3G-to-3G RDP Problem

Yes I did get feedback, someone called. But the person that called said he would propagate the message to the right people/person. And that person called on WEDNESDAY. My previous message said that I haven't received feedback yesterday (THURSDAY) nor today (FRIDAY). So I don't feel it is just for you to post such comments as: "I think you're not quite telling the truth here, not sure why". Perhaps you should read my posts more carefully.

What do you mean that he told me what your plans are. What are your plans? You said you have logged an emergency job order. No more details were given to me than that. Nobody has called to say, hey we found the problem and hey its going to take so long to fix. If it is an emergency then why has nothing been resolved (problem was logged on Wednesday)?

If you can get someone to call me with feedback each day, I would appreciate it. Every hour is not necessary, but once or twice a day would be good service.

You logged the problem, we can replicate the problem, we are working on implementing a fix, we will update as soon as resolved, we gave you a possible workaround.

So, saying you did not get feedback is not quite true. Not sure what other feedback you require?

But I'll post this message here twice a day till it's resolved:

"@gavgapi: Just to let you know, we are still working on the inter-apn routing problem. We will advise as soon as it is resolved. Please test unrestricted to unrestricted apn usage for your application."

Hi. As mentioned in a previous post. I have tried unrestricted -> unrestricted, as well as internetvpn -> unrestricted, as well as internet -> unrestricted. Neither of these work. This is not new news, I mentioned all of this when I spoke to your technician over the phone. It was also mentioned in one of the previous posts.

The requesting APN should not affect the RDP session, only the destination APN is sensitive and needs to be "unrestricted" so as to open port 3389. The requesting APN should be able to be internet, internetvpn or unrestricted - this is not a factor in getting RDP to work.

What is really strange is that I can RDP from my 3G connection (using internet APN) to other clients machines that don't have 3G connections, but I cant go 3G to 3G. Also, If the client has a 3G connection, I can successfully login to their machine with say an ADSL connection, but not a 3G connection. So the problem is purely when going from a 3G machine (APN insensitive) to another 3G machine (assuming unrestricted APN).

It might still work with the internet apn but I wouldn't be surprised if some apps require a non-NATed ip to function, wasn't this the reason the internetvpn was implemented in the first place anyway?

Our test shows it works with unrestricted to unrestricted. Can you please re-test?

Hi. Have tested using the "unrestricted" APN and it is working. Thank you.

I will send the HSDPA card details as soon as possible.

Do you know what was causing the problem?

We're the victims of our own security. The way the systems have been designed it should not be possible to do inter-apn routing.

However, I broke this rule by asking for the unrestricted apn, which opens up incoming ports. So the guys battle to keep internet/internetvpn->unrestricted routing open. At every change, it closes itself!

They're busy reworking the architecture to put a permanent solution in place.

Unrestricted->unrestricted is easier, but still a bitch between regions. But this was done on Friday to give you an interim solution.

Thank you. I appreciate the technical explanation and potentially make-shift solution. I have clients that depend on this working to perform their daily jobs. I presumed it was a port blocking / firewall issue, but then again the system(s) you work with are far more complex than the routers and servers we work with.

It is working. I can connect from Pta to Jhb server, and the site in Worcestor can connect to Jhb as well. This is assuming both sides (request and responding) are activated for the "unrestricted" APN.

Thank you Vodacom for attending to this urgently.

Cool, glad it's sorted.

It's an IP network, so the concepts are exactly the same. However, the scale of the animal is just scary and this makes it so much more difficult to work on. And it needs to be up 100%, so the analogy of changing rings on your car, while the engine is running, is quite apt.

Will let you know as soon as 'normal' routing is restored.

Sorry I haven't been around here lately. I can report that my prepaid sim at home is connecting but not keeping a stable connection so when it is connected though, I can connect HSDPA or ADSL to the Unrestricted Prepaid sim at home. Works like a charm.

Same problem here ploempie when i can connect to it works like a charm , but if not just keeps giving me time out errors. Also on a prepaid sim.

I'm using direct update on my server at home which pings every five minutes. If it doesnt get a reply, it drops the connection, redials and updates the dyndns. Works well.
