31.3% Eskom price increase

It's a pity the world has such issues getting their hands on energy. (It costs money.. etc..etc..) For example the amount of energy it takes to heat the earth by the sun is probably more per day than what man kind produces in one year or maybe decades...
 
The big problem is that Eskom does not have competition. They know the public can not boycot them because solar power is still expensive, Why did they give electrical power to the poor and then taking it back by hiking the prices so much that the poor cant afford it. I got a quote today to convert my house to solar power and a solar geyser R82652.00 but the catch is they will not install it unless it is connected to Eskom's grid so all the power I dont use will go to Eskom so even then I cant boycot them. So I am going to convert the appliances that use the most power and only leave the houses lights on the grid. My whole house has led lighting and I'll only pay Eskom R4.44 a month

The amount of electricity exported is negligible compared to the total power used in SA. Furthermore SA is a net importer of electricity.
 
All these increases and where are we suppose to get the money from?

No increases given at our company this year so we need to start digging into savings to try and cope :(

Things just don't seem to be getting better at the moment.
 
This actually comes as no surprise to me, come on figure it out....the elections are now past "they" got the votes they wanted.....
 
I am keen to see what type of bonuses get paid out to Eskom management.

Can you image million rand bonuses again at our expense?

I wonder what would happen if something like that actually happened?

By installing a timer & geyser blanket on our 200L geyser we saw a 30% reduction in our monthly electricity bill. I have the figures here in a spreadsheet :D There's also no reason to have a geyser set above 55°C in SA. Plumbers will often crank them up to full chat (80°C!) Cheers.

FAMILY OF 4 AND GEYSER SET AT 60 DEGREES
PLENT HOT WATER AND I DONT EVEN HAVE A GEYSER BLANKET
SAVE ABOUT 40 % ON ELECTRIC BILL
ALSO FITTED ENERGY SAVER LAMPS
 
We buy electricity at 65c/KWh from our local municipality. That means the municipality charges 23c/KWh premium on top of ESKOM's current 42c/KWh.

Now if ESKOM's price goes up by 31.3%, that means we will pay 78c/KWh, provided that the municipality doesn't hike its premium as well. Our household uses about 560KWh a month, so our bill goes up from R364 to R437.

Not much for average middle class, but a lot for a poor family. I'm shocked that ESKOM reckons a family of 3 only uses 400-420KWh a month. We are 2 and conserve electricity where we can and we go through 560KWh a month, as stated.
 
Well, that's why I wanted automated meter readings and the removal of the municipality from the electricity delivery system.

The municipalities are ripping us off something horrible in every way at every opportunity, we need to get rid of them.

The 23c premium they charge can be kinda justified if you consider they have to manually take readings etc etc. But I have a pre-paid meter. I paid for its installation and everything. Surely they can discount me that 23c?
 
It's not a 23c premium, it's a 23c per KW/h premium, as you said.

That's R128.80 on your 560 KW/h.
For what exactly?
For an accounting system and useless meter reading strategies.

The municipality also gets a discount on the Eskom rates because it is a bulk buyer, so the 23c margin is probably more like 35c-45c a KW/h.

I say : Kick the municipality our of service delivery areas where it does not belong.
 
If they push up the prices, then surely those that are used to paying R300 a month will keep on using R300 by using less electricity. Their ideas are flawed. :(
 
hey someone has to pay them, the new house/car etc.

i also switch my geyser off after 22h00 to 17h00 next day. i have done this for more than a month and have not seen much if at all a drop in electricity usage
 
i have a 5 plate gas stove at home. I use at least 2 plates a night and more on on the weekends to cook for 3 adults and 2 children. I use a 48KG gas bottle that costs me R350 to fill up ( its more now ). Im on my second bottle. This is my 4th year with this stove.... Do the math. you cant get it cheaper than that.

ditto on the stove plates, two adults mostly every night cooking, one big bottle just about a year now and it's halfway.

I think the poster meant solar water heating ( a huge radiator on your roof that gets heater up by the sunlight and then in turn heating the water. No electricity involved ( apart form the water pump ).

Most geysers harldly ever switch on during the day casue of our nice and temprerate climates. The roof is enough insulaiton to keep the water warm.
Its only in winter months where this becomes an issue.

Im installing a gas fed heat on demand geyster next month..........
 
I see the minister of communications reckons they need to introduce more competition in the fixed line telekoms arena to bring prices down. How do you figure that guvument forgets to maybe introduce competition in the electricity arena? 31% Increase is hude considering a 27% last year and probably a 30 odd percent next year. We got a 7% increase this year and that barely helps make back the losses of a 5% Repo rate increase for the last 18 months and food inflation.

I switch my geyser on at 05:00 and off at about 06:30 in summer and that allows 2 adults to shower in the morning and to bath my child that evening. In winter I leave it on longer. ANother tip - "Save Water, Shower together"
