Hi Guys,

I have a 2TB Seagate Internal HDD that I'm unable to format back to 2TB. Windows format tool pics up drive as 1TB and Disk Management also only sees 1TB. Can you guys suggest any formatting tools to help with this issue. I'm using Win7 64bit OS.

Thanks

Pretty Sure :) . Thanx will have alook at the links

mouks, first check the entire device under disk management, it may have unpartitioned space

ALSO!:

MBR is not able to reference more then 2TB per partition on a drive, you may have to convert the drive from MBR to GPT

If you need more help just post back here

Where do I get the option to convert drive from MBR to GPT I saw that once cant remember where..

Eish sorry dude, I read your post incorrectly.

The GPT solution is only relevant for drives above 2TB :(

Sorry, I have removed my post

EDIT: But i'll post the convert anyway.

Open Command Prompt in administrator mode.

type : 'Diskpart' without the quotation marks.
type : 'List Disk' this will list all your avaible drives, identify the '2TB' disk eg.
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
Disk 0
Disk 1 Online 2TB 0B

type: 'SELECT DISK 1' where DISK 1 is your '2TB' drive
type: 'DELETE DISK 1'
type: 'SELECT DISK 1' again
type: 'CONVERT GPT'

Afterwards try to format this drive in disk management.

If the drive is still a 1TB you can return it, definately a dud.

Windows disk management should show you the full size of the disc on the left and the partitions on the right. If it says 1TB on the left then it's a 1TB drive.

Does it format 1TB successfully and assign drive letter?
Do it for checking, as drive might be firmware locked due to malfunction, it will fail on any read/write operation.

Model number of this drive?

If its a ST1000 its 1TB
If its a ST2000 its 2TB

Okay I remember I had a drive a while back, reporting as an incorrect size. Showing me 4GB out of 120GB - I had to use a hex editior to fix the issue though.

Let me do some digging for you...

In the interim, can you post a screen shot of the HDD in Windows Storage management (I think thats what it is called?)

Is any reason for not following this?
