Does 384 and 512 ADSL lines have latency difference ?

my 384 seems to be stuck at 390ms ping for international gaming, even using the unshaped account  with the same account, my friends on 512 and 1m all seems to get much lower latency.

Any suggestion will be appreciated :p

Hi Undertaker

In our tests the difference was negligible, as long as it is from the same line as Arf9999 suggested.

Thanks for the quick reply :)

the ADSL was on different line, but my line have better SNR Margin and Line Attenuation (from the router info), is that the only factor that can cause latency or is there something else ?

Apart from having to ask telkom to upgrade/downgrade the line every time you wanted to run at a different speed, how would one go about getting 3 different line speeds on the same line?

lol, good point!

However, using Occam's razor, the simplest solution is usually the correct one. I would expect that the latency is more network related than account type related. So I would look at the network differences between the three accounts. It may be DSLAM or backbone related - maybe some problem at Undertaker'sr exchange?

@Undertaker: Have you done a traceroute to determine where the latency is occuring on the three accounts/ lines. By comparing them you may be able to get Telkom to check out your results, especially if your account is "unshaped".

arf9999

I have done the traceroute before, and it seems as soon to the point from telkom to US and in all US ip route my ping drops around high 3xx ms and sometimes went to 4xx and 5xx, where my friends lines stay below 300 ms.

but, will telkom react to latency problem like this

Can you get your friends to do a traceroute at the same time as you for comparison? That way you have some ammunition. Are you sure that the account is in fact unshaped? Shaping will effect that exact hop AFAIK (telkom to US).

I am very sure the account is unshaped, with normal saix account I will normally get 500ms + ping on the same server.

We did do traceroute at the same time and that's the result we get, I get about extra 80ms or so latency

Give me the ip adress and I'll tracert on a SAIX shaped a/c on DSL384 for comparison if you like...

Edited to add : 192k connection.

I know it says 384/512...but here's my 192k ( shaped ) for comparison too:

Btw : the bandwidth of your connection, assuming it's all open, should not at all change the response times of the pings.

Another important question : How close are you to your friends, geographically speaking?

Thanks guys :)

Xarog, 1 is abt 5km another 1 is abt 10km away from me, so we in same town, but different suburb and exchange.

I am basically getting worse ping than Polygon with an SAOL UNSHAPED ACCOUNT, or is it SAOL account's problem (I assume all SAIX reseller account gives the same result), my SHAPPED account gives me a ping of 500ms+ once goes to international.

From the feedback of Polygon and Xarog, my ADSL looks awful ><

That's the traceroute I did just now, it's actually the best score I've ever had over my SHAPED account
