels (Kodiaq rides softer). Also, the suspension does make some noise when going about its work
• 3rd row ingress & egress is very difficult. Seats are strictly for children
• DCC (adjustable dampers), which is available in the Tiguan R-Line, is not provided on the Tayron R-Line
• Most functions & settings are operated via the touchscreen - we would've liked some more physical knobs & buttons for convenience
• Missing features such as a full-size spare wheel (you get a space saver), A/C vents for the third row, some ADAS features (blind spot monitoring & rear cross-traffic warning), etc.
