30 Gb in 5 days

Well, I plan to ask imaginet for another 30GB account today (I've already capped out my other one *cries* so I'll match that :P :)

Dont forget - telkom now says ADSL is for downloading music and movies so if you're not doing that you are abusing your line.

Quite frankly if you're having trouble downloading 30gb in a month you're just not trying hard enough.

Damned straight bwana :P I capped out on thursday. This is the longest I've managed to survive capped...

I just $#%^$# hope that TELKOM technician will arrive Friday............I have taken day off from work so he better be here !!!!!

PS thanks for all the tips

clubbe

hehe ja swaer, Telkom werk teen die negatiewe spoed van lug. ;-)

Jeez, I got an xtra 10GB account this month and I'm running out of stuff to d/l. I wouldn't know what to do with 30GB in 5 days.

Interesting point: I took a 10GB account from saol.com on the 15th, expecting to pay R249. But 'cos it was halfway through the month, they gave me a discount and I only paid R199.:) I don't know why...but good for them!

hehe soz refresh my memory? I can only feel love and hate for a few minutes. My designer did not program me with dynamic memory ;/

Hey Clubbe, I sincerly hope you passed telkom's gruelling/gross conformancy testing! Mine failed, I had to call em to find out my Aug 1st order was cancelled:( The buggers!! Good luck with your downloading endeavors! I envy all you guys adsl happy exchanges... I feel I could torch mine :D To add insult to injury telkom tells me my exchange has fibre optics running to it, they said that adsl only works over copper, this true?

yup same as my buddy in brackenfell, last mile needs to be copper and hes running on fibre aswell.. most of brackenfell newer areas have fibre :/

Either telkom deploy mini-dslams as promised or you wont get adsl.

Hey clipse, same here I stay in Protea Village... this sucks!!

Wow do you know a morne living near you? He lives basicly at the entrance of protea village ;-)

I hate the fact that Telkom want to charge per gig, but it seems like some people are forcing it - thanks beyaach.

Funny, it doesn't seem to me like people are forcing it at all. Telkom claim most users don't even hit their cap. (Claim made at the ICASA hearings). even people who download all they can and are as "abusive" as they can possibly be, probably do less than 50gb per month, which isn't all that much.

The only nice thing about charging per gig is that those using their ADSL for work wont have to be so frustrated at the end of the month when all the idiots who have some bandwidth left, start downloading like crazy.

Yes... awesome. I work in software development and we have to download several gbs every month in new software releases, beta software, etc. I'm glad we'll be paying several hundred rand extra every month for the sake of knowing our speed wont degrade for the last 5 days of the month.

If Telkom cared at all about that service degradation they would simply impose a 24 hour limit of a few hundred megs...

I fail to see how wanting to download stuff or enjoy some web radio or something on the last few days of the month makes people "idiots".

You believe this will solve the end month issue? Think again, it will just make room for higher contentions and more users on same bandwidth.

i cant wait for icasa to make telkom show us there contention ratios, bet you they are something outrageos like 1000:1

That's exactly what I mean - he's paying for it, so why wont Telkom not charge more for silly downloads? But soon most serious downloaders will also turn 13 and slow down. Where were the days when I also downloaded/uploaded everything I saw on the internet (and then you grow up and got use to it). Luckly, I was living in the UK - so 100 GB, 200 GB did matter.

Why do you think Telkom wants to charge per GIG - surely it's because they know everyone downloads only a fair amount, and they want to save you money (I think not). We use to do the same ages ago when I was working on the layout for Cable and Wireless ADSL.

And since you are surely on a 1:1 contention ratio it doesnt matter how much bandwidth you're using. I hate the fact that Telkom want to charge per gig, but it seems like some people are forcing it - thanks beyaach.

The only nice thing about charging per gig is that those using their ADSL for work wont have to be so frustrated at the end of the month when all the idiots who have some bandwidth left, start downloading like crazy.

Classic, I see you have no idea of the current contention ratio affair, and also you have no idea that the reason everything is getting more choked is because of the increased contention ratio.. BAD not GOOD..

I know for a fact, that you have no idea what wireless adsl is nor what you were refering to as cable adsl.

Does it matter when I want to use my bandwidth, what if I paid for 3gig, and end month I only used 1gig, am I not allowed to clean the rest of my 3gig or should I just ignore the fact that I paid for it. Majority of users end month just use their remaining megs/gigs and thats why with the major contention atm estimated(?) over 100:1, you see ****ty speeds end month.

This is the silliest thing someone could have ever said. Is'nt our fight to get lower prices. What was it we all agreed with - "with lower prices more people will be able to sign up" - rigtht?

So what you are saying then is that will also make room for "higher contentions and more users on same bandwidth" - thats very clever - shot!!

In restrospect, if your pea for a brain could think, you would realise the service would just degrade with this option, if 10000000000 people go and buy 1gig option. We have no promise of increased bandwidth with more users, do we ? Btw, if you ever knew what higher contention meant, then you would know its BAD not GOOD.

Anyways, this is not what I meant, if you still believe per gig billing cost ANYTHING less for same product, your asleep and should get a prince to kiss you awake.

Your just paying less, for LESS!! This is like the discounts at edgars, there is none but freaken hell, alot of clowns jump for it.

I get really heated when people have no idea what they try to discuss, when I actually do know what im talking about and then read a ****ty comment like yours.

So you really fail to see that you are misusing bandwidth when you are just downloading because you dont know what to download. Are your software company downloading 100's of movies just because you dont know what to download?

Please send my regards to your boss, Mr. Vapi. I see no reason why a consumer would even think this way. Misusing bandwidth? Is there a structured legal method of using bandwidth, or perhaps its available to use at your freedom of choice. Please point me to the official rulebook of 2005, cause man your talking a load of poo.

Hey interesting amount of posts aswell, Love this.
