I recently purchased a Toshiba L500-1UU laptop preloaded with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. After about 2 weeks or so I was forced to perform a recovery but I used the 32bit Recovery Discs as they were the only discs included in the packaging. I managed to get everything working again but now I need to upgrade it from 32bit to 64 bit.

Is there a way to do it without completely reloading the the OS? I would dearly love to keep all my programs and drivers intact as it took long enough to get it right? I tried using a 64bit Home Premium disc but the upgrade option doesn't work. Says its an incompatible version of Windows or Something to that effect...

I may be wrong but I don't think its possible to just do an upgrade from 32x to 64x bit.

To upgrade from 32bit to 64bit changes the whole architecture of the operating system. Therefore it speaks for itself that you cant upgrade to 64 bit. You need a fresh install.

The answer is a bit fat No..

Backup your stuff... and start from scratch.

Unless you have special need for it why even bother changing it back?
Personally i find the greatness of 64bit over 32bit to be mostly blow anyway.
Looking at apps loaded in my Program Files (x86) versus whats loaded into the 64bit Program Files kind of says the same thing.

NO NO No No No.... not that I know anything about it, but everyone else seems pretty sure of their answers

You cannot upgrade from 32-bit Windows 7 to 64-bit Windows 7. You need to perform a clean install.

can you try get the 64 recovery disk form where you bought it ?

If you did not format the small recovery partition on the HDD and it was not overwritten by the 32bit version you should be able to restore from that partition or alternatively create a 64bit install DVD.

why go to 64 bit anyway? all you games and apps are still 32 bit. Unless your planning on using more than 4gb of memory?
