208 GTI

Insurance cant be THAT high? Im paying R800 with zero excess on a focus ST

Im impressed with how far Renault have come with quality but one thing still stands...
Everyone I know that has owned any Renault said the same thing, never again.

I bet drivers of Hyundai's and Kia 10 years ago would have said the same but their brands have made leaps in quality.

Same for french cars now.

i disagree, i own a 1999 hyundai accent, had it since 90000km its now on 428000km most reliable car i've ever known.

OP should think of resale value.. i'd stay away from french for that reason..

You've got your money's worth on that.

I meant to say just when hyundai and kia started they were shyte. My point is they have made major progress.

As for resale, when I sold my peugeot I made a profit from a dealer on book value of R40K after settling the bank. Your assumption is a wives tale.

I beg to differ, my mother's Peugeot 207 was written off after an accident that damaged the driver door and part of the dash, all because the value fell so fast.. whereas my older Ford fiesta survived harsher damage with a higher bill without being written off.

If for any reason you sell in 2 years you will lose money. But after 4 you will make a profit. The resale value stabilises.

When you bring insurance into it, how and with who you insure makes all the difference. Insure for full replacement value.

Hi Guys

I am very indecisive, I am looking for a new car. So far it looks like the 208 GTI looks like a great car, fast, comfortable, modern interior and looks very pretty indeed. Not a fan of the Fiesta ST's interior at all, brother has the Clio RS ... Polo.. well there are plenty of them on the road, plus the interior again, while premium, seems dated to me.

what do you think or recommend? Any other cars I should be considering?

Got mine last year, absolutely love it. Finishes are spectacular, by far better than the ford st. It feels premium. At the time I got mine it was R 250/260k now its gone up to over R300? quite a bit more then the ford. Took the 17" rims and smash and grab. I would recommend the charcoal grey colour, it looks the best :p . Full maintenance plan was one of the reasons I took it over the ford.

As for the parts, I was involved in an accident last year, fortunately no engine damage, all just facial, but needed a new front bumper, bonnet, front light, aircon, and a quite a few other small things. Took 2-3 weeks for the parts. I knew this all along so I didn't mind. According to my panel beater, the parts warehouse only has R14 mil worth of parts (which isn't much if you think of all the models), most parts are flown in. Doesn't make sense as it will be cheaper to fly the parts within 2 days then give me a rental for 3 weeks.

Just remember, you're going to be spending 90% of your time driving your hot hatch at 30km/h in peak traffic, so choose with that in mind. I found the Fiesta ST to be WAY too hard-sprung to enjoy in traffic, a very brutal drive. The Peugeot 208 GTI is quite a lot of fun, but honestly I'd go for the Polo GTI if I could ... that DSG gearbox is comfortable, and the acceleration is cartoon-like.

If you are gonna buy a french car buy it second hand as you would get it at a steal.

I definitely will get an insurance quote before I buy any car, but I am turning 25 in a week or so, have never been in an accident (touch wood). So am expecting it to be reasonable for a hot hatch
