I recently moved from a 2MB Axxess account to a 2MB Mweb account and even after talking to the Mweb guy on Twitter, I'm not very happy with the speed I'm getting. I'm switching over to another ISP end of May/June and I'm not sure which to choose. Which would you guys say is the better option. OpenWeb or Afrihost?

I'm moving from a 4mg openweb account to afrihost.

I just found openweb too up and down. I seem to have a better afrihost experience right now. I'm going to give them a go for a month or two and see how it goes.
I was going to try axxess but I got scared off by the shaping posts in the axxess lady thread.

Afrihost is fine so long as you don't download a lot since it had a rolling threshold earlier this year and since moved to Telkom :)

I assume you are looking for uncapped? What is your average monthly usage? For R450 a month from Afrihost you can get an up to 10Mbps ADSL account with 50GB a month. Which would do ok if your usage is not too high.

Hi OutsiderZA,

Kindly drop me a PM and I will arrange a complimentary trial account for you :)

Uncapped, yes. My monthly usage is 30-40GB which is not a lot compared to a few people I know.

I am on Mweb now and I'm not happy with the speed I'm getting compared to the speed I got with Axxess.

So I tested the complimentary trial I got from OpenWeb's MrBeep and I'm fairly Impressed. The speed I got was stable with downloads and my the ping with my online gaming was as low as Mweb's. I'll be moving over to OpenWeb's gold uncapped package but until the end of June, I'm stuck with Mweb's uncapped.

I'd be happy to chat more to you about how our products work, either Uncapped or Capped DSL. We don't use thresholds or rolling windows anymore, and there is absolutely no throttling whatsoever on any of our products. We shape our home Uncapped product only in times of high demand for bandwidth, and that only applies to downloads like file sharing, P2P, etc. Real time services are always guaranteed access to full line speed available. We also have our Business DSL range, which is completely unshaped (and uncapped).

Drop me a PM, and we can talk about what might be the best option for you.

I've been with OpenWeb for two weeks now, and I'm very happy so far. I recently got a new SSD so I had to reinstall Windows and all the other software + update them all. Now I have to download my online games from scratch, so I've been racing through bandwidth so far and I haven't even gotten to my Origin games yet. I also have a capped account from Afrihost when the ping in my online games is a little high with OpenWeb. Received a call from Mweb on Monday to ask if there's anything they can do to get me back and after speaking to the guy for about 5 minutes, he said he'd get back to me with a capped account solution since I've already paid Mweb for this month. 3 days later and still no response.

Overall my experience with OpenWeb is really good, except for the ping in my online games on certain evenings, but I swop over to Afrihost then. I've downloaded 40gb on my 2MB account so far with no sign of shaping.

MrBeep, if you'd be so kind, will you please give me a brief explanation on how and when I could get shaped. I'm not sure whether you have a list that shows your top bandwidth users, so I can't really see how far away I am from that :)

shaping happens during the day mostly. depending on the size of your package. no shaping based on usage. just runs like a rabid dog.

depending on what gold package you took, your shaping shouldnt be to bad.

Hi Outsider,

Shaping is based on how busy the network is at any given time.
