So as the title suggests, I'm having issues getting the mac to output 2560x1080 over DVI-D. It only wants to give me standard 1920x1080. What gives?

As Apple states on their website basically all morden mac are capable of 4k output.

I don't think standard DVI supports resolution over 1080p. You have to get a display port to dual link dvi adapter or something like that $$$. Or if the monitor supports display port, just use a display port cable, it will be much cheaper.

Thats exactly what I have a displayport to dual link dvi adapter. The monitor does have displayport aswell. I'll give that a go!

I have a mid 2012 macbook pro retina and use a mini display port -> displayport cable to connect a Dell 27 inch monitor @ 2560x1440 resolution. I initially tried an hdmi cable but was also restricted to 1080p res which I think has to do with the laptop only having an hdmi1.3 port and not an hdmi 1.4 port. Bought a cheap mini display port -> displayport cable from a chinese website and then was running at full res.

Does your screen have a displayport in? If so you'll have to use the Macs Displayport/minidisplayport to your screens displayport/mini displayport.

Yeah the screen does have displayport aswell as 2x hdmi.
The hdmi will probably have the same issue. I would try the displayport. Your Mac should have a thunderbolt which is equivalent to displayport out.
