3-D Televisions all the rage

I fail to see the long term practicality in acquiring one of these.Imagine you have people over to watch something and each of them has to don a pair to watch.
Not to mention days when you can't find your 3D glasses what do you do.

Firstly drives price of normal HDTV down, secondly holographic images in the home must start somewhere. Third I doubt anyone would misplace goggles that cost R600-800 a pop. For the group dilemma - either shout "shotgun", play rock-paper-scissors or simply state "I paid for them." And last but not least, one word... Avatar

Yeah I've now done months of reading reviews, checking spec's, what's on the horizon etc. 3D is here to stay.

I had a LOT of questions regarding the feasability of TV's when compared to the Cinema counterparts.... Is the effect the same? What about headache's? Eye strain? etc etc. I was looking around and came across the Sammy 40C7000. Admittedly not the best, but man was I sold immediately after watching (far from the best) 3D bluray.

One of the more interesting developments for me was LG's LW6500. It's their Cinema range of TV's, meaning that it is mostly in the exact ratio of most movies, removing the borders normally seen at the top and bottom of the screen. The other interesting bit is that it's Passive 3D as opposed to Active 3D. All that really means is that you can use the cheapo glasses you get when going out to movies. There are sadly pro's and con's between Active/Passive 3D, but it makes my decision a little more interesting :)

I'd get one if I had the money. 3D is here to stay, people have been saying it's a passing fad for about 3 years now, it's pretty safe to say it's not. They just need to perfect the technology.

I only wish real life was 3D:p

I was REALLY hoping to get one of the Samsung 46c7000 + Player + Starter pack from Dion Wired for R15000, sadly they had already sold out when I phoned them. Guessing we're moving on to the "D" range now. Hey at least they are supposed to reduce Crosstalk and ghosting. Hopefully they are competitively priced....

What good is 3D if the content is rubbish? Maybe I'm getting old, but I would much rather have better quality movies than the same old crap in 3D.

Last year I saw some Phillips 3D tvs on display at the airport (think it was JHB) which worked without 3D glasses. Looked quite cool. Wonder why the glassless 3D TV's never caught on?

Mainly due to them being very expensive to produce and having limited size. The other drawback is that I think they said there is a VERY small viewing angle... like if you're not right in front, you don't see the effect. This is the next generation though. I think all the major players are looking are making this affordable. Is has however been said that glasses-less 3D is still a long way off.

Let the technology advance and we'll get there. Remember when we had no USB or HDMI on tv's and hifi's ? Remember when cellphones came out there was no sms, and it was only 'black & white' ? Technological advances will bring out newer technology which in turns reduces prices of the previous editions/ranges of the product.

If u watch tv without much reason, u probably use ur laptop for work only and ur cell to call only and hv no game console sitting at home. U will nevr think twice about the importance of upgrading unless forced! I wont even mention iPads, 3d, fibre...

I have one of those Philips (42-3D6W02) 3d panels (autostereoscopic view), but unfortunately only demo content available at the moment. But it is awesome. Just waiting for the industry to catch on. The viewing angle on these are quite wide, but no standing closer than 3 m for the 42", hurts the eyes. Hopefully the wearing glasses crap will phase out soon, and these will take over.
