It's a schlep yeah. Ages ago I bought a 3.5" SSD, but even that didn't fit into my old box's floating bays.
Just recently I went through the same thing with a 2.5" SSD. I got a mounting kit from an online store but it still couldn't go in any of my proper drives. Eventually I took apart the box and noticed by accident that the mounting kit fits nicely into the old stiffy drive chassis.
If that hadn't worked I would just have used some 2 sided tape/velcro...
