I did a quick search, but couldn't find anything pertinent.

I have terrible 3G reception. Tried a high-gain booster from Poynting, but it didn't make a big difference. Walking around the house does make a big difference. I'm taking it back today and going to try a different modem rather (still using an E160/k3565).

Simple question really, which 3G modem/router with better antenna capability plus a connector for an external antenna would you recommend? Mobility is not an issue, this is for a static (study) setup.

Thanks!

You say high-gain booster, but you don't say what RSSI you have with and without booster. If you have at least 95dBm without booster, maybe your choise was wrong. In such conditions highly directional antenna works better, as it eliminate multiple signal and improves signal to noise ratio and you can chose tower of your preference by pointing the antenna.
Regarding modem, I wouldn't look for anything better unless your reception improves.

I'm getting around -89db in my study. The best I can get is -79db in one of the upstairs rooms - fairly far from the study though.

The window attached high gain antenna didn't have any effect - and it was roughly pointed towards the nearest vodacom tower.

You've just got to get it pointed the right way ..... you should be seeing some noticeable change between booster plugged onto modem or not plugged onto modem.....i previously got a 20dBm improvement when i was using the type i linked to.
MDMA will give you all you need to see
