My Samsung 250GIG SATA HD has this very faint oscillating hum to it which is starting irritate the life out of me. Like every 3 seconds I get this "hummmmm"

As I said it isvery faint, most people probably wouldn’t notice it if I didn’t point it out, but it’s there and can even feel it through the desk slightly if you touch your hand on the desk or KB.

The drive is only a few months old so not sure. I have moved it around the case and still doesn’t help.

Could it be imminent failure or just one of those annoying little things?

Does the humming go to a beat?

Try tapping your feet ; may make you less frustrated

there is an ant in your hard drive - spray some doom in the little holes and it will go away.

the hum happens every 3 seconds when he falls off the platters he uses for cardio training.

Fu*k sakes, why is that everytime I post on this forum I get a bunch of useless answers. Is my question that ridiculous that it deserves such stupid responses?

*sigh*

I would say it hums, because the platters aren't balanced. So my helpful answer is that it might be fooked. Take it back to get replaced.

LOL

we all make jokes from time 2 time ;)

any way, afaik a humming noise usually means the drive is spinning up, but if it happens every 2 seconds as you say then there's definitely something wrong, run some diagnostic tests on it. you can use seatools from seagate, it works on wd drives as well.

Variations in speed is my guess - on its way out, backup & get it swapped out!

Thanks Fubar - The drive doesn’t give me any performance issues, just the faint hum worries me a little.

I have taken it out the case and held it while on and I don’t feel that intermittent hum like I do when its in the machine. But as I said I have changed drive bays and that didn’t help.

Will try seatools, its a Samsung drive so hope it works.

Downloaded seatools and it actually doesnt detect any of my drives, not even my seagate lol.

Samsung diagnostics test is available on their website. It's a boot CD/floppy. I hear it can take up to 2 hours though (on 500GBs at least) so make some time for it.

I assume you've tried seating the drive differently, perhaps with a bit of padding?

Thanks Postman, will check that out.

well there is a theory, and I dont know how possible it is, that goes something like this..

a fan/hard drive spins at a certain frequency, and sometimes when you have more than one on the same/close frequency it produces this regular hummming noise!

seriously I thought this was bollocks until my father swapped out one of his fans in his case and walaa!! problem gone!!

So I was like yeah wateva, and hooked up the "problem fan" and I swear that thing was as quiet as when it came out the box...

Just a thought, use it dont use it...

Guess you could unplug the one drive and see what happens

:D

I have read that somewhere else and it is very possible. I think I will try dissconect some of the fans in case, disconnect the other HD and see if there is any difference.
