And looking at my router, my connection says :

Connected time so far 2 day(s), 13 hour(s) 56 min(s)

This is with Mweb. I also have a Webafrica unshaped account, but that still resets every 24 hours.

Anyone else notice their connection isn't getting reset?

It's been like this for a while ;) With Eksdom and Telscum's sucky network, I haven't made the 3 day mark yet, either power goes down, or I have to reboot the router to get a new IP because sites crawl ;)

Connected Time 306hr 49min 52sec
Mine clearly hasnt reset lately. And Im with telkom

what garbage. its got nothing to do with network. ISPs are probably setting a session time limit or idle timeout. The problem with that is that the ICASA ruling is that they are not supposed to but now that people fought for that ruling, no one wants to enforce it if it is not Telkom Internet. It cracks me up that people actually think that getting a different IP address will result in better network performance...

Really? Then I'd be sure to send a strongly worded letter to Telscum and the white starlight and express my utter anger at being "idled" on a 24/7 ADSL account.

I'll do the same for Eksdom as well, thank you!

I am not sure what that message is supposed to mean, but never mind... Let me put the point across a little bit clearer... maybe typing it slowly may help you. If Mweb set an idle timeout or a session timeout as part of the access-accept packet to SAIX, then SAIX are only carrying out this instruction as set by the ISP. They are not responsible for disconnecting users. They don't set 24hr disconnects. There are a lot of problems associated with users staying online permanently and I will assume that as a measure to get around them, ISPs are setting these time outs. I will re-iterate my point that it is absolute garbage to indicate that this is Telkom's problem for 24hr disconnects. As for the changing IP addresses to 'get a faster connection' - explain to me how that works pls... The weekends almost over, I could do with a good laugh before the week starts...

What on earth is your problem? Having a bad day or something?

Wow, again, thank you so much!

Anyway, let me type out what my first post in this thread means, slowly, so you can understand.

TelkomISP in particular has issues where sites crawl randomly and without reason, this is not SAIX, it's purely a TI issue. I switch to my WebAfrica account when this happens for about 10 minutes and then switch back to TI, which leaves me with a 100% working connection.

The same as above applies to Telkom Internet accounts which won't, also randomly, authenticate, the solution I have found is to log on to telkomsa.net and change the account password, which again, also magically fixes the issue. This isn't an issue with an authentication server and is purely account based, since other TI accounts work fine.

I just cannot believe that either of the above is true and I would love to see some sort of evidence to support this. If you like you can msg me privately. My issue is that people often bleat on about mystical problems and often make up any reason as to what the issue is. And as this forum is usually moaning about Telkom & Eskom, then it appears to often be convenient to just blame them and it also gains popularity.

also remember that having a poor SNR (lot of possible reasons) is going to force the router to resync - and if this continues for 2-4 attempts the ppp/pppoe session is lost.

Wow, tera and bonobo, why are you guys typing slowly? Are you retarded? Its gonna come out exactly the same! :D:D

So much hostility in so many threads these days :/

Resetting your IP does have an effect on your internet speed. But maybe the reason for it is a bit hidden. I am no IT expert, but this is what I have experienced.
Using a firewall (like ZoneAlarm) you can see how much internet traffic to your PC is being blocked. For those of us using P2P aplications, your shared files are assosiated with your IP, so people around the world that were put on hold to download from you, will ping your IP till long after you have shut down the p2p software. After a few hours of trying to download a movie or whatever, there are so many people trying to get data back from you your connection slows down to a crawl. If you open ZoneAlarm and check the blocked traffic, you most likely will see about 2-5 incoming connections per second being blocked! Resetting the IP immediatly stop all the incoming connections and your internet speed is back to normal.

Atleast this is my experience, while I stayed in Germany and frequently downloaded stuff via p2p. All p2p downloads are not illegal though, since major PC game companies also uses this method to distribute patches faster.

There may be some other reasons as well, but will leave that to the IT experts to share.

Connection with Webafrica unshaped have been up for a week now. I still get some disconects though! The time connected keeps counting down, but for a few seconds around midnight there is sometimes no internet traffic possible even though the router says it is connected. Experienced this the last 3 days.
