Does anyone know a decent supplier in South Africa for 3D printers? Hopefully something reliable and cheap to maintain?

This tech is amazing I can't wait for the day that it becomes cheaper... Personal use 3D printer ;)

What do they go for roughly?

Just like 2D Printers, the "ink" is what's expensive....well, thats iirc.
The big ones are pretty damn expensive by themselves though.

If you are looking for a decent low cost unit, and don't mind assembling it yourself... try out the RapMan. We have one and it works well enough. There are better, but they cost $$$ more.

We've had good results, and the unit is easy enough to modify (by heating the lower plate you can reduce warping on larger parts if you aren't using ABS etc), and we've built some interesting parts with one.

EDIT: Disclaimer - I haven't tried any others (except I've seen a expensive objet in operation a few years ago), so i'm not one to make comparisons.

Industrial machines the materials are vert expensive, up to R5000 a kg. For the smaller entry level machines we now have 3mm and 1.75mm ABS and PLA filament available for just R400kg and we do have stock.

Printers start at around R11 000 but we are about to start bringing in some kits hopefully for less than R6000.

Oh, and we are a proper established company. We represent 3DSystems, the largest manufacturer of 3D Printers in the world. All our printers are guaranteed and we have the backup service you would expect

We are now bringing in the Cube 3DPrinter from 3DSystems

Not sure why you think the "ink" = fillament is expensive? It is actually the machine that is expensive and the fillament ridiculously cheap. R300 or around there for 1Kg of the material. So making a print works in mass, and a fairly big object can then work out to R20 or so (if you work smart) - if you don't work smart chances are the print will fail in any case.

But this is not personal experience but just from people around me that has experienced this so maybe I am wrong?

ok, it's a year later...how does the 3d printer prices look now?
We're starting to see models aimed at home users starting from $250. The real problem with 3D printers is the models. Making your own 3D models is not that easy. However more 3D scanners are appearing. Ultimately you'd want a scanner and a printer.

I think the Da Vinci printers might be the only consumer ones that take proprietary cartridges.
