So I asked to be moved to VDSL 20mb last week Wednesday. My line and my area supports it so I bought my router and phoned telkom, who manages my line, and asked to be moved to 20mb VDSL. The woman on the other end told me it would take anywhere from 24 - 72 hours, there would be no break in my connection and that I would receive an sms when it was fulfilled.
Well 72 hours is gone, I've got no sms and my router is connecting via ADSL2+ modulation. Yesterday I called and was on hold for 42 min before someone answered before I was transferred to another department (activations) only to be told I'm on vdsl. I know this can't be true because when I force my router into vdsl mode only I get no dsl link. I tried explaining it to her and the call mysteriously dropped.
I joined telkom web chat today hoping to avoid the horrendous wait times and got through to Neville who said this:
11:01:01 AMNeville: Thank you for contacting Telkom, you are chatting to Neville, how may I assist you?
11:01:52 AM You: Hey there
11:02:07 AMNeville: how can i assist you chris?
11:02:29 AM You: Last week wednesday I contacted the upgrades department and asked to be upgraded to 20mb VDSL.
11:02:38 AM You: They upgraded my profile to 20mb ADSL
11:02:53 AM You: And I just want to get moved over to VDSL
11:03:07 AM You: I have already bought a compatible router
11:03:17 AM You: and my area does support it
11:03:21 AM You: as well as my line
11:03:23 AMNeville: what is the telephone mumber so i can check for you
11:03:29 AM You: 021*******
11:03:46 AMNeville: did they confirm that they have done it
11:04:10 AM You: That they have done what?
11:04:52 AMNeville: ok..it shows that your line is a 20Meg
11:05:03 AM You: Yes but it's not VDSL
11:05:26 AM You: I know because if I force my router into VDSL mode I get no connection
11:05:58 AM You: All that happened was I was upgraded to 20mb ADSL
11:07:55 AMNeville: you are on 20MB that is VDSL
11:08:20 AM You: It is not VDSL. I am still connecting via ADSL2+ modulation
11:08:28 AMNeville: VDSL is 20Meg and 40Meg
11:09:16 AM You: Yes but there is a technical difference between adsl and vdsl. Thats why you need a new router.
11:09:16 AMNeville: ADSL is 10Meg, 4Meg, 2Meg
11:10:30 AM You: Adsl supports up to 24mb.
11:10:39 AM You: But it is not vdsl
11:11:23 AMNeville: yes you are going to need a new router ... that will be the Pace 921VNX
11:12:18 AM You: Nevermind. Thank you for your help.
11:12:49 AM You: Have a nice day
Am I right in thinking that VDSL is a different modulation and that it requires that your line be moved to different port on the exchange to get access to it?
So now I'm asking myself is 20mb VDSL a myth? Can someone else on 20mb VDSL please share how they were moved over.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, even from ISPs. :/
