Hi

I've just moved from my cozy 4mb dsl line to a farm that isnt covered for ADSL. I currently am running off a wireless connection the farm has setup. but the ping is eratic and ofcourse 20 other ppl use the line so that screws with my in-game ping.

I'm very eager to get back into raiding. I have read a bit on people playing with the 3g and Hsdpa cards with 350-550ms and I'm wondering what my best options are. I also have read vodacoms bandwidth or solutions are alot worse than that of mtn. although I have spoke to someone who is happily raiding on his vodafone live account.

Also, what kind of costs am I looking at? Modem cost? Bandwidth Cost? etc

I am struggling to find the Mtn retail price for the F@stlink modems, and the bandwidth doesnt seem to be a problem for me to cover.

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

well, I happily play on vodacom hsdpa. i was lucky enough that my best mate gave me an e220 modem thingie to use. best in range price package is the mygig2 at R389 prepaid. they can f*** right off with their contract tie-in bs. I raid togc25 no problems and I tank quite a bit, so happy with the connection. i get about 450-550ms in raid, but sometimes well over that, and I dont dc anymore. i did have to phone vodacom and get the modem unrestricted which took a few days, but it was worth it. i have the firmware installed, but dont use it, use a little program called mdma (look under the vodacon thread on this site for a link where to get this) made by some dude in cape town, and connection speeds are better by a little. mind, all the reg hacks n leatrix fixes etc have also been done.

however, and this is the BIG thing. I live in the burbs, where there are lots of cell towers. as for u on a farm, there may well only be one or 2 for miles. in which case it wont make a difference what u do or how much u pay for wireless, its just gonna be cr*p for raiding. better phone whichever provider u want to go with before u buy anything to find out about signal strengths n whatnot.

ps afaik the modems cost aabout R1500 new, and less elsewhere. hope this was of some help

You're on a farm so more than likely won't have HSDPA and only *maybe* 3G. Otherwise Edge. I'd say try and test it before making a decision.

Thanks man, will give MTN and Vodacom a call and make sure there is actually a solution to my problem.

thanks alot for the help.

I'm not very clued up with this sort of thing. But if I am able to get 3g on my cellphone at home with no hassles would that be any indication of whether i could use it for a stable internet connection? and would the same principle apply to HSDPA?

I'm on HSDPA right now, through Internet Connection Sharing too. Check out my ping, it's at 122ms:. I don't know, but I think I'm pretty lucky!

i used 3g for wow for a while. Never ever EVER again. Its farking expensive not too mention unstable as hell. Love my adsl!

Maybe you can buy an e220 from telkom if they are network unlocked. They are selling them for R500 odd rand.

Good news.
Yes, if your phone does pick up a 3G signal, there is a strong possibility that your modem will pick up 3G and possibly HSDPA as well.

Bad news.
Picking up a signal doesnt mean jack**** for the acual usability.

Consolation prize:
I've played WoW on EDGE, through a tunneling service such as GamePath, LowerPing, etc.
Works just fine.
I Play on US servers, and with tunneling, EDGE does not deprive me of any performance in WoW.

250-450ms Tunneled on HSDPA
250-450ms Tunneled on EDGE

Sorry to say though, but the following also holds true
450-900ms normal on HSDPA
1200-2500ms normal on EDGE

If you havent connected the dots yet, what im saying is:
GET A TUNNELING SERVICE.

all vodafone modems is unlocked, they may not lock it anyway, because they do not make the modems.

i use the e272 vodafone modem with mtn sim card, get about 350ms 25 man raiding sometimes that random dc because im far from the tower.

mtn is way better vodafone you juts dc as the fight start because, there like 100 people hogging the same tower and you get like no bandwidth :(

i beg to disagree. other than the random dc which all of us lucky south africans experience from time to time, I have no problems in the start or during any of the fights. as i did say tho, could be cos theres lots of cell towers in the vicinity. price is a bit painful, but its a damn sight faster and less hassle than hellkom. fyi i have raided at 1.6k latency without being dc'd.

and honestly, I would rather go without internet than use mtn

yeah same ,i had the problem with vodacom i personally new a few guys near me used vodacom that raided aswell, i was fine back in burning crusade but in wrath it just got worse, so i switched and worked for me.

yeah im cba to get a line etc. where i can use this any place at a lan to play wow :P

I used my phone last night and setup a connection. Could only connect at 941 kbps which i wasnt upset with. although I thought I would get the 1.8Mbps of hsdpa. Maybe I need to upgrade my firmware for my phone.

I do use gamepath and was running smoothly healing a 5man dungeon for an hour or so. Then when I tried running ULD25 on my rogue i disconnected at every fight. Future looks bleak for me raiding at the 25 man level.

My pings didnt move from 650-700ms when logged in through gamepath. Otherwise pings were terrible.

Also I am on MTN, any one know how I can buy data with my airtime like on the vodafone live system. Its running R2 a mb atm.

Will give toc10 a shot tonyt and see how it goes.

Im on vodacom HSDPA with my samsung phone, and dont experience poor connectivity nor dc's in raids. But i think it depends greatly on your location. :)

Something VERY important regarding gamepath:

Make sure you select a server dedicated and recommended for your battlegroup and server.
Makes a HUGE difference.
There is usually ~3 servers per battlegroup.
Test each 3 separately, it does make a difference.

Other than that, if youre still struggling really hard with especially 25mans disconnecting you, first check your settings.
Drop all settings to its minimal values and try again.
Just try.
If it sovles your problem, then its not your connection's fault.

Sadly it does look from here that it is your connection causing the problems, as those pings are pretty high for 3G+ with gamepath. Most likely the signal is too weak or instable to maintain a decent connection.

Also, try get hold of a separate modem instead of using your phone.
The modems generally perform better as they have a dedicated task instead of sharing a task with the rest of the phone's functions.

raided uld 25 hardmodes successfully with 1 dc due to running out of my 10mb test cap :P
Im looking to get a modem, come on xmas bonus :P. But registering another sim card atm, wat a mission. I have tried quite a few of the Gamepath server. I went from UK > France > Netherlands. and Netherlands have offered me the best path for now. I am gna be raiding on a different one until i find the best one. and then stick to it.

My guild leader recommended switching off vista firewall. and presto no more dc's. I raided comfortably with around 10 spikes in the 3 hour raid.

Thanks to all for your help and info.
