31.3% Eskom price increase

time for the vaseline

:(

But is the hike constitutional? Will the rich actually start paying more (including BIG companies) and smaller companies (like the mom and pop shop) and the homeowner be left alone?

Expect more retrenchments and layoffs.

ooo... so they said NO!... you can't have your 34% because thats too much...

Here take 31.3% instead....

WTF came up with 31.3%... such a random value.

Yes I gotta go the the grocer again for a new 500ml tub of vas..... My 3rd one for the week.

I should start a Vaseline manufacturing business to afford the increasing cost of living in SA

Zimbabwe must be overjoyed - then can continue to get our electricity below cost, kindly subsidised by the SA taxpayer.

If the masses understood that, last year's xenophobia would look like a walk in the park.

And we wonder why Fred Bridgland (not JM Coetzee as I first wrote) calls us a failed state. This and Telkom has made for a bad week.

Please no... Electricity is insanely expensive already :/ Especially Pay as You go...

Nersa said the 31.3% percent increase included the 2 cents/kWh levy on the sale of electricity generated from non-renewable sources (environmental levy).

WTF should WE pay because THEY don't want to invest in renewable energy?

Speechless
Turn off geyser in the day
YOU CAN SAVE A LOT OF MONEY THAT WAY
TRY IT

Not convinced. I've seen studies that show the saving is negligible, considering that you need much more energy to again heat the geyser to temperature as opposed to maintaining a constant...

I agree.
If I had the money, I'd install a solar panel to keep the geyser heated during the day and to charge batteries for use at night when I'm home.

I save around R70 a month from having put a timer in to turn the geyser on/off on a schedule... that could be negligible in some peoples books, but I'm now saving a little short of R900 a year (which pays for a decent dinner out).

As to the needing much more energy to heat it from cold, I'd sure like to see some evidence of that... heat loss drops as the water temperature approaches ambient, the theory is that not maintaining the geyser at it's maximum prevents the higher heat loss associated with the higher temperature.

reheating needs only as much energy as the water has lost (all other things being equal that is)

You must be kidding... high efficiency solar panels only put out around 240w at peak, iirc it's around R4 to R6k a panel, so it's only going to cost you at least R40k to keep that water hot in the day and three times that (if not more) for night time as well...

It'll take you decades to recover that cost!

You might be talking about a solar geyser, they will save you money and you'll recoup the cost a lot quicker.

EDIT : found some actual pricing for a single unit... http://www.google.com/products?q=hi...roduct_result_group&ct=title&resnum=862951297

@damian24 ... did not know that... When I do have enough money eventually, I'd make sure I research the topic first.

Next year it will go up again by a similar amount. They say this is the most they can get away with for now.

@apogeeza somewhere along the line I had the same thinking as you and thought I could get off of eskom, until I learnt about how much cash it takes.

Eskom is the devil, but they're a neccessary one right now (just like Telkom)
