I bought a normal prepaid sim on roaming and then made the sim non roaming.I then used the same sim to apply for the 3gig promo for R149.
I had to get a new sim for the i5 10gig promo tho.

I did the same, but the option for the 2+1 or 3 GB Promo is not available on 8ta's cellphone menu, only the normal data bundles are available to purchase.
I just went ahead and bought the 3 GB promo with the bundled sim and on that sim I now can select the 3 GB Promo option when I have to purchase more data later on.
DrYes did u do the same as JohannesPaulsen ? Please excuse my ignorance, if the menu is not available on the same - how do u purchase the bundle ?

8ta's data promos can only be accessed on their 8ta network. 8ta's prepaid sims on the other hand work primarily off MTN's network. To help customers to test the 8ta network, provision has been made for prepaid sims (on request) to be able to connect to 8ta's network and also still connect to MTN's network. Setting your dongle on manual network search, you can now select either 8ta (SA02/65502 UMTS) or MTN UMTS. You must obviously first buy some airtime to convert to data to surf the internet. When you purchase date with your airtime only the standard rates data bundles are shown in the cellphone menu. The promos will only show on sim cards that are specific to the 8ta network only, meaning that they will not be able to connect to the MTM network as well. I think it is possible, like DrYes, to get your prepaid sim to be converted to the 8ta network only (no MTN roaming anymore). In that case you should will be able to purchase the data promos (3GB) on that sim card as well. DrYes can inform us more about this. Remember, non roaming prepaid sims are meant to test the 8ta network and nothing more. Read more here.

Test your area for 8ta network with a non roaming sim card and if happy go and buy the 10GB x 24 month contract or 3GB prepaid (I have both for my two sons) with the relevant bundled sim cards.
I hope this helps.
Thx def helps - my 8ta pre paid sim is now officially non roaming - does this mean that i hve to buy anota sim for the 3gb Promo - if i understand Dr i don't think i hve to
i hve checked 8ta bundles on sim, not available to purchase the promo bundles
any advise - thx guys
Confusing, isn't? Possibly not true. I have 'any' prepaid SIM, it had been made non-roaming. I don't have access to MTN network anymore (not only MTN UMTS), but I can purchase 3G promo. So maybe clue is that you need to be cut from MTN completely, not only for UMTS.Getting a new 3GB sim is going to be easier than to get 8ta to convert your 'non roaming' prepaid sim to acccept the 3Gb bundle. 'Non roaming' 8ta prepaid sims actually is not quite the right term as these sims can still connect to the MTN UMTS networks manually. The 8ta UMTS network has only been enabled on them for testing purposes.
Remember, any 8ta sim (roaming or 'non roaming') that can access the MTN UMTS network will not accept any of the 8ta data promos. The reason for this has already been explained in some of the 8ta threads.

I bought a normal sim, first I requested no roaming then waited a day, called again and asked my sim to be converted for the promo, had to wait another day.. then I had the option and 8ta were helpful.
