I realise that 2nd hand graphics cards are not ones first pick - no one really knows how theyve been treated, OCd, etc.
Nonethless if I can pick up one for 3/4 of the going price and its only 4 months old, should I steer clear of it?
It still has a 2 year warranty and original invoice so I can claim if needed.

Ive never bought any PC parts 2nd hand, but I am somewhat tempted as it seems good value for money.

Im sure Pada will end up reading this - yes its the 460 gtx hawk ive mentioned in my last thread. OCd cards I know.. Im probably gonna kick myself after reading some of the replies but hey.. Im still curious.

Search Carbonite.co.za to compare prices for second-hand GTX 460s, then add R100 because this one's a HAWK.

I would also suggest you only buy from members with good iTrader ratings on carbonite as well, instead of using Gumtree etc.

Bought a 2nd hand one a few years back (to clarify different card type). Worked well enough.

I'd probably do so again, but only from someone with decent rep (online or otherwise). Nonetheless it is a bit of a gamble, esp with GPUs.

Hereticangle: you should've posted that in the Hardware Bagains thread! R1300 for an overclocked GTX460 1GB is madness!

no need to be in stock when my cousin order tomorrow :P

like the hd 6870 hawk is out of stock again, wanted to get him that :P

dood if you looking for 2nd hand pc parts carbonite is the way to go.
I've traded on there quite a bit with only good experiences (can become quite a close nit community).
So far i've bought
GTX 260, Radeon HD5850, GTX295 and all 3 worked brilliantly.
My current pc. i7 950, EVGA SLI mobo, 6gb ram. still working brilliantly after 1 1/2 years since i bought it.
All of this at a fraction as what it would cost brand new :)

Tips for buying:
Look at their iTrader score.
Look at their posts/activitiy, you do get those 1 time wonders that try shny you, but quite few and far between.
Warranties also help :)

Heres another one that just went on carbanite: http://www.carbonite.co.za/f10/460-gtx-hawx-18237/
Still think im that mad?

That Club 3D card hereticangel mentioned is ridiculous though.. And its new. Seems theyve got stock as well. Better option for sure.

Well there is a difference between a seller trying his luck and getting lucky and someone buying it for 1.4k, maybe 2 months ago but you can get a 6870 for a little bit more new. A new one would not be far off 1.4k. If you want to buy one for 1.4k you can go for it but it seems a bit much to me.

True that, think im gonna pass on the 2nd hand hawk then. I want to go SLI so badly though, might just order myself the Club 3D one tonight.

If you're going for SLI, please keep the following things in mind:

You'll need a 650W+ PSU with 4x 6-pin PCI-E connectors.
It is advisable that you get a motherboard with PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots that can operate at 16x + 16x or 8x + 8x, and preferably not 16x + 4x !
Lastly, I would advise you to go for a big case with a bottom-mounted PSU. The smallest case that I would recommend would be the Coolermaster 690 II series, which is already pretty big but not E-atx size yet ;)

O wait sli, no then buy it dude. Offer the guy 1.2k and get it. Awesome cooling will help with the sli, sorry i missed the sli bit if you had mentioned it. I am sure sliing to cards with standard cooling is great idea. The hawk is insane regarding how cool it runs.

I doubt he will need a 650w power supply, i run 3 6970's on a 750w so two 460's should easily make it on a good 500w but there is no harm in buying a good 650w depending on what you have no of course.

yeah ordered a club 3d gtx 460 a few minutes ago, lets hope it does not take to long, my cousin wants to play ff14 on max :P

killadoob: the only reason I suggest a 650W+ PSU for GTX460 in SLI would be due to the smaller PSU's not having enough PCI-E connectors.
You're right about a decent 500W PSU (eg. Antec HCG520) being enough, but then overclocking should be limited slightly. My i7 940 @ 3.8GHz + 2x GTX460's @ 878MHz peaked at about 480W from the PSU / ~540W from the wall.

Yea for sure but these days with a decent psu being like 800-1k you gotta try and run your stuff on what you have first, even if you use the molex to pci connectors.

When i got my 6990 and 6970 i was temped to buy a bigger psu than the 750 cause i thought there is no way i would run them but then i thought no ways what if it does work, then i have just wasted 2k for nothing. This psu must be geared for plenty gpu's though cause it has so many 6 + 2 pins

Put them in, pushed the power button and bam up and running with overclocking i might add :D, so now i will rather test a setup with my current psu than buy one before testing.

Another big thanks to hereticangel, just ordered my Club3D 460 GTX :D Id love to run some benchmarks once ive gone SLI. Ive got the same CPU and motherboard as you.

Ill be ordering my Corsair TX750 soon enough, as advised by you Pada.
And yes my motherboard runs 8x + 8x so that wont be an issue.
Ive got a Sigma Raptor. Its not the most amazing case but it keeps things relatively cool.
Thanks again :)
