24 Hour Reset gone

My router says it's been connected for 18 hours. I haven't switched connections yet, power wasn't out either, so I guess it's not everyone ;)

Are you guys on SAIX or IS ? I just got an IS account this month, and this is a quote from the stats usage page:

Dear User

Please note as a preparatory step towards doing away with the periodic 24 hour DSL disconnects, we will be implementing some changes to our DSL statistics system. ADSL usage will no longer be measured on a session basis, which is currently 24 hours. We are moving to a model based on split sessions. Instead of seeing one entry for each session, users will see one entry per interim update. Currently there will be approximately one update per hour. Each split session will indicate the Start and End time, as well as the period of time that is covers. This has the following advantages for users: i

1) Users will not only be able to see how much bandwidth they have used, but also approximately when the bandwidth was used;
2) We will be in a position to extend user sessions beyond 24 hours, as soon as this option is available;
3) Bandwidth usage will be allocated more accurately to the day and month in which it was used.

The presentation of the statistics will remain largely the same. The month and day views will look identical. The detailed day view will, however, contain far more details.
You should see the statistics changes coming into effect from the 1st of November 2007.
Please do not hesitate to contact the IS Broadband Team should you require further information.

Regards
The IS Broadband Team

Which means the end of last minute bingeing?

Same thing occurred to me; this has been the case for SAIX for a while now (continuous update of bw usage), but it seems that IS is now set to follow. Blast, no more gaming the system.

Didn't something similar to tis happen in the last couple of months, only to revert later in the month? It could well be a malfunction with SAIX.

SAIX malfunction???? Nah impossible.

If this is true, this really is a step in the right direction!

No, I've still got the 24 hour reset, SAIX ;)

ya IS seems to update your BW usage frequently hey ... its only a few megs off what my net monitor reports.. like most of the time..

It is obvious how the isp would find this to their advantage but what about the consumer? If so then why?

How does this not benefit the customer??? Not having the connection reset every 24hrs seems like a benefit to me, and the ability to monitor usage per hour, rather then per session, is certainly helpful.

How does it benefit me? No, really, I want to know how this positively affects my life. I could imagine some (very few) customers with critical aps finding it to their advantage (it's a joke though: my connection drops quite a few times a day, not just every 24 hrs). For the average user though I can see no advantage (and one obvious huge disadvantage).

The 24hr reset though is the most minor of the issues facing us: give us cheaper bandwidth (unshaped if you please). That would make a difference. I can hardly wait for the smug, overfed, overpaid jerks at TELKOM to tell the world what good little boys and girls they've been in finally complying with a non-negotiable legal requirement. Ugh. I need a drink.

Well I'm glad you find it useful but none of those things actually benefits me.

Perhaps it will make it easier for the ISP to insure local access isnt subject to the cap? Now that would be a real benefit to me.
