Is it possible?

Cos if i wanna use mxit, i have to turn off 3G and set the network to GSM Only... otherwise my connection cuts out all the time when im on mxit

Im on Vodacom Prepaid
but on other peoples phones such as my m8 whos on MTN, he can keep 3G on..

and also this dude that on Vodacom contract can also keep it on and Mxit works fine..

Any info on this?

MXiT is a program at the Application layer and as such does not know (or care) what you're using at the Data Link layer, so it will work equally well (or not) on 2G or 3G.

We've noticed the MXiT client is very sensitive to disruptions (should be more robust for a mobile environment) and one such 'disruption' could be caused by your phone swcitching between 3G and 2G.

Check if your handset is not hunting between 2G and 3G.

no i dont care about connection speed or whatever on mxit..

its just that because i use mxit frequently, i keep my phone set to GSM Only, cos its a hassle to keep changing back and forth from3G to GSM only everytime i wanna use mxit...not to mention you have to restart your phone everytime you want to do that..

and the prob with GSM Only is that you cant make use of 3G services such as video call and high speed internet..

i might as well have had a 2G phone instead of my current Nokia N80..

its judt irritating and i was wondering if i can get it to work while my phones network mode is set to 3G, because i've seen other peoples phones (on vodacom) set to 3G and they do not experiience these connection drops while on Mxit..

thx

Are you using a [searchforum]PPDB[/searchforum], or just pre-paid credit? - is your PPDB or pre-paid credit balance normally kept low and do you normally manually disconnect and reconnect a lot when using 3G?

no, i am using pre-paid credit..

as in i buy vouchers and top up...ive had this sim card for about 7 or 8 years now.

i never use 3G because i always use Mxit.. so i just keep my phone set to GSM Only

thx for the help

Ok but you must have tried to use MXit over 3G at some point in time otherwise the reason for this thread does not make any sense.

As in near zero?

i use mxit on 3G on a n73, lot more stable for me then GSM, on 3G i never get disconnect or have to reconnect... this is on Voda, contract, though my friend on prepaid has the same issue as you, and we sit next to each other at his house, both with n73's, every 5 minutes his drops connection mine doesn't... so who knows... maybe a new conspiracy :P

Does your friend keep his pre-paid or PPDB balance near R0.00?

yeah thats the prob i have..

i keep my balance full all the time..

last time i tried to use 3G ( a few days ago) to check if i still had the problem, i still experienced disconnects as usual.

i guess that only the prepaid voda users get the prob?

edit: misread

its not to do with balances..lots of people have this prob...all the people i know that have this problem are on pre-paid and all had sufficient credit

I think I might know what the problem is. (Disconnect on bearer switch for pre-paid only)

chernics reported it here quite a while ago, we found the problem and a fix was developed. But it seems it might not be in yet. (I was under the impression it went in a long time ago) Let me check.

When on a data session, and your phone switch between 2G and 3G, or vice versa, you get disconnected and must reconnect again. Only affecting pre-paid,

i.e. "Disconnect on bearer switch for pre-paid only" :)

(But I agree, it was a tad cryptic :))
That's what I thought you meant, but my cryptic reply was more an expression of surprise that such a potentially serious problem still exists.

I don't think it's a network-wide problem, we've had very few reports. As a matter of fact, we only picked it up here on the forum. But the guys did manage to replicate it.
