That's the bottom line folks !

It's obvious that this is what the customers want, so somewhere along the line, the ISP's are going to have to work out how to provide this after October.

Telkom is basically passing the buck to the ISP in terms of low cost and will drop them when the new price structure kicks in - nice one Telkom, why are we not suprised ?

What should really be happening is the scrapping of line rental (as suggested by everyone except Telkom) or at least the lowering of it, to allow ISP's a fair playing field.

we are the market, wth they talking about, we like what we seeing atm.
causing a stir in IS maybe, since now they have problem selling their R1500 uncapped package which not one of us can offord anywayz.
competition is the way to go, we r the ones that's paying for the service, IS must just take it and squeeze into their backside and shut up. Or otherwise provide something more competitive and stop blame the other ISPs.
 
You are either on the bus when it leaves, or you are not. The choice is yours whether you want to buy a ticket or not.

This means come November a wholesale 3GB account will cost +- R150. With some ISP's charging +- R220 for 3GB at the moment the price of bandwidth will almost stay the same. And I thought ADSL bandwidth charges were coming down...
 
The big companies need to read the writing on the wall and join the fight against telkom. If they were throwing their weight behind people like rpm and the myadsl site the government might make the changes more quickley. Telkoms bad attitude is affecting everybody even if they don't know it.
Cmon big business help with the fight more.
 
I think the problem is that; IS and UUNET cannot provide a lower cost service, because Telkom is holding the international bandwidth ransom.

It seems that Telkom have offered only a select few ISPs the ability to provide high cap accounts for their 'beta' testing. This is abusing the monopoly and is unfair business practice since this package is not available to everyone.

However, UUNet and IS are pointing their guns in the wrong direction.

EDIT: Besides, how can they still be charging "per gig"? The amount of information that passes through, costs nothing. Surely they should only charge for the bandwidth size? Do Telkom get charged "per gig" they send through the SAT-3? I highly doubt it.

How can we possibly go from 30GB accounts back to the cr@ppy 3GB accounts???

And I agree, R50 per GB is rediculously overpriced!

They do tho.. MWeb and IS are but 2 companies who made presentations at the hearings.

Is this not something for the Competition Board or whatever?

The highest priority for ICASA (and goverment) at the moment is to get the undersea SAT/SAFE fiber optic cable declared an essential service. Then all ISP's can compete on equal footing with Telkom and buy international bandwidth at cost price from SAIX.

This will also help the SNO to get its foot in the door, and keep the Telkom bottom-feeding hand out of our wallets.
 
R50/GB is insane! Although alot can happen between now & November and it could see the lowering of the price per/GB
 
I think that we need to keep the pressure on telskum. We have won a small/medium victory with the ICASA findings, but we have still not really won the war. So whatever it takes, we have to get ICASA to implement those findings .. and preferrably b4 november... or I will not be able to afford adsl anymore :)
 
if current prices are R10 per gig, and they increase it to R50 per gig, this would be perfect for exposing telkom in the media for ripping of the public. imagine how that would sound - telkom increases bandwidth charges by 500% :D and knowing some very clever journalists, they could make it sound really bad for telkom. just a thought though...
 
Public outcry (without petrol bombs) is not going to scare Telkom much ... a court ruling imposing a massive & continued fine for uncompetitive behavior will.

we're 5000+ members, if only a small percentage of us donate some money into a general slush fund, for legal actions, I'm sure we can begin to raise havoc and mayhem, at least to Telkom's perspective...

I realise not everyone signed up, on forum, would be willing to chuck any donations towards a legal action (or two) - however, if you do the maths,
and realise that for instance, with a simple R100 donation from everyone on forum, MyAdsl suddenly has a half million rand to pay evil lawyers to do our bidding.

We're only limited by our ability to conceive of Evil Fun Plans, gather finances in some secure way, and nominate rpm or others to go get a shark-law firm to attack Telkom on our behalf.

I'm in. Though I believe this site to be more of a neutral zone I am quite sure Mad wouldn't mind getting a bit of revenge :D or maybe even antitrust
