Driven: Why the VW Tayron is the perfect family SUV (with one catch)
Verdict
The Volkswagen Tayron is a sophisticated addition to their SUV range that should be an attractive option for families looking for the space that a seven-seater provides.
There are a few things, though, that could count against it.
With no luggage and with three or four adults, the 1.4-litre turbocharged engine is fit for purpose.
My concern, though, is that with a kerb weight of 1,632kg and a GVM of 2,350kg, there’s 718kg for passengers, fuel and cargo.
That's not insignificant weight, and with limited boot space with the rear seats up, it means in all likelihood you’ll need a Thuli-style roof carrier or a trailer, which naturally adds weight and wind resistance.
That will put a lot of strain on the engine and gearbox, especially at higher altitudes.
Perhaps the 2.0-litre mild hybrid scheduled to arrive later in 4-Motion guise will allay those concerns.
The Touareg is built on the same platform as the Porsche Cayenne in Bratislava, and it’s not financially feasible for the group, but I’m not entirely convinced that the Tayron is a worthy replacement for the Touareg with its legendary V10, V8 and V6 powerplants.
It comes with a three-year/120 000km warranty, five-year/90 000km EasyDrive Service Plan, including a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty.
