Ok so i bought a second hand ipad from someone on gumtree...

i have managed to default it, but it still needs original owners appel_id in order to sign in and for me to (hopefully) change to new appel_id...

Ifix in melrose arch said the same thing...

so if the guy i bought it from doesnt respond, its useless?

yes / no?
anybody wish to comment?

Unless the iPad is on iOS7 already. If on iOS7 and you want to wipe the iPad or restore it - if memory serves me correctly - Apple introduced a new security feature that you will first need to deactivate Find my iPhone / iPad and to do this you will need the password for the original user.

Resetting to default is fine as that just deletes all the content and settings and mail boxes ect you have added.

I haven't tried do the Restore from iTunes without disabling but can't see why that wouldn't work. Just download the latest iOS 7 firmware available for your iPad, then open iTunes and restore using that file. If you download the restore from iTunes, it can take much longer and has known to fail during download, but if you have the download already, then you don't need to worry about that.

Let us know how it goes.

^Aye,but i'm assuming a 2nd hand ipad is more likely an older gen
If not downloading the firmware and doing a "restore" to the firmware will do the same as a factory reset

Just put it into DFU mode (youtube that) and factory restore

If the device has iOS 7 on it. You might be able to put into DFU mode but will be stuck at the activation screen that requires the previous owner's Apple ID and password to proceed. Sorry to sound harsh but chances are that you bought a very expensive glass mirror.

Agreed, if on iOS 7 you will have to have the old log buying or MUST make sure the old owner signs out of iCloud and turns Find My iPhone/iPad off. If you don't, it's a paperweight.

Age of iPad or iPhone doesn't matter, most users update when a new version of iOS comes out.

Unfortunately it seems you may have been ripped off. Have you tried contacting the guy again? Where did you meet, if at his house then go there and ask him to remove the password. Did you not test the iPad before purchasing it?

What alot of people do is sell the stolen iPads knowing that it will be useless. A friend of mine bought one a few months back and I told him to test the iPad first and also login with his Apple account and making sure everything works like the store and iCloud before paying the guy as this is becoming a bigger problem everyday.

Your only chance really is to get hold of the guy.

What version iOS is the iPad running?

Can you not contact apple support and ask them to disassociate the device from that apple id?

I recently did that for my MacBook after an issue with iTunes Match.

I always getting return emails from Apple India.

I'm pretty sure that just de-authorizes the device from your apple ID for transferring of purchases between devices ect, it doesn't remove the apple ID account completely from the device itself - I am pretty sure you will still need to enter the password to remove or restore. I have de-authorized many of my idevices over the years and it never removed anything from my idevices, the only thing that changes was the number of authorized devices attached to my account.

I see.

Shame man, looks like the guy is going to have to google till his fingers fall off for a "solution"

Yeah it sucks. I still think seeing he got it off Gumtree, maybe he met the guy at his house (highly doubtful if it is indeed stolen) and then ask him to remove it - all he needs is the password and then it takes 5 seconds.

Hope he comes right.
